Check the requirements for the specific Fallout game you plan to play: the series’ PC listings differ substantially, and a minimum spec is compatibility guidance—not a promise of a particular frame rate. Bethesda’s published requirements cover Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76; for older games and listings that name outdated Windows versions, confirm current storefront and operating-system support before buying or upgrading.

Fallout PC requirements at a glance

The figures below are the publishers’ listed requirements, not independent performance benchmarks. They do not specify a target resolution or FPS. Compare your PC’s CPU, graphics card and video memory, system RAM, free storage, and operating system with the exact game entry.

Game Minimum Recommended Important qualification
Fallout 3 Windows XP/Vista; Pentium 4-class 2.4 GHz CPU; 1 GB RAM on XP or 2 GB on Vista; 7 GB disk; DirectX 9.0c graphics with 256 MB, such as NVIDIA 6800 or ATI X850-class. Windows XP/Vista; Core 2 Duo; 2 GB RAM; 7 GB disk; DirectX 9.0c graphics with 512 MB, such as NVIDIA 8800 or ATI 3800-class. Bethesda’s Fallout 3 PC manual and Steam listing are legacy-era specifications. Steam says its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024; that does not establish that every older game or service works on a current system.
Fallout: New Vegas Windows 7/Vista/XP; dual-core 2 GHz CPU; 2 GB RAM; 10 GB storage; NVIDIA GeForce 6-series or ATI 1300XT-series graphics. Not stated by Bethesda’s requirements page. Bethesda’s requirements listing and Steam list these older specifications; neither establishes current OS compatibility or a frame-rate target.
Fallout 4 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz; 8 GB RAM; 30 GB free HDD space; GTX 550 Ti 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB. 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; Intel Core i7-4790 3.6 GHz or AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz; 8 GB RAM; 30 GB; GTX 780 3 GB or Radeon R9 290X 4 GB. Bethesda’s published requirements do not show an update or version date and still name Windows 7/8/10. Treat them as the stated requirements, not a guarantee of compatibility with a current Windows release.
Fallout 76 64-bit OS; Windows 7/8/10; Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5 GHz or Ryzen 3 1300X 3.5 GHz; GTX 780 3 GB or Radeon R9 285 2 GB; 8 GB RAM; 96 GB free disk space. 64-bit OS; Windows 7/8.1/10; Intel Core i7-4790 3.6 GHz or Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5 GHz; GTX 970 4 GB or Radeon R9 290X 4 GB; 8 GB RAM; 96 GB free disk space. Bethesda’s requirements page is unversioned and names older Windows editions. It also requires internet access and a free Bethesda.net account to install. Verify current storefront and OS compatibility.

How to judge whether your PC meets a listing

Compare the exact components

Check your processor model, graphics card model and VRAM, installed system memory, and available disk space—not just labels such as “gaming laptop” or “modern PC.” For Fallout 76 in particular, the published listing calls for 96 GB free storage, compared with Fallout 4’s 30 GB.

Read minimum and recommended as guidance, not an FPS estimate

A listed minimum is not a promise of smooth play at your preferred resolution or graphics quality. Recommended parts are not paired with a stated FPS, resolution, or test conditions in these listings. If one component falls below the listed tier, performance may be affected, but poor play can also come from settings, drivers, background software, or configuration.

Be cautious with older Windows labels

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas list operating systems from their original release era, and Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 support pages still name older Windows versions. Those labels alone do not confirm how a current install behaves. Check the active storefront’s compatibility information and current Windows support before purchasing or changing hardware. Steam notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024, but client support is not a guarantee for every legacy game or online feature.

What to check if Fallout 4 runs poorly

Bethesda’s first suggestions focus on reversible settings and basic system checks. Change one thing at a time, then see whether performance changes.

Fallout 4 Game of The Year Edition - PC
  • Freedom and Liberty! Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
  • Be whoever you want with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. character system. From a Power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of Perks and develop your own playstyle
  • New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of Fallout. From the blasted forests of the Commonwealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
  • Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
  1. Restore launcher-detected options: Open the Fallout 4 launcher, select Options, then choose Default. This resets video options to those automatically detected for the system.
  2. Reduce graphics demands: Lower or disable graphics settings, including resolution. Bethesda notes this may improve performance, but does not guarantee a fix.
  3. Close other software: Exit unnecessary background programs and check whether the game responds better.
  4. Update the graphics driver: Get driver updates using the graphics-card manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Check requirements and reset configuration if needed: Compare the PC with Bethesda’s listed requirements. If problems persist, Bethesda suggests deleting Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini, and Fallout4Prefs.ini to reset settings; back up files first if you may need to restore custom configuration.
  6. Try another display mode: In the launcher, switch to borderless or windowed mode and check whether that changes the issue.

These steps come from Bethesda Support’s Fallout 4 poor-performance guidance. The support page does not promise that any single change will resolve stutter or low FPS.

What to check if Fallout 76 has low FPS or lag

Start with requirements and drivers

Bethesda identifies memory, graphics hardware, and overall computer performance as possible factors. Compare the PC with the Fallout 76 requirements and update the graphics driver before making more involved changes.

Adjust the in-game display settings

  1. From the Main Menu, open Settings, then Display.
  2. Try Fullscreen mode.
  3. Lower the fade settings for Actor, Item, Object, and Grass. Bethesda identifies these as likely to give the best performance improvement with the least visual impact.
  4. If performance remains poor, reduce Texture, Water, Lighting, and Shadow quality.

Fallout 76 offers Low, Medium, High, Ultra, and Custom presets. Changing individual settings changes the preset label to Custom. Bethesda’s suggestions are in its low-FPS troubleshooting article; they are troubleshooting options, not a measured guarantee.

When an upgrade is actually warranted

Before buying hardware, separate a real component shortfall from a software or settings problem. Confirm the game’s current storefront and OS compatibility, compare each PC component with the chosen game’s published requirements, and try the applicable driver and settings steps. Consider an upgrade only when a specific component is below the relevant listed tier and simpler checks have not addressed the problem. The published specifications do not establish a universal part to buy or a frame-rate outcome for a given configuration.
