FFmpeg Settings for Sending Hindi Videos to YouTube Live over HLS

Hindi does not change YouTube’s HLS requirements. Use the correct live ingest URL, MPEG-TS segments, a supported video codec, one AAC track, and a rolling media playlist.

To send a Hindi video to YouTube Live using HLS, configure an HLS ingest—not just a local playlist—with MPEG-TS segments, one H.264 or HEVC video stream, one AAC audio track, a closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist. Use the HTTPS ingest URL generated in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s HLS requirements apply to the media and upload protocol, not to the language spoken in the video.

A local .m3u8 file and segment folder are not, by themselves, a live stream. YouTube expects an encoder to send segments and update a media playlist to its HLS endpoint. FFmpeg documents HLS output options, but a generic FFmpeg command is not proof that it will perform YouTube’s required request sequence correctly.

Choose YouTube HLS ingest, not a static HLS package

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and select HLS as the stream protocol. Use the HTTPS stream URL YouTube provides for that ingest. Keep the URL and any stream-specific credentials private: they can grant access to your broadcast.

HLS ingest is a live upload protocol. The encoder sends media segments using HTTPS POST or PUT requests and updates a media playlist as the stream progresses. A static HLS package intended for video-on-demand playback—or a master playlist that points to several renditions—is not the same thing. YouTube’s HLS ingest supports media playlists and ignores master playlists.

Media settings YouTube expects

Setting Use for YouTube HLS ingest Practical note
Container and segments MPEG-TS segments, with M2TS-compatible media In FFmpeg, select -hls_segment_type mpegts. Do not use fMP4 segments or byte-range output for this ingest.
Video codec H.264 or HEVC Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow. H.264 is required if you need embedded 608/708 captions.
Audio codec and tracks One AAC audio track The YouTube Live Streaming API HLS guide states: “The supported audio codec is AAC, and only single-track audio is supported.” Keep the Hindi program audio as that track.
GOP Closed GOP Make keyframe/GOP behavior consistent with your chosen segment duration; do not assume a muxer option alone guarantees the encoded GOP is closed.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Keep the output rate within YouTube’s documented maximum and avoid changing frame rate without a reason.
Segment duration 1–4 seconds recommended; no segment over 5 seconds YouTube says shorter segments may reduce latency but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency.
Playlist Rolling media playlist, updated for each segment Keep no more than five segments outstanding, as required by YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Delivery HTTPS POST or PUT to the YouTube-provided ingest URL Follow YouTube’s acknowledgement and sequence-number behavior; a local playlist alone does not deliver media.

Hindi audio, bitrate, and captions

There is no Hindi-specific video codec or HLS setting in YouTube’s documented requirements. Treat the Hindi soundtrack as the program audio and encode it as a single AAC track. YouTube Help recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio, and 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. These are audio recommendations, not language-specific rules.

For video, select a resolution and bitrate appropriate to your source, encoder, and available upload bandwidth. The cited YouTube requirements establish codec and frame-rate constraints, but do not establish one universally correct bitrate for every Hindi recording. Avoid upscaling low-resolution footage merely to hit a larger output number.

Handle subtitles separately from spoken audio. YouTube’s HLS API guide describes sending captions through separate HTTP POST requests. Embedded 608/708 captions are supported with H.264 but not HEVC. Do not assume that an FFmpeg WebVTT subtitle rendition in an HLS master playlist will be accepted as a live ingest caption track: YouTube ignores master playlists for this purpose.

FFmpeg options to configure—and what they do not prove

FFmpeg’s HLS muxer documents controls including -hls_segment_type, -hls_time, -hls_list_size, and the HTTP method option -method PUT. Those controls can help shape HLS output, but they do not by themselves establish compatibility with YouTube’s endpoint.

  • Set the segment type to MPEG-TS rather than fMP4.
  • Choose a target segment duration within YouTube’s recommended 1–4 second range, while ensuring no segment exceeds five seconds.
  • Configure a rolling media playlist rather than a master playlist, and ensure the workflow respects the limit on outstanding segments.
  • Encode one supported video stream and one AAC audio stream, with a closed GOP.
  • Use YouTube’s HTTPS ingest URL and the POST or PUT behavior required by the specific endpoint.
  • Do not use byte-range output or HLS encryption; YouTube’s setup guidance disallows byte ranges and encryption other than HTTPS transport.

Do not treat a command copied from a generic FFmpeg example for uploading HLS files to an HTTP server as a validated YouTube command. YouTube’s protocol also specifies segment naming, sequence numbering, playlist updates, request acknowledgements, and handling of outstanding segments. Confirm those details against the current YouTube HLS ingest guide and test your actual encoder and stream URL before relying on the setup. Do not publish a command containing your private ingest URL.

H.264 or HEVC?

Choice When it fits Important trade-off
H.264 Use it when broad encoder compatibility or embedded 608/708 captions matter. YouTube supports it for HLS. Its caption support is broader than HEVC’s for embedded 608/708 captions.
HEVC Consider it when your encoder and workflow support it and you do not need embedded 608/708 captions. YouTube supports HEVC for HLS. YouTube’s API guide notes that HEVC can provide 25%–50% more compression at the same quality than H.264, but this is not a guaranteed bitrate saving for a particular Hindi video.

Common setup failures and checks

  • YouTube receives no segments: Confirm HLS was selected in Live Control Room, the encoder is using YouTube’s generated HTTPS URL, and outbound HTTPS requests are reaching that endpoint.
  • The stream starts and then stalls: Check whether the media playlist is being refreshed for every segment, segment sequence numbers advance correctly, requests are acknowledged, and no more than five segments are outstanding.
  • Segments are rejected or playback is unstable: Verify MPEG-TS output, supported video codec, one AAC track, closed GOP behavior, and segment durations. Keep each segment at or below five seconds.
  • Captions do not appear: Do not rely on a WebVTT rendition in a master playlist as an ingest caption track. Use the documented separate caption POST path, or embedded 608/708 captions with H.264.
  • Audio is missing or rejected: Check that the output contains one AAC track rather than multiple audio tracks or an unsupported codec.
  • Latency or rebuffering is poor: YouTube recommends 1–4 second segments. Shorter segments may lower latency but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency; there is no single best duration for every connection and stream.

Cost and an alternative to managing the encoder

The HLS configuration itself is a software and protocol setup; the cited YouTube guidance does not require a particular hardware model. If you want an uploaded Hindi recording to keep playing as a YouTube live stream without leaving your computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
