Short answer: FFmpeg gives you control, but you must keep the host, media, and network working. A cloud playlist service runs the prerecorded playlist and sends it to YouTube from the provider’s infrastructure, so your own computer can stay off. Choose based on how much control you need versus how much setup and ongoing maintenance you want to take on.
What you are comparing
YouTube is the destination for the live feed, not the playlist host. Whether you use FFmpeg or a hosted service, the stream is delivered to YouTube through its ingest server and stream key. YouTube then transcodes the incoming feed into formats for supported viewer devices. FFmpeg on a host you operate
You prepare the media and configure FFmpeg to send it to YouTube. The host running the process, the media source, and its network connection all need to remain available. You can configure encoding, playlist logic, and automation, but you are also responsible for monitoring and recovering the pipeline when something fails.
A cloud playlist service
You upload or select prerecorded videos, arrange them in a playlist, connect the YouTube destination, and let the service broadcast from its infrastructure. This shifts responsibility for the streaming host away from your home computer, but makes you dependent on the vendor’s service, plan terms, support, and media-handling policies.

Configure YouTube’s ingest settings
For either method, use the server URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents supported video codecs including H.264, H.265, and AV1. Its guidance calls for a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; the listed RTMP/RTMPS profiles use constant bitrate. Match the settings to your encoder and source, and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance before going live.
Test the feed and monitor stream health in Live Control Room rather than assuming a process starting successfully means viewers can watch it. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers connecting an encoder and checking the stream.

Run the stream yourself with FFmpeg
This is the self-managed route: YouTube’s guides specify the ingest connection and encoding recommendations, while FFmpeg’s documentation provides the protocol options. Exact commands depend on your input files, playlist design, FFmpeg build, and chosen output settings, so verify command options against the documentation for the FFmpeg version you install.
- Prepare the media. Check that the files play correctly, use a consistent format where practical, and order them for the broadcast. Decide how the sequence should repeat and how transitions will work; FFmpeg does not choose an editorial playlist for you.
- Prepare a persistent host. Choose a machine or server with enough capacity to read the media and encode or pass through the feed. Keep its operating system, storage, and network available for the entire broadcast. A home PC also depends on home power and internet.
- Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Protect the key and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Match the output to YouTube’s current guidance. Select RTMPS where supported and configure a supported codec, constant bitrate for the applicable profile, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four). Choose resolution and bitrate for the source and your available upload capacity; YouTube’s settings page is the authority for recommended values.
- Start and verify the feed. Run the FFmpeg process, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube receives a healthy signal and that the stream is actually live. Test playlist transitions and audio before relying on an unattended run.
- Supervise failures. Use a process supervisor or your own monitoring to detect a stopped process, host restart, media read error, or lost network path. Restart behavior and playlist position need deliberate handling; do not assume the encoder will recover cleanly on its own.
FFmpeg documents options for persistent HTTP connections and ignoring I/O errors in network output. These may help with particular network-output behaviors, but they are not automatic failover or a promise of continuous operation. Plan for archives and rights
Streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an uninterrupted broadcast longer than that will produce a complete archive. If you need a preserved replay, arrange separate recording or storage, or plan breaks into separate sessions and verify the resulting archive behavior.
Use media you have the right to broadcast
Using FFmpeg or a cloud service does not grant rebroadcast rights. Stream only material you created, own, or have licensed for this use. A provider’s upload or playlist workflow does not make third-party music, video, or game footage permissible by itself.

Check before choosing a cloud service
- What are the storage, upload, playlist-size, runtime, resolution, and concurrent-stream limits?
- How does the service respond if YouTube disconnects or the provider’s stream process stops?
- Does it support scheduling, planned restarts, and segmented broadcasts if you need archives?
- What are the availability commitments, support channels, and response expectations?
- How can you export or delete uploaded media, and what happens to it after cancellation?
- What is the full cost for your planned runtime and number of streams, and how do cancellation terms work?
Service descriptions can establish what a provider says its workflow or plan includes, not independent uptime or comparative reliability. Verify current terms directly before choosing; comparable pricing and service-level evidence are not established here.
