Use the concat demuxer when you want several episodes to play in a chosen order; add -stream_loop -1 to the concat input if the whole playlist should repeat. The single-file method is simpler. A concat playlist gives you programming control, but its files need compatible streams and accurate durations. Neither method alone keeps a stream running through every process, network, or YouTube failure.

These choices affect how FFmpeg reads source files. They do not, by themselves, provide process supervision, restart policy, network recovery, rights to broadcast the cartoons, or confirmation that YouTube considers the incoming stream healthy.
Repeat a single cartoon file with -stream_loop -1
FFmpeg documents 0 as no looping and -1 as infinite looping. It is an input option, so put it before the -i for the file you want to repeat:

For file-based streaming, -re is equivalent to -readrate 1: it reads the file at its native frame rate so output is paced in real time. FFmpeg cautions against low read rates on actual capture devices or live streams, where pacing can cause packet loss. That warning is particularly relevant if you adapt a file command to a live input.
Why this is the straightforward option
- Only one media file needs to be selected and validated.
- The repeat point is the end of that file; there are no episode-to-episode concat boundaries to manage.
- Any visible or audible jump at the repeat point is already part of the source’s ending and beginning. Inspect that boundary before leaving the stream unattended.
Build and repeat a concat playlist
The concat demuxer reads a text script of file entries and emits their packets in sequence as if the files had been combined. Create a plain-text file named episodes.txt, using paths appropriate to the machine running FFmpeg:

Use it only with a playlist you control: do not accept untrusted playlist entries as command input. If your paths and FFmpeg build support safe relative entries, prefer a playlist and invocation that do not require disabling the safe-path check. The repeated concat-input composition follows from FFmpeg’s documented input-loop and concat behavior; test it with your own FFmpeg version and files before relying on it.

Check source compatibility before using concat
The concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including the same codecs and time base. A collection of cartoons encoded with different stream layouts or formats may not concatenate cleanly as packets. If needed, normalize or transcode files to a common stream layout, then check the transitions using the resulting files. Matching the documented requirements improves compatibility but is not a guarantee that every source will play seamlessly.
Check durations and episode boundaries
Concat uses each file’s duration to position the next one. Inaccurate stored duration—such as duration derived from bitrate or a truncated file—can create timestamp artifacts. The concat script’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration, but it must reflect the media’s actual timing. Check both audio and video endings: streams of different lengths can leave timestamp gaps when the next file begins.

The inpoint and outpoint directives are not a guarantee of frame-accurate cuts. FFmpeg’s format documentation notes that they work best with intra-frame codecs in relevant cases; with non-intra codecs, packets or decoded frames may fall outside the requested boundaries. Test any trim points with the actual source formats.
Set the outgoing stream for YouTube
Use the settings for your intended resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec—not one bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not more than 4 seconds). Its bitrate table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30; that is YouTube guidance and may change. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and choose the relevant row for your output.

In the FFmpeg examples, -g 60 at 30 fps sets a 60-frame GOP, or a 2-second keyframe interval. Adjust the GOP to match the output frame rate and YouTube’s current guidance. The example’s 5 Mbps video bitrate is illustrative; it is not the recommended bitrate for every resolution or codec, and it is below YouTube’s stated 1080p30 H.264 recommended value.
Connect FFmpeg to the live event
- Create or open the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the event. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these in the encoder; the exact interface can vary as YouTube updates its live-streaming UI. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Substitute the ingest values. Replace the example destination with YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the format required by your FFmpeg output. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it in commands, or leave it exposed in logs. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls.
- Test before relying on the stream. Run the command with representative cartoon motion and audio. Confirm the picture, sound, repeat or episode transitions, and YouTube stream health before leaving it running. YouTube’s Help page says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor the stream. Watch YouTube’s health indicator and messages during startup and operation. An FFmpeg process that is still running does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Protect the channel’s rights and eligibility
A technical ability to loop a cartoon is not permission to broadcast it. Use material you own, have licensed for this use, or are otherwise legally entitled to stream. Copyright claims or takedowns can interrupt a stream or affect the channel. A continuous stream also does not automatically make reused material eligible for monetization; consider the channel’s rights and YouTube policies separately from FFmpeg’s ability to send video.
Where the two methods can fail
- Concat errors or failed transitions: inspect stream layouts, codecs, and time bases; normalize mismatched files and test transitions with the actual encoded media.
- Timestamp gaps or artifacts: verify stored file durations and align audio/video endings. If a duration is wrong, use a carefully verified concat-script
durationvalue. - Unexpected frames at trim points: do not assume
inpointoroutpointgives frame-accurate cuts for non-intra codecs; inspect the decoded result. - FFmpeg runs but YouTube has poor stream health: check that the ingest URL and key are current, and compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current table. Use YouTube’s health messages to diagnose ingest issues.
- Stream stops after a local failure: looping an input does not restart a crashed FFmpeg process, restore a lost network connection, or supervise the machine. Add and test separate process and system recovery measures if you run it yourself.
- Audio or picture jumps at a loop or playlist boundary: review the source ending and beginning, then verify duration metadata and the relative audio/video lengths. A playlist cannot repair an abrupt cut already in the files.
