The specific claim that a festival-goer’s $1,000 Airbnb booking was canceled and relisted for $9,200 is not corroborated by the available reporting. Separate reports describe guests alleging event-related cancellations followed by much higher prices, but they do not verify those amounts or establish what happened in the $1,000-to-$9,200 case.
What is confirmed about the $1,000-to-$9,200 claim?
The precise incident in the headline remains unverified: the reporting available here does not identify its original source or confirm the guest, host, location, festival, or prices. It should be treated as an allegation, not an established finding.
There are separate, reported cases with similar allegations. KESQ reported on April 8, 2026, that Coachella attendee Andrea Gutierrez said her Palm Desert rental was canceled after the host cited city rules. Gutierrez said the same listing appeared a few hours later for $5,000 instead of $2,000. Those are her claims as reported by KESQ, not an adjudicated finding or confirmation of the headline’s separate figures. KESQ’s report also quoted Airbnb saying it was not seeing a notable uptick in cancellations and that its deterrents included cancellation fees, calendar blocks, and a ban on relisting at a higher price.
In a different case, ABC News reported in February 2024 on Sydney concertgoers who said hosts canceled last-minute and replacement accommodation cost much more. A Consumer Rescue report covered a Palm Springs wedding-week booking that the reporter said reappeared for the same dates at a higher price; after escalation, the host agreed to honor the original price. Neither case verifies the $1,000-to-$9,200 claim, and one guest’s resolution is not a guaranteed remedy.

What to do if an Airbnb host canceled your booking and relisted it
- Save your records. Keep the original reservation confirmation, cancellation notice, and messages with the host and platform. Take dated screenshots of the listing, including its dates, price, and identifying details, if it appears to be available again. Consumer Rescue recommends screenshots in its separate case report.
- Contact Airbnb promptly. Provide the reservation record and any evidence that the same property is listed for the same dates at a different price. ABC News reported that Airbnb directed guests who saw the same property relisted for the same dates to its 24-hour support team.
- Ask for a practical resolution. Explain what changed, what evidence you have, and what help you need with replacement lodging. Do not assume a relisting alone guarantees a refund, compensation, or reinstatement of the original booking.
- Check local rules for the property’s city. In the Palm Desert example, a city representative told KESQ that short-term rentals, including weekend and special-event rentals, were allowed if operators held a valid city permit. That statement concerns Palm Desert; rental rules differ by location.
- Look into local consumer protections. Rights and remedies depend on where the booking took place and the circumstances. ABC News quoted Australia’s consumer regulator saying accommodation providers must comply with Australian Consumer Law, including not misleading consumers about cancellation reasons. That guidance is specific to Australia, not a universal rule.
How to compare replacement lodging before booking
When a festival is close, compare the full cost and whether the alternative will work for your group—not just its nightly price or distance to the venue.
