For a simple loop of prerecorded videos, start with FFmpeg if you are comfortable managing a command-line process; choose OBS if you need scenes, overlays, capture sources, or hands-on graphical controls. There is no universal CPU winner: the result depends on your PC, media, settings, and workload. Neither program by itself guarantees a 24/7 stream; you also need a stable upload connection, monitoring, and a recovery plan.

Which is the better fit?

Need Better starting point Why
Looping compatible prerecorded files with minimal production FFmpeg It can send media to a network output and copy compatible encoded streams without decoding and re-encoding.
Scenes, overlays, capture sources, or frequent manual changes OBS Its graphical scene workflow is designed for composing and rendering a production.
A PC near its resource limits Test the actual workload OBS scene rendering uses GPU resources; FFmpeg stream copy can avoid transcoding, but filters and encoding still require compute. No universal performance comparison is established.

This is a workflow recommendation, not a benchmark. No specific PC, operating system, source video, or upload plan is defined, so a particular resolution or indefinite run time cannot be promised.

What each program does to your media

FFmpeg: a configurable media pipeline

FFmpeg documentation describes FFmpeg as a media converter that can read files, network streams, and capture devices, then write files or network outputs. Its stream-copy mode passes compatible encoded streams through without decoding and re-encoding, avoiding that processing step and generation loss. It cannot apply filters in stream-copy mode. Resizing, adding overlays, changing codecs, or otherwise filtering media requires processing; transcoding also increases the workload.

For a basic file-based loop, FFmpeg can be a lean workflow when your files already match YouTube’s accepted input and you do not need visual compositing. It does not provide OBS-style scene controls, and command-line arguments need to be configured and ordered correctly.

OBS: a visual production workflow

OBS lets you arrange sources into scenes and operate them through a graphical interface. That is useful for content that changes between layouts or combines prerecorded media with overlays or capture sources. The trade-off is the work of rendering those scenes: OBS says it needs GPU resources to composite and render, and advises lowering output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes and sources when performance is constrained. Browser sources and filters can add load. This guidance is not evidence that FFmpeg is always lighter. See the OBS performance troubleshooting guide.

Configure YouTube’s incoming stream

Use the settings shown for your stream in YouTube Studio and recheck YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance when configuring: bitrate tables and platform recommendations can change, and different locale renderings have shown different figures.

H.264 reference settings

The currently opened English YouTube encoder guide (accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication date) recommends these H.264 bitrates:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 10 Mbps

The same guide recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported ingestion options; match the codec and settings to the encoder and current YouTube Studio guidance. The figures above are not a guarantee that your PC or connection can sustain them.

Choose bitrate for the real upload connection

The relevant limit is available upload bandwidth, not the advertised download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Other devices sharing the connection can use that headroom, and disruptions can break a stream. Run a speed test, then test the chosen bitrate during realistic network use; if upload varies, lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Set up a local 24/7 workflow

  1. Prepare the media. For FFmpeg, confirm whether the files can be stream-copied to YouTube’s current ingest settings. If they need resizing, overlays, codec changes, or other filters, plan for the added processing. For OBS, add only the sources and scenes you need.
  2. Choose a sustainable output. Start with a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate supported by YouTube and your actual PC and upload link. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval over four seconds, then check the current Studio guidance.
  3. Set up the YouTube stream. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio, use its current ingest address and stream key, and configure the encoder accordingly. YouTube describes the key as part of the credentials that let it accept the feed; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it. Choose RTMPS where available and supported by your encoder.
  4. Test before relying on it. Start with representative audio and motion, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check stream health. Verify that the sound stays present and the picture remains stable over a meaningful test period.
  5. Plan supervision and recovery. Decide how you will detect a stopped process, lost connection, or unhealthy feed, who will respond, and how the stream will be restarted. An encoder alone does not restart after every crash, power cut, or ISP interruption. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend advance setup, preview and stream-health checks, and testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet.

Reduce load on a low-cost PC

  • For FFmpeg, use stream copy only when the file’s streams and format are compatible with the desired output; remove unnecessary filtering or transcoding rather than assuming command-line software requires little compute.
  • For OBS, lower output resolution or frame rate if rendering struggles, simplify scenes, and remove unneeded sources, browser overlays, and filters.
  • Test the actual combination of video, audio, encoder, and settings. CPU and GPU load vary with codec, frame rate, filters, hardware acceleration, build, and source media; a short test on another PC cannot establish performance for yours.
  • Keep the operating system and machine dedicated enough to avoid routine interruptions, and monitor the stream rather than treating a successful start as proof it will stay healthy.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Stream drops or becomes unstable Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuates; competing network use or a disruption may be involved. Check actual upload performance, reduce bitrate to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and retest under normal network conditions.
OBS rendering or encoding struggles Scene composition, resolution, frame rate, sources, filters, or browser sources exceed available resources. Reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify scenes and sources, following the OBS troubleshooting guidance.
FFmpeg output does not match the intended stream Input compatibility, stream selection, argument ordering, or a needed filter/transcode has been overlooked. Review the command and FFmpeg’s documentation; verify the input streams and whether stream copy is appropriate.
YouTube does not accept the feed The ingest address, stream key, codec, or encoder settings may not match the selected Studio stream. Check the current stream settings in YouTube Studio, confirm the key is correct and not exposed, and compare codec and ingest settings with YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
The process or stream stops while unattended Encoder crash, local power loss, or network interruption; the encoder does not guarantee recovery. Check logs and stream health, test a planned failover, and establish an alert and restart path. A UPS may provide optional backup power for a PC or router, but cannot fix an ISP outage; runtime and suitability depend on the equipment.

Account for the India-specific trade-offs

The sources here do not establish Indian PC prices, electricity costs, ISP quality, or local cloud-service pricing, so there is no defensible universal cost winner. A local setup keeps the encoding process on your PC and depends on its power and your home’s upload connection. Compare the electricity and connectivity costs you actually pay with any hosted service’s current terms rather than assuming a low-cost PC is automatically cheaper.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions

A technically stable loop is not permission to use the video, music, or other material in it. Confirm you have the rights needed to stream every element and check YouTube’s current policies for live content and monetization, including its rules on reused content. Encoder choice, stream-copy mode, and cloud playback do not grant rights or guarantee monetization.
