To limit who can see your Facebook posts and profile, open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Review post audiences, profile and contact details, friend-list visibility, discoverability, tagging, and public-content settings. These controls cover different content and surfaces; changing one does not make your whole profile private. Menu labels and available options can vary by app version, region, and profile type.
Who can see your Facebook posts?
Facebook lets you choose an audience for a post before you share it, and you can set a default audience in the Posts settings. Use the audience selector on sensitive posts rather than assuming all past posts use the same setting. The available audience choices can include Public, Friends, selected people, or Only me, depending on the content and interface. Facebook’s privacy settings guide identifies Posts as a privacy category, and its post audience guidance explains selecting an audience before sharing.
Review posts you have already shared
A default for future posts does not automatically change the audience on everything you posted earlier. Open Activity Log and, where available, use Manage Activity to review or manage some existing posts, photos, and videos. A post hidden from your timeline may still be visible elsewhere on Facebook to the audience it was originally shared with.
How do you hide your Facebook friends list?
Go to Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you > Who can see your friends list? Facebook’s help guidance says the Friends section is public by default. Choose a narrower audience if you do not want everyone viewing the friends list on your profile. This setting cannot change what a friend chooses to show on their own profile, and mutual friends may still appear. Facebook’s friends-list guidance describes these limits.

Who can see your profile details and contact information?
Review basic information and each contact field individually. Facebook allows you to edit the audience for basic profile information and use audience selectors for contact details; there is not one profile-wide switch that guarantees every field is hidden. Check items such as your email address and phone number, and set each to the audience you intend. See Facebook’s profile-information guidance.
How can you make your profile harder to find?
Under Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you, review who can send you friend requests, whether Facebook may suggest your profile based on your email address or phone number, and whether external search engines may link to your profile. These settings affect different routes to your profile: Facebook discovery and links from outside Facebook.

Turning off external search-engine linking does not immediately remove results that a search engine has already indexed or cached. Search services control when their own results and caches update. Facebook’s guidance on search engines linking to your profile covers the Facebook-side setting.
What does the tagged-post audience setting change?
In Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging, look for the setting that asks who to add to the audience of a post when you are tagged and they cannot already see it. Facebook lists options such as Friends, selected friends, or adding no one; its help page says Friends is the default. This controls whether you add viewers to the audience. It does not replace or broaden the original poster’s audience choice. Facebook’s tagging-audience guidance explains the distinction.

How do you limit followers and public interactions?
Review Followers and public content under Audience and visibility. Facebook identifies profile photos and videos, cover photos, featured photos, and updates to basic information as public profile information. The Followers and public content settings also let you adjust who can like or comment on public profile information. These controls concern public interactions and content; they are separate from the audience selector on an ordinary post. See Facebook’s guidance on public profile information and followers.
Which profile photos remain public?
Facebook states: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” Restricting other profile fields does not make those current images private. Older profile and cover photos may have separate privacy controls, so inspect those images individually. Facebook’s profile-picture and cover-photo guidance explains their visibility.

How do you see your Facebook profile as the public?
Use View As, where available, to inspect your profile from the perspective of someone who is not your friend. Check visible profile details, posts, and images. View As is a preview of your profile, not a guarantee that content hidden from the timeline is absent from every other Facebook surface. A post or photo can still appear elsewhere to the audience it was originally shared with. See Facebook’s View As guidance.
How should you finish the privacy review?
- Open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. If the labels differ, look for the closest matching privacy category in your current interface.
- Set a default audience for future posts, then check the audience selector each time you share something sensitive.
- Use Activity Log and Manage Activity, where available, to inspect older material separately.
- Review the Friends section, basic information, contact details, findability, tagging, followers, and public-content controls.
- Use View As, where available, to check what a non-friend can see on your profile.
- Run Facebook Privacy Checkup as a guided review of audiences and sharing choices.
Privacy Checkup is a review tool, not a universal hide control: it does not make another person’s post private or guarantee every old item is covered. Facebook’s Privacy Checkup guidance describes it as a way to review privacy choices. Some defaults for people under 18 differ by region, and options can vary by profile type. If a setting is missing or named differently, use the closest matching category in the current interface.
