The evidence available for this topic supports one well-documented example, Pokémon Uranium, but does not verify ten games’ quality, platforms, current status and access conditions. Rather than invent a top ten, here is what can be responsibly said about the strongest documented candidate.
What makes a fan game feel official?
It is a judgment about craft, not legal status. A fan-made project may evoke an official release through polished presentation, familiar franchise design, mechanics that work together and enough original content to feel like a complete game. Those qualities do not mean the rights holder licensed, endorsed or currently distributes it.
A useful comparison would also check platform, maintenance and whether there is an authorized way to access the game. Those details matter as much as a project’s reputation: a polished game with uncertain distribution should not be presented as a straightforward recommendation.
Pokémon Uranium: the clearest documented example
Pokémon Uranium is a fan-made RPG built in RPG Maker XP by JV and InvoluntaryTwitch. Its development ran from 2007 to 2016, and the project created the Tandor region, more than 150 custom Pokémon and an exclusive Nuclear type, according to the project history. That combination of recognizable Pokémon structure and substantial original content helps explain why it can feel like a full franchise game while remaining a fan project.

Version 1.0 was released on August 6, 2016. The project history says original official support ceased about a month later; community members subsequently continued development. The distinction matters: community continuation is not the same as ongoing support from the original developers.
Support and access are separate questions
A community forum post dated September 21, 2016 reproduces the developers’ statement: “We, the developers of this game, will no longer be providing updates or support for Pokémon Uranium.” The post also describes community continuation (forum post).

PC Gamer reported on August 26, 2016 that Nintendo issued DMCA takedown notices to multiple download sources on August 13, after which the developers removed download links from their own site. The publication also reported more than 1.5 million downloads within weeks of release; that is a historical figure from 2016, not a current total (PC Gamer’s report). Given that history, current availability and authorization should not be assumed. This article does not point to mirrors or imply that any download source is authorized.
Why this is not a verified top ten
A “best” list needs enough evidence to compare each entry on consistent terms: franchise fidelity and polish, original content, gameplay, platform and accessibility, maintenance, and authorized distribution. The available documentation does not establish those details for ten candidates.

- AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) surfaced as a fan remake of Metroid II, but the available secondary coverage is not enough to verify its current availability, legal status or quality against the same criteria.
- Sonic Mania should not be casually labeled an unofficial fan game: surfaced material describes official Sega/Sonic Team involvement, which makes its category different. The available evidence does not support further claims here.
A reader discussion uses the phrase “good enough as the mainline games” for fan games, ROM hacks and fan remakes. That wording captures the kind of comparison players make, but an individual discussion is not evidence of broad consensus or a substitute for checking each game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a recommendation
Before treating a fan game as an official-quality alternative, check what the project itself documents and what its current distribution permits. A credible recommendation should identify the platform and current status, describe the specific design or gameplay qualities behind the praise, and distinguish original developer support from community maintenance. If those points cannot be established, a confident ranking—or a download recommendation—would overstate what is known.
