For 4K/2160p at 60 fps on YouTube Live with FFmpeg’s libx264, start with H.264 at 50 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. At 60 fps, that interval is 120 frames. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for this mode, but the minimum is not a quality target. Use RTMPS when the ingest endpoint supports it, and test the complete setup with representative video and audio before relying on it for a live event. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are the basis for these targets.
Baseline FFmpeg command for 4K60 YouTube Live
This is a starting configuration for a progressive 3840×2160, 60 fps SDR source. It is based on YouTube’s ingest guidance and FFmpeg’s documented encoder controls; it has not been tested and is not guaranteed to run in real time on every system. Replace the input, ingest URL, and stream key with your own values.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0 -bf 2 -refs 1
-b:v 50M -minrate 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
-color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current ingest endpoint and stream key into the output URL. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
What each setting does
| Setting | Command value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Input pacing | -re |
Paces a file input in real time. Omit it for live capture, using the appropriate capture input instead. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840×2160 progressive at 60 fps | The source must actually provide this mode. Use deliberate scaling or frame-rate conversion only when needed; the command does not specify a scale filter. |
| Video encoder | -c:v libx264 |
Encodes H.264 in software through FFmpeg’s libx264 wrapper. |
| Preset | -preset veryfast |
A practical starting point, not a guarantee of real-time 4K60 encoding. The system’s actual performance determines whether it is fast enough. |
| Profile and pixel format | -profile:v high -pix_fmt yuv420p |
A common 8-bit SDR H.264 compatibility configuration. YouTube’s advanced live guidance specifies 8-bit SDR and square pixels. |
| Frame rate and keyframes | -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0 |
At 60 fps, 120 frames equal two seconds. This aims for regularly spaced keyframes; YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| B-frames and references | -bf 2 -refs 1 |
Matches YouTube’s advanced guidance. Confirm the selected x264 build applies the options as expected. |
| Video rate control | -b:v 50M -minrate 50M -maxrate 50M |
Equal target, minimum, and maximum rates express the intended CBR mode. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K60 and lists 14 Mbps as its minimum. |
| Rate buffer | -bufsize 100M |
An implementation choice in this example, not a YouTube requirement. |
| SDR color | -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709 |
Sets Rec. 709 color signaling, YouTube’s SDR recommendation. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | The command’s audio settings match YouTube’s listed stereo guidance for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Output protocol and muxer | RTMPS with FLV muxing | YouTube recommends RTMPS over RTMP when available. FFmpeg uses FLV muxing for RTMP-family output. |
The figures above are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not a promise of a particular picture quality or a guarantee that a connection and encoder can sustain the stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings page for its current recommendations.

Check the source and machine before going live
Confirm the input mode
Make sure the source is progressive 3840×2160 at 60 fps. A 4K60 output setting cannot create detail or motion information absent from the input. If your source is a different size or frame rate, decide whether to scale or convert it intentionally rather than assuming this command will do so.
Test real-time encoding headroom
veryfast is only a starting preset. No universal CPU specification or preset is guaranteed to encode 4K60 in real time. Test the actual machine with footage that has motion and audio similar to the intended stream, and watch for encoding speed below real time, missed or dropped frames, and YouTube stream-health warnings. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency if the system can sustain it; a faster preset may be necessary when frames are missed, with a potential quality trade-off.

Check upload capacity
The stream needs stable upload capacity for its video and audio, with headroom for variation and other network use. Test the connection under realistic conditions, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and warnings during a private or unlisted rehearsal. YouTube’s 50 Mbps figure is the recommended video ingest bitrate, not a recommendation for an uploaded video file.
Verify the installed FFmpeg build
FFmpeg’s -b option uses bits per second; the x264 bitrate parameter uses kilobits per second. The libx264 wrapper accepts x264 options, but available controls can vary by build. Check the encoder help for the FFmpeg installation you will actually use, and consult the FFmpeg documentation for the wrapper’s options.

Keep live-stream settings separate from upload settings
These numbers are for sending a live stream to YouTube. They are not the same as YouTube’s recommendations for encoding a video file before uploading it. YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings specify variable bitrate and different 4K60 guidance; do not substitute upload figures for live ingest targets.
When the network cannot sustain 50 Mbps
First determine whether the problem is the connection or the encoder. If the encoder is falling behind, change the preset or reduce its workload and retest. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended live rate, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 4K60, but using less bandwidth can reduce quality and does not guarantee a stable stream. Test at the chosen rate and watch stream health rather than treating the minimum as an ideal setting.

If you are free to choose the ingest codec, YouTube lists 35 Mbps recommended and 10 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265 at 4K60, compared with 50 Mbps recommended and 14 Mbps minimum for H.264. These are YouTube platform targets, not a direct quality comparison. This command specifically uses libx264, so those alternative codec figures do not apply to it.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The stream buffers or YouTube reports connection instability: Check sustained upload capacity, competing network traffic, and the selected bitrate. Test the connection during a representative stream rather than relying on a brief speed result.
- FFmpeg cannot keep up or frames are dropped: Check encoding speed and system load. Try a faster preset or reduce other workload, then test again; the faster preset may trade compression efficiency for speed.
- The keyframe interval is wrong or inconsistent: Confirm the output is actually 60 fps and that the installed encoder supports the options used. This command sets a 120-frame GOP and matching minimum interval, suppressing scene-cut placement to aim for two-second spacing.
- The stream is not accepted by YouTube: Recheck the ingest URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room, and verify the output uses RTMPS where the endpoint supports it. Keep the key private.
- The stream has no audio or audio is unsuitable: Confirm the input contains the expected audio track and that AAC encoding is enabled. Test with audio and motion similar to the intended event.
- Colors or aspect look wrong: Check that the source is SDR and that its dimensions and pixel geometry are as expected. This baseline signals Rec. 709 SDR; YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify square pixels.
Copyright, live access, and channel policies
Technical settings do not grant permission to broadcast a game, soundtrack, or other creator’s footage. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the game video, music, overlays, and any other material in the feed. Also check your channel’s eligibility and current YouTube Live requirements in YouTube Studio. A technically healthy ingest cannot prevent a copyright claim, restriction, or policy action.
