To loop a local MP4 into a YouTube Live stream from Windows, use FFmpeg with -re and -stream_loop -1 before the input file. This template encodes H.264 video and AAC audio and sends the feed to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube stream:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathvideo.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the file path and destination placeholders with your own values. The 60-frame keyframe interval is two seconds only for a 30-fps source. Match it to your video’s frame rate, then test the incoming feed in YouTube Studio before broadcasting publicly.
What the command does—and what you must change
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. -re reads a file at its native frame rate, pacing it in real time instead of sending it as fast as the computer can process it. Both are input options, so they belong before the relevant -i.
The example is a starting template for a 30-fps source and roughly 4.5 Mbps H.264 video. It is not a tested command for every Windows computer or FFmpeg build. Confirm your installed build includes libx264, and adjust the settings to suit the source and your connection.

-i "C:pathvideo.mp4": the local MP4 file to loop.-c:v libx264: encode video as H.264.-preset veryfast: choose an x264 encoding-speed preset. This is an example, not a YouTube requirement.-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k: set the example video bitrate, maximum rate and rate-control buffer.-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0: use a 60-frame GOP with a fixed keyframe cadence. For 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; change it for other frame rates.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100: encode audio as AAC at the example bitrate and sample rate. Prepare the YouTube stream and start FFmpeg
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from its settings. Put them together in the command’s final destination argument, replacing the entire placeholder. YouTube’s setup guide explains where to enter the URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open Command Prompt, paste the edited command, and press Enter. If Windows cannot find FFmpeg, install or configure FFmpeg so its executable is available to Command Prompt, or run the command from the directory containing
ffmpeg.exe. - For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready. For an immediately active stream, follow the controls shown for that stream.
- Check that video and audio arrive correctly. Test representative motion and sound, then monitor stream health and warnings while it is live.
- To stop sending the feed, interrupt FFmpeg in Command Prompt. Use Live Control Room’s End Stream control when applicable. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive guarantee for longer broadcasts.
Choose bitrate, keyframes and transport
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The template uses the broadly used H.264/AAC combination. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Set the keyframe interval for the actual frame rate
YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. The command’s -g 60 is appropriate for a two-second interval at 30 fps; for a 60-fps source, for example, a two-second GOP would be 120 frames. Set -g and -keyint_min to the same frame count for a fixed interval, and retain -sc_threshold 0 to disable scene-cut keyframes in this example.

Do not copy the example bitrate blindly
YouTube’s guidance accessed 2026-10-03 lists 5 Mbps as the minimum setting and 14 Mbps as the recommended setting for 1080p/30 fps H.264. These are YouTube configuration recommendations for that format, not measurements of your connection or a guarantee that a particular bitrate will work for your file. Select a bitrate appropriate to the source’s resolution and frame rate, and ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry it reliably. YouTube recommends CBR; the template uses bitrate, maximum-rate and buffer options as a starting rate-control configuration.
Protect the stream key
Treat the URL and key as credentials: together they authorize a feed to your channel. Do not share or publish them. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the command; the encoder must use the new key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys and resetting them.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg and YouTube problems
- FFmpeg stops instead of looping: put
-stream_loop -1before the input’s-i, and check that the path points to a readable file. - The video races ahead or arrives in a burst: keep
-rebefore-iwhen reading a file. It paces file input in real time; do not use it this way on an actual capture or live input. - YouTube does not accept the feed: check that the endpoint and key belong to the selected stream, that the outgoing codec and container are accepted, and that bitrate and keyframe timing align with YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- There is no audio: check whether the MP4 contains an audio stream and whether your FFmpeg build supports AAC encoding. The template re-encodes audio to AAC but cannot create audio absent from the source.
- The feed is unstable or exceeds upload capacity: reduce resolution or bitrate to settings your connection can sustain, and test before going live. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, a wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to improve connection consistency; it is not a requirement of FFmpeg.
- The image or sound differs from the file: check the incoming preview before starting the public broadcast and verify the selected input file, audio stream and encoding settings.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check for third-party music, game footage, or other material that may trigger a claim or restriction. Review YouTube’s live controls and stream warnings before and during the broadcast; do not assume that an MP4 that plays locally is cleared for public streaming.
