ext-ms-win-uxtheme-themes-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Windows API-set contract, but it is not usually a normal DLL that you should download and copy into a folder. If an application reports that it is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the affected application instead of replacing the filename manually.
What this filename actually means
The ext-...-l1-1-0 naming pattern identifies a Windows API-set contract. API sets are virtual names that the Windows loader resolves through its API-set schema. The name shown in an error message therefore does not guarantee that a file with that exact name should exist in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the application directory.
Historically, Windows 8.1 API-set data mapped this contract to uxtheme.dll, the Windows component associated with visual styles and themes. The contract was marked discontinued in Windows 10, so a modern application that asks for it may be relying on an old API arrangement, an outdated compatibility layer, or incorrect application packaging.
This is why a DLL website’s offer of a matching file is not a reliable diagnosis. The real problem may be damaged Windows servicing data, a legacy application, or another dependency entirely.

Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the best first repair when the message appears during Windows startup or in more than one unrelated application. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.
- Install any pending Windows updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
-
Install available updates and restart if Windows requests it.
-
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
-
Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
-
Run this command:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
-
Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses for several minutes.

Run System File Checker:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and launch the affected program again.
A successful result usually says that SFC did not find integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If the error remains, the application may be too old or incorrectly packaged rather than missing a physical DLL.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious when Windows has several repair issues. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems involved and show what needs attention, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program is the source of the bad dependency.
If DISM says the source files cannot be found
Windows normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable, use a genuine repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the valid repair source. Do not use a random folder from another computer. After DISM completes, run:

If SFC still reports unrepaired files, review:

Persistent corruption may require Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one game or application reports the error, its installer, manifest, compatibility settings, or bundled dependencies are more suspicious than Windows itself.
First try the program’s built-in repair option:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data. For desktop software without these options:

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Uninstall the application from Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Install the correct version for your Windows architecture.
- Test the program before restoring optional mods, injectors, overlays, or reshade files.
Do not copy ext-ms-win-uxtheme-themes-l1-1-0.dll beside the program executable. An application that was built for an obsolete API-set arrangement needs a compatible update or a correctly packaged release, not a random alias file.

Avoid permanently selecting an old Windows mode unless it improves the result and you have confirmed that the application itself is legitimate.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and security history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a real application file or a Windows component, although the API-set name itself may only be a dependency reported by the loader.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Restore a file only if it is clearly associated with the affected application and verified as genuine.
- If the application was modified, cracked, or downloaded from an unofficial source, do not restore it.
- Reinstall a clean copy from the developer’s official source.
- Run a full scan.
Do not add broad exclusions for System32, SysWOW64, or an entire drive to make the error disappear.
Fix 4: Check the application’s architecture and runtimes
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit program can require 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. However, this filename alone does not tell you to download a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the complete error also names a file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package. Use x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 for a 64-bit application. Older Visual C++ runtime generations can remain installed side by side, so the latest package does not universally replace every older dependency.
If the error includes “not designed to run on Windows” or status 0xc000007b, investigate architecture mismatch, damaged application files, and other dependencies. The API-set filename by itself does not identify the cause.
Fix 5: Use Windows Features only when the application requires them
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Do not enable random Windows Features because an API-set name appears in an error. Check them only when the application’s documentation or complete error identifies a required component such as .NET Framework or legacy components.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the listed Windows Features.
- Enable only the component the application specifically requires.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Enabling or disabling a feature will not recreate an API-set contract or turn it into a conventional downloadable DLL.

Fix 6: Update a driver only when the evidence points to one
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Drivers are not a leading cause of this filename. Consider a driver only if the error appears inside a graphics, chipset, capture, or other hardware utility, or if Event Viewer reports a related device failure.

regsvr32 registers ordinary self-registering DLLs that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-uxtheme-themes-l1-1-0.dll
An API-set contract is resolved by the Windows loader and is not normally registered like a COM component. An entry-point or registration error from regsvr32 would be expected and would not repair the underlying problem.
Do not download or copy this DLL
Avoid DLL download sites and files offered through pop-up repair tools. A downloaded file may contain malware, target the wrong Windows architecture, have the wrong compatibility level, or fail because the real issue is the API-set schema or the application manifest.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The game or application folder
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, and the application developer’s official installer instead. There is no authoritative Microsoft standalone download page for this API-set contract.
Likely causes
| Situation | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Several programs or Windows startup report it | Run DISM, then SFC; check security history |
| Only one old application reports it | Repair, update, or reinstall that application |
| The issue began after an antivirus detection | Review quarantine and reinstall from an official source |
| The application reports Visual C++ files too | Install the matching Microsoft runtime architecture |
| The error began after a Windows update or cleanup | Retry servicing, then consider System Restore |
| A hardware utility reports it with device errors | Inspect Device Manager and the vendor driver |
| The computer still runs Windows 8.1 | Plan an upgrade; Windows 8.1 is no longer supported |
If the problem began after a clear update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software change, back up important files and consider System Restore. If normal servicing cannot repair Windows, use an in-place repair installation or another supported recovery option rather than replacing protected files manually.
