Concat Demuxer

FFmpeg Concat Demuxer vs. Concat Filter for a YouTube Video Playlist

Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to stream-copy compatible clips; use the concat filter when you need filtering or re-encoding. See commands, compatibility checks, and fixes for common join problems.

Use the concat demuxer when your clips have matching streams and you want to join them without re-encoding; use the concat filter when you need to filter or convert the media and can re-encode. YouTube is the destination, but it does not determine which FFmpeg method is right—the clips’ streams and the edit you need do.

How the two FFmpeg methods differ

Decision Concat demuxer Concat filter
Best fit Joining compatible files while avoiding re-encoding. Joining clips as part of a re-encoding workflow, such as when you need to filter or normalize decoded media.
What FFmpeg processes Packets from files listed in sequence, presented as if they were muxed together. Decoded media through a filtergraph; filtered streams must be encoded again.
Input compatibility Files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. The graph must be configured for the inputs and the output you want; it is not an automatic fix for every stream-layout or synchronization issue.
Timing consideration Timestamp adjustment uses each file’s duration. Different audio and video lengths can leave gaps, and inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts. Plan and configure the graph for the actual media. Choosing a filter does not, by itself, guarantee correct synchronization.
Playlist input A text script with one file directive per input, plus optional directives. Inputs are connected in a filtergraph rather than listed in a concat-demuxer script.

FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter for workflows that require re-encoding and distinguishes it from the demuxer’s stream-copy use case (FFmpeg FAQ). Streamcopy passes encoded packets onward without decoding, filtering, or encoding, so it cannot apply filters (FFmpeg command-line documentation).

Check your clips before choosing

Choose the demuxer only when the streams match

Compare the clips’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases before building the list. The concat demuxer requires matching streams; a difference in those properties can make the join fail. A difference in resolution alone does not remove that requirement. FFmpeg documents a limited automatic conversion for H.264 in MP4—adding the h264_mp4toannexb bitstream filter in applicable cases, including some resolution changes—but this does not make otherwise mismatched inputs interchangeable (FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation).

Choose the filter when the edit needs processing

If the clips need resizing, cropping, normalization, or another filter, use a filtergraph and encode the filtered output. The graph still needs to reflect the real inputs: for example, whether each clip has an audio stream and which output streams you want. Do not expect -c copy to apply a filter.

Join compatible clips without re-encoding

This pattern is for files whose streams meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements and whose stream and container formats can be copied into the chosen output container. Use relative, safe paths when practical.

  1. Create a playlist file. Save this as plain text, for example playlist.ffconcat. The first line is the exact format-recognition header; list one input on each subsequent line:
    ffconcat version 1.0
    file 'clip-01.mp4'
    file 'clip-02.mp4'
    file 'clip-03.mp4'
  2. Run FFmpeg from the directory containing the clips and playlist:
    ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4

-f concat selects the concat demuxer, and -c copy requests streamcopy instead of re-encoding.

  3. Check the result. Play the output and inspect transitions, audio, and duration before uploading it to YouTube. This is a practical quality check, not a claim that the command guarantees a particular YouTube upload format.

Paths, quoting, and safety

The demuxer reads a text script. Quote or escape spaces and special characters in paths according to the script syntax. Safe-path validation is enabled by default (safe 1); it rejects paths outside the documented safe forms. Prefer portable relative paths. If absolute or otherwise excluded paths are necessary, -safe 0 disables that validation, so use it only with a playlist and paths you trust—for example:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4

Do not use a playlist containing untrusted paths with safe validation disabled.

Duration overrides and boundary timing

The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally using file durations. If a file’s audio and video streams have different lengths, the next file may begin with a gap; an incorrect stored duration can also cause boundary artifacts. The script format supports a duration directive to override a file’s reported duration. Use it only when you have a reliable duration value; it is not a general-purpose synchronization repair.

Join clips through a filtergraph and re-encode

Use a concat filter when streamcopy is unsuitable or the edit requires processing. This example assumes exactly three inputs, each with one video stream and one audio stream. It concatenates each input’s video and audio in order, then encodes an MP4 output:

ffmpeg -i clip-01.mp4 -i clip-02.mp4 -i clip-03.mp4
-filter_complex "[0:v:0][0:a:0][1:v:0][1:a:0][2:v:0][2:a:0]concat=n=3:v=1:a=1[outv][outa]"
-map "[outv]" -map "[outa]" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

This is a starting pattern, not a universal graph: it assumes every input has both streams and that the inputs can be concatenated as configured. If a clip has no audio stream, this exact graph will not work; create a suitable audio stream for that input or use a graph designed for the actual stream layout. Add video or audio filters inside the graph when needed, and choose encoding settings appropriate to your output. Re-encoding takes processing time and is a separate generation of encoding; the concat filter is the appropriate route when that processing is part of the job.

Troubleshoot common concat problems

  • “Streams do not match” or the demuxer refuses an input: inspect each file and compare its stream count and layout, codecs, and time bases. The demuxer expects matching streams.
  • A gap or artifact appears at a join: check whether the audio and video durations differ and whether the container’s reported duration is accurate. If a reported duration is wrong and you know the correct value, consider the demuxer’s duration directive.
  • Absolute paths are rejected: safe-path validation is on by default. Use eligible relative paths where possible; use -safe 0 only when necessary and only with trusted paths.
  • You need to resize, crop, normalize, or otherwise filter: switch to a filtergraph and re-encode the affected output. Streamcopy cannot apply filters.
  • The streamcopy command is fast, so you suspect it changed quality: streamcopy does not decode or encode the packets, so it does not add a re-encoding generation. It can still fail when stream or container constraints are incompatible.

What the YouTube destination changes—and what it does not

The concat choice is about how FFmpeg joins the clips, not about a YouTube-specific concat mode. The FFmpeg documentation cited here covers concatenation and processing, not YouTube’s current upload encoding, size, or codec requirements. Check your finished file’s streams and playback, and consult YouTube’s current upload guidance separately if you need platform specifications.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is not to make one joined upload but to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a way to create a single concatenated video file. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
