Fantasian pairs striking, handmade-diorama scenery and strategic turn-based battles with a story that can feel familiar to longtime fans of classic Final Fantasy. That tension is at the heart of iMore’s September 2021 review: it praised the game’s visual craft, music and combat flow, while warning that its narrative may not surprise players steeped in the genre.
What is Fantasian?
Fantasian is a single-player Japanese role-playing game created by Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker. It first launched through Apple Arcade in 2021. Its most unusual production choice is visible across its environments: many began as physical, handmade dioramas, which were photographed and 3D-scanned into the game. Character models, by contrast, are rendered separately in anime-inspired CG. The dioramas give the game a visual identity rooted in miniature physical sets rather than conventional all-digital landscapes. Sakaguchi described the appeal this way: “Things made by human hands have a soul. The details of our dioramas push the limits of what you can do with the human hand.”
What did iMore’s review think?
Published September 8, 2021, iMore’s review was enthusiastic about the artwork, Nobuo Uematsu’s music and the way the game’s turn-based combat supports a smooth exploration rhythm. It also praised touchscreen controls as intuitive. The reviewer noted that controller support was available, but felt it made little difference compared with touch; that is the review’s assessment, not a universal control preference.

The story is the main reservation
The review’s central criticism was that the narrative draws heavily on familiar elements of Sakaguchi’s earlier work. For a player who has spent decades with early Final Fantasy, its characters and story beats may feel more like a polished return to known territory than a fresh direction. That familiarity may be a feature for players who want classic JRPG conventions, but a drawback for anyone looking for a radical narrative departure.
How does combat work?
Fantasian uses turn-based battles, with a distinctive way to manage random encounters: the Dimengeon system stores enemies encountered while exploring so the player can fight them together later. iMore reported that it can hold up to 30 encounters. Saving encounters for later changes the pacing, not the underlying need to fight. There is a planning trade-off: once the Dimengeon is full, stored enemies trigger together, so choosing when to clear it matters. Attacks also involve more than selecting a target. Is the 2021 Apple Arcade release the same as Fantasian Neo Dimension?
No. Fantasian Neo Dimension is a later expanded release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC/Steam. Announced for release on December 5, 2024, it adds English and Japanese voice acting, another difficulty option and platform-specific 4K support. The 4K claim is platform-specific, not a blanket feature of every version: Sakaguchi discussed 4K diorama imagery on PS5, and Xbox Wire notes 4K support for Xbox Series X. The 2021 iMore review’s Apple Arcade details—including its listed iOS 13.0 requirement, 4.6 GB size and 50-hour play-time estimate—are launch-era information, not verified current requirements or a current subscription offer.
