Spoiler warning: This guide reveals weapon locations and quest outcomes. There is no single strongest weapon for every Fallout 4 build: Big Boy excels at explosive burst, the Gauss Rifle is a high-damage charged rifle, and weapons such as Reba II are strongest against specific enemies. Here are selected base-game standouts, their acquisition routes, and the tradeoffs that matter.
Which Fallout 4 weapon is strongest?
It depends on what you mean by strongest. If you want a spectacular explosive hit, Big Boy is a clear standout. For a charged rifle shot, a Game8 guide ranks the Gauss Rifle as the best rifle based on its high damage when fully charged; that is a guide assessment, not a universal ranking across every build or weapon. Overseer’s Guardian offers a practical rifle alternative, while several other picks trade general damage for a useful bonus against a particular target.

Best weapons at a glance
| Weapon | Why choose it | Where to find it | Main tradeoff or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Boy | Fires two mini nukes per shot while using one unit of ammo, according to PC Gamer’s guide. | Buy from Arturo at his stall in Diamond City. | Mini nukes and the purchase both come at a cost. |
| Overseer’s Guardian | Its extra-projectile effect makes it a versatile rifle option. | Buy from Alexis in the Vault 81 Depot. | It is a strong practical option, not an objective best for every build. |
| Gauss Rifle | High damage when fully charged; a Game8 guide calls it the best rifle. | The sources cited here do not establish an exact standard-game location. | Its cited strength is a guide judgment, not a universal ranking. |
| Justice | Chance to stagger, useful for close-range control. | Buy from Penny at Covenant. | Its standout effect is stagger chance. |
| Le Fusil Terribles | Extra limb damage. | Find it in the captain’s quarters atop the sunken container ship at Libertalia. | High recoil makes handling a tradeoff. |
| Reba II | Extra damage to Mirelurks and bugs. | In the Rook family home in Salem, after helping Barney. | According to PC Gamer’s guide, getting it requires stealing the key or killing Barney. |
| Partystarter | Extra damage against human targets. | Buy from KL-E-0 in Goodneighbor. | Its special bonus is enemy-specific. |
| Cryolator | A freezing weapon found early in the game’s opening location. | In a sealed case in the Overseer’s office at Vault 111. | The case requires a master-level lock. |
| Old Faithful | Deals double damage to targets at full health. | Buy from Arturo in Diamond City. | Its bonus rewards an opening shot against an undamaged target. |
| Prototype UP77 “Limitless Potential” | Unlimited clip. | Explore University Point’s Student Union and bank-vault route. | The route includes a master-locked safe. |
| Survivor’s Special | Damage rises as your health falls. | Available through The Lost Patrol questline; Paladin Brandis at Recon Bunker Theta may give it, depending on the outcome. | Acquisition depends on the quest outcome, and its effect is tied to low health. |
| Alien Blaster | Exceptional damage. | After the UFO crash encounter, find the cave in the woods between Vault 81 and Oberland Station. | Its ammunition is scarce. |
Where to get the strongest explosive weapons
Big Boy: buy it in Diamond City
Visit Arturo’s stall in Diamond City to buy Big Boy. PC Gamer’s weapon guide says it fires two mini nukes for each unit of ammo consumed, giving it unusually dramatic burst potential. That output comes with practical costs: mini nukes are valuable ammunition, and the weapon itself must be purchased.

Partystarter: target human enemies
KL-E-0 sells Partystarter in Goodneighbor. Its extra damage applies against human targets, so it is a more specialized choice than a weapon whose appeal is broad use.
Where to get powerful rifles
Overseer’s Guardian: buy it from Alexis
Alexis sells Overseer’s Guardian in the Vault 81 Depot. The rifle’s extra-projectile effect makes it a flexible option for players looking for a strong, straightforward rifle route. The Vault 81 vendor location is supported by a Game8 search result; the Game8 pages were not available for detailed verification.

Gauss Rifle: high charged damage, location not established
A Game8 guide describes the Gauss Rifle as the best rifle because of its high damage when fully charged. The sources cited here do not establish a precise standard-game location, so this guide does not assign it one. Treat “best rifle” as that guide’s evaluation rather than a definitive result for every character setup.
Old Faithful: make the first shot count
Arturo in Diamond City also sells Old Faithful. Its effect doubles damage against targets at full health, which favors opening shots before an enemy has taken damage.

Where to find distinctive shotguns
Justice: buy it at Covenant
Penny sells Justice in Covenant. Its chance to stagger gives it a control-oriented edge at close range.
Le Fusil Terribles: search the captain’s quarters at Libertalia
Look in the captain’s quarters atop the sunken container ship at Libertalia. The weapon deals extra limb damage, but its high recoil can make it harder to handle.

Where to find weapons for specific enemies or situations
Reba II: help Barney in Salem
Reba II is in the Rook family home in Salem, after assisting Barney. PC Gamer’s guide says you must take the key by theft or kill him to obtain it. The rifle deals extra damage to Mirelurks and bugs, making it a situational pick rather than a universal answer.
Cryolator: return to Vault 111 with master lock access
The Cryolator is in a sealed case in the Overseer’s office at Vault 111. It is easy to encounter early, but opening the case requires a master-level lock, so discovery does not mean immediate access for an unlevelled lockpicker.

Prototype UP77: follow the University Point route
At University Point, explore the Student Union and the bank-vault route to reach Prototype UP77, also called “Limitless Potential.” Its unlimited clip is unusual, but acquiring it requires navigating the route and opening a master-locked safe.
Survivor’s Special: resolve The Lost Patrol
Survivor’s Special is tied to The Lost Patrol. Paladin Brandis at Recon Bunker Theta may give it depending on how the quest ends. Its damage increases as your health falls, so the effect favors a low-health situation.
Alien Blaster: follow the crash encounter
After the UFO crash encounter, search the cave in the woods between Vault 81 and Oberland Station. The Alien Blaster is described as exceptionally damaging, but ammunition is scarce, which limits how freely you can use it.
How to choose the right weapon
Start with your build and the fights you expect, rather than choosing by a single “best” label. These guides describe effects and locations; they do not provide a controlled test that proves one weapon deals the most damage in every situation.
- For explosive burst: Big Boy delivers two mini nukes per shot, but its ammunition and purchase are costly.
- For a versatile rifle route: Consider Overseer’s Guardian from the Vault 81 Depot.
- For charged shots: The Gauss Rifle is the guide-ranked high-damage rifle, but its precise location is not established here.
- For a target-specific advantage: Reba II favors fights against Mirelurks and bugs; Partystarter favors human targets; Old Faithful rewards a shot at a full-health enemy.
- For sustained fire: Prototype UP77’s unlimited clip is notable, though its master-locked acquisition route takes effort.
- For a control effect: Justice can stagger, while Le Fusil Terribles trades added limb damage for high recoil.
These are base-game selections. This list does not comprehensively verify Far Harbor or Nuka-World weapons, and weapon balance can depend on edition, platform, patch, perks, and build.
