Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your video files have matching streams and you want to play them in sequence—often without re-encoding. Use the concat filter when clips need filtering, normalization, or a common output format, because that workflow decodes and re-encodes them. Neither method creates a YouTube playlist URL: FFmpeg produces or feeds media, and YouTube Live separately needs an encoder output configured with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
| Method | Use it when | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files have matching streams and you want FFmpeg to read them sequentially, potentially using stream copy. | All files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect or missing duration information can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts. FFmpeg documentation |
| Concat filter | Clips need filtering, normalization, or re-encoding to a common output. | Requires decoding and encoding; stream copy cannot apply filters. FFmpeg FAQ |
| Concat protocol | A specific supported format allows file-level concatenation. | Format-dependent, with MPEG-1, MPEG-2 program stream, and DV among the documented examples; it is not the general playlist method. FFmpeg FAQ |
Do not assume the demuxer can seamlessly join arbitrary videos with different resolutions, codecs, time bases, or stream counts. Inspect the inputs first; if their layouts differ, prepare consistent files or use a filter-and-encode workflow.
Make a text playlist for the concat demuxer
Create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt with one file directive per video:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'segment-01.mp4'
file 'segment-02.mp4'
file 'segment-03.mp4'
For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line: do not add spaces or a byte-order mark before it. Quote or escape paths that contain spaces or special characters. Paths are interpreted in relation to where FFmpeg runs, so use suitable relative paths or full paths for your setup. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the script syntax and directives.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the demuxer does with timestamps
The demuxer presents packets from each listed file in order and adjusts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and later files follow the prior file’s duration. This is a global operation: streams with unequal lengths can produce gaps. If a file’s stored duration is inaccurate or unavailable, a duration directive can override it, but an inaccurate override can itself create artifacts. FFmpeg documentation

ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.txt -c copy joined-output.mkv
-c copy copies encoded packets without decoding and re-encoding. It is efficient when the inputs are compatible, but it cannot apply filters or change encoding settings. The chosen output container must support the streams. If your YouTube-facing output needs different codec, bitrate, frame rate, or audio settings, use an encode workflow rather than assuming this copy command is ready for ingest. FFmpeg stream-copy and filtering documentation
Use the concat filter when clips need normalization
For inputs requiring re-encoding or filtering, the general structure is multiple -i inputs, a -filter_complex graph containing concat, explicit maps for the resulting video and audio labels, and encoder and muxer options. The exact graph depends on the number of clips and which audio and video streams each contains; there is no safe universal copy-paste command without those details. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter when re-encoding is required. FFmpeg FAQ

Configure the output for YouTube Live
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the Stream URL and stream key, then configure your encoder with those values. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and out of public scripts, playlist files, and examples. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
- Select a supported codec and set the output format. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Its recommended ingest settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current table for your exact output. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Set rate control and keyframes. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingest recommendations, not guaranteed FFmpeg defaults; set and verify them in the actual encoder configuration. For example, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. YouTube encoder settings
- Configure audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Its advanced recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. YouTube encoder settings
- Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest URL supplied in Live Control Room and ensure your encoder is configured for the corresponding protocol. YouTube encoder settings
The numbers above reflect YouTube Help’s current guidance as accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. Recheck the live settings table before a broadcast because recommendations can change.
Common problems and fixes
- “Unsafe file name” or files do not open: check that the playlist’s first line is exact, that there is no byte-order mark, and that each path is quoted or escaped correctly. Confirm FFmpeg is being run from the expected working directory.
- Concat fails on a later file or output has missing streams: compare every input’s stream layout, codec, and time base. The demuxer requires matching streams; normalize incompatible inputs with a filter-and-encode workflow instead. FFmpeg documentation
- There is a pause, gap, or timestamp artifact between clips: inspect duration metadata and stream lengths. The demuxer uses durations to offset later timestamps; where needed, use an accurate
durationdirective, then test the resulting timeline. FFmpeg documentation - A filter does not take effect: remove stream copy for streams that need filtering and use a decode/filter/encode pipeline. Packet copying cannot modify decoded frames. FFmpeg documentation
- YouTube rejects or struggles with the live feed: verify the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then check codec, bitrate for the exact resolution and frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current table. YouTube stream setup · YouTube encoder settings
