FFmpeg’s drop counter does not automatically mean your internet connection is failing. It can also reflect frame-rate conversion or timestamp handling. First determine whether frames are being lost or adjusted inside FFmpeg, whether encoding is keeping up, or whether a healthy local output is failing on its way to YouTube.
First, identify which part of the stream is dropping frames
A live video passes through several stages: source frames and timestamps enter FFmpeg, FFmpeg synchronizes and encodes them, the encoded stream travels over your connection, and YouTube ingests it before viewers receive playback. A problem at one stage can look like a problem at another.
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
FFmpeg reports drop, but local output looks and sounds healthy |
Check FFmpeg’s frame-rate and synchronization settings, then compare the encoder output with YouTube’s stream health. |
| Local recording or encoder preview also looks bad | Check the source, timestamps, encoder errors, and CPU load before blaming the network. |
| Local output is healthy, but YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem | Check stable outbound upload capacity, bitrate, the destination and stream key, and Live Control Room messages. |
| Viewers report buffering while the local output and ingest appear healthy | Consider viewer playback conditions and latency separately from FFmpeg’s drop count. |
Do not treat FFmpeg’s progress-line drop value and YouTube’s stream-health warnings as interchangeable measurements. Read the complete FFmpeg log and check what produced the counter. FFmpeg documents that constant-frame-rate output can duplicate or drop frames to reach the requested rate; the counter alone does not establish an internet fault. See the FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s troubleshooting guide.

fps: the processing frame rate being reported.speed: whether processing is keeping up with real time. A sustained value below1xis a reason to investigate encoding workload or input handling.dupanddrop: frames duplicated or dropped as part of synchronization behavior; interpret them alongside the selected frame rate and the full log.- Output bitrate: compare it with the target settings and your stable upload capacity.
- Timestamp, input, and encoder messages: these can point to source cadence, synchronization, or encoding problems.
Look for trends rather than reacting to a single progress update. A rising drop count, falling reported frame rate, sustained slow speed, or repeated timestamp warnings each give different clues. The exact meaning depends on the FFmpeg build and command options, so compare the online manual with the version installed on your system.
Check whether FFmpeg’s frame-rate settings match the source
Compare the source’s actual frame rate and timestamps with the output options in your command. FFmpeg’s output -r can duplicate or drop frames before encoding to reach a constant output rate. The -fps_mode option controls synchronization behavior: cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach the requested constant rate, passthrough passes frames with their timestamps, and vfr may drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. These options describe different behaviors, not universal fixes.

- Check the input frame rate and whether its timestamps are regular or variable.
- Read the command for output
-rand-fps_modesettings, and establish what each is doing before changing it. - Run a short test after a controlled change and compare the FFmpeg log, local output, and YouTube stream health.
Do not add -re reflexively. FFmpeg says it reads input at its native frame rate and is mainly useful to simulate a capture or live source when sending a file. On an actual capture device or live input, using a low read rate can cause packet loss. Consult the FFmpeg manual for the behavior applicable to your input and build.
Find out whether encoding can keep up
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, the local archive, and the look and sound inside the encoder. If the local recording is also impaired, start with the input and encoding path instead of buying network equipment.

- Check whether
speedstays below real time or the reported frame rate falls during the same periods as the problem. - Look for elevated CPU load, encoder errors, or other warnings in FFmpeg’s output.
- Review the local recording for choppy video, missing sections, or audio problems. YouTube also advises checking that an archive file is intact and continues to grow during the stream.
- Update the encoder software, as YouTube advises. If evidence points to encoding capacity, reduce workload or output complexity for a controlled test and compare results.
If the local output is healthy but YouTube’s stream is not, investigate the connection and ingest path next. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder checks from outbound internet issues.
Match the bitrate to reliable upload capacity
YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can sustain and testing upload speed before streaming. Compare the stream’s target bitrate with stable upload performance, not just a best-case speed-test result. Leave practical headroom for variation and other network traffic; that is a troubleshooting precaution, not a numeric threshold set by YouTube.

The current YouTube encoder settings page lists these recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates for the specified modes. They are recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them:
| Output mode | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings support up to 60 fps. The page also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe every 2 seconds, with no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. These are configuration checks, not universal cures for dropped frames. Confirm current guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings, since platform recommendations can change.

- Run a speed test that reflects the connection you will use for the stream.
- Compare the stream’s target bitrate with upload performance that is stable under representative conditions.
- If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target, test a lower output quality or bitrate and check both local output and YouTube stream health.
- If a test identifies an outbound connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. A wired connection may be worth testing if available, but it will not fix encoding load, frame synchronization, limited service bandwidth, or an ISP-side fault.
Verify the YouTube destination and monitor a test stream
If the stream will not start, confirm the destination and current stream key, then read any message in YouTube Live Control Room. If it starts but shows problems, use a representative preflight test before relying on it for an event.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the real stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the test.
- Compare YouTube’s status with FFmpeg’s log and the local archive so you can identify which stage is failing.
YouTube’s guidance is to “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See its encoder settings, troubleshooting, and live streaming tips.
Keep latency separate from frame drops
Latency is the delay between capture and display; it is not a general explanation or fix for FFmpeg’s drop counter. YouTube says lower latency means less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can make viewers more likely to encounter buffering. Network congestion can affect a live stream, and YouTube’s low-latency and ultra-low-latency modes do not support 4K. Choose a latency mode for the interaction you need, not as a way to fix encoder synchronization. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg’s drop count rises, but the local recording is clean |
Frame-rate conversion or synchronization behavior | Check input cadence, timestamps, output -r, and -fps_mode; then compare with YouTube’s stream-health information. |
speed remains below real time, or local video is choppy |
Encoding workload, input, or machine capacity | Check CPU load, encoder errors, and the archive; test reduced workload or output complexity. |
| Local output is good, but YouTube reports stream or connection trouble | Outbound upload capacity or ingest configuration | Check stable upload performance and bitrate, then verify destination, stream key, and Live Control Room messages. |
| The stream fails to start | Destination, current stream key, or YouTube status message | Confirm the destination and key, then follow the message shown in Live Control Room. |
| Viewers buffer, but the encoder output is healthy | Latency, network congestion, or viewer playback | Review latency trade-offs and stream health; do not infer a local FFmpeg frame-drop cause from buffering alone. |
