fdrespub.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not a game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. When fdrespub.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first and then check the Function Discovery Resource Publication service.
What fdrespub.dll is
fdrespub.dll belongs to the Function Discovery Resource Publication service. Its Windows service name is FDResPub. The service publishes your computer and attached resources so other computers can discover them across the network.

Errors associated with fdrespub.dll
You may see one of these loader messages:
- “The program can’t start because fdrespub.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fdrespub.dll was not found.”
- “fdrespub.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
You may instead see a service-specific message:
- “Windows could not start the Function Discovery Resource Publication service on Local Computer.”
- “The FDResPub service terminated with the following error.”
- A service timeout or Event ID 7023.
These messages do not always mean the file itself is missing. The DLL can exist while the service fails because of damaged dependencies, incorrect service configuration, networking problems, firewall settings, or Windows component corruption.
The issue commonly appears during Windows startup, while enabling Network Discovery, when opening the Network section in File Explorer, or while discovering network printers and other devices.
Fix fdrespub.dll with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the error names fdrespub.dll directly.
1. Install pending Windows updates
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
An interrupted update or damaged component store can leave protected Windows files unusable. Updating first also ensures that the repair tools use the current servicing components.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses when replacing damaged protected files. Microsoft explains this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the action that produced the error.
Success means SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the same failure remains, continue to the recovery section below instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

Check whether the file is actually present
Before changing service settings, check the expected location.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
%WinDir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Look for
fdrespub.dll.
You can also check from an elevated Command Prompt:
dir "%WinDir%System32fdrespub.dll"
If the file is absent, do not copy one from another computer. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab. The signer should identify Microsoft. Also confirm that the file is inside the Windows directory, normally:
C:WindowsSystem32fdrespub.dll
The Windows directory may use a different drive or folder name on your installation, which is why %WinDir% is safer than assuming C:Windows.
A copy outside the Windows directory, an invalid Microsoft signature, or a service configuration pointing to an unusual executable deserves a malware scan and further investigation. It is not a reason to replace the file manually.
Check the FDResPub service
A missing DLL error and a failed service are related but not identical problems.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Function Discovery Resource Publication.
- Double-click it.
- Check Startup type.
The normal Microsoft-documented default is Manual. Do not automatically change it to Automatic for every computer. If it is set to Disabled, change it to Manual, select Apply, and then select Start.
If Start fails, note the exact error and open the Dependencies tab. Microsoft identifies HTTP and RPC among the important dependencies. Other discovery services can affect network browsing, including Function Discovery Provider Host, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host, but do not start every networking service indiscriminately.
Inspect the configuration from Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc.exe query FDResPub
sc.exe qc FDResPub
The first command shows whether the service is running, stopped, or failing. The second displays its configuration and dependencies.
If an administrator deliberately disabled the service and you need to restore its normal demand-start configuration, run:
sc.exe config FDResPub start= demand
There must be a space after start=. Restart Windows afterward and test Network Discovery again.
If the service is configured correctly and the DLL exists, the remaining problem may involve RPC, HTTP, the network stack, firewall rules, or another Windows component rather than fdrespub.dll.

Check antivirus quarantine and recent system changes
Security software can quarantine a system file after a detection or failed update.
- Open your antivirus or Windows security product.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
- Look for a detection involving
fdrespub.dll. - Confirm that the detected path is the expected Windows System32 location.
- Restore the file only when the file is digitally signed by Microsoft and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Run DISM and SFC after restoring it.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. An unsigned copy or a copy located outside %WinDir%System32 should be treated as suspicious.

If fdrespub.dll is present and Windows reports no file-integrity problem, focus on the service and network environment.
Check the following:
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Confirm that the active network is connected.
- Open the network’s properties and verify that the correct network profile is selected.
- Check Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
- Make sure firewall rules have not disabled Network Discovery for the active profile.
- Restart Windows after changing a network setting.
If the problem started after a network-driver update:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Record the provider and driver version.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or uninstall and restart only when appropriate for the recent change.
- Prefer the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official driver source.
If you are manually hunting through several driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation and repair features require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for Windows servicing or the manufacturer’s driver.

Updating a driver will not repair a missing Windows system DLL by itself. It is relevant when the file exists but network discovery began failing after a driver or networking change.
Why regsvr32 is not the right repair
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 fdrespub.dll
regsvr32 /u fdrespub.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. fdrespub.dll is a service DLL, not a normal self-registering COM component. Registering or unregistering it does not restore the Windows component store or repair the FDResPub service.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 syntax and behavior. Use it only when official documentation for a specific component explicitly requires it.
What not to do
Do not download fdrespub.dll from an unofficial DLL library or copy it from a random computer. That can introduce malware, provide the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the underlying component-store damage untouched.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that a 32-bit or 64-bit label alone makes a replacement safe. Windows uses special handling for System32 and SysWOW64 on 64-bit systems, and the correct file must match the installed Windows edition, architecture, build, signature, and servicing state.
Do not set FDResPub to Automatic as a universal fix. Microsoft lists Manual as the default, and changing startup behavior does not repair a corrupted DLL.
Do not delete and recreate the service unless a qualified administrator has first documented its configuration and created a recovery plan.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
If Windows still reports the error after updates, DISM, SFC, and a restart:
- Run
sc.exe qc FDResPuband save the output. - Open Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs > System.
- Look for errors at the time of the failure.
- Note references to FDResPub, RPC, HTTP, service timeouts, networking, or component servicing.
- Check whether the problem began after a known update or software change.
- Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
- If no restore point helps, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation.
Back up important files before resetting or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options cover repair and reinstall paths.
A manual replacement from a known-good installation should be considered only as an advanced recovery measure when Windows identifies the exact file and the matching Windows build, architecture, signature, and servicing state are verified. Windows repair or reinstallation is safer when those conditions cannot be established.
FAQ
Is fdrespub.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL normally located at %WinDir%System32fdrespub.dll. A file with the same name outside the Windows directory or without a valid Microsoft signature may be suspicious.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. fdrespub.dll is part of Windows and has no verified standalone Microsoft redistributable. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the primary fix.
Will repairing the DLL restore Network Discovery?
Not necessarily. Network discovery can still fail because of firewall settings, network profile configuration, service dependencies, RPC, HTTP, Winsock, or another discovery component.
Should FDResPub be set to Automatic?
Not by default. Microsoft lists Manual as the normal startup type. Restore it from Disabled to Manual when appropriate, then investigate dependencies if it will not start.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports an error?
Check the digital signature, run DISM followed by SFC, inspect sc.exe qc FDResPub, review System event logs, and investigate dependencies and recent networking changes.
Is it safe to copy fdrespub.dll from another PC?
Not as a general repair. A different Windows release, build, architecture, or servicing state can make the copied file incompatible. Use Windows servicing or an in-place repair instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
