Neither FFmpeg nor OBS is a proven universal winner for CPU use or 24/7 reliability. FFmpeg can suit a fixed, scripted playlist pipeline; OBS is better suited to scene compositing and hands-on production. Actual CPU load depends on the media and encoding path, while continuous operation depends on the entire setup—including the playlist, network, process supervision, and monitoring. Choose by workflow, then test the exact setup you plan to run.

What actually determines CPU use?

The tool’s name alone does not predict processor load. The important factors are whether the video is re-encoded, the codec, resolution and frame rate, any filters or scaling, and whether encoding uses the CPU or compatible hardware. An apples-to-apples comparison needs the same source files, output settings, filters, computer and run duration.

FFmpeg: a configurable media pipeline

FFmpeg is a command-line media framework for reading, filtering and transcoding media. A fixed playlist may fit a relatively lean scripted pipeline, but that does not establish that FFmpeg always uses less CPU than OBS. Stream copying, decoding, filtering, scaling and encoding have different costs; a pipeline that re-encodes or applies filters can have a different footprint from one that does not. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg reference documentation for its processing and output capabilities.

OBS: scene rendering as well as encoding

OBS composites and renders scenes in addition to encoding. Scene complexity and GPU rendering can therefore matter even when encoding is moved off the CPU. OBS says compatible hardware encoders can shift encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; that may reduce CPU encoding load, but it does not eliminate rendering work or guarantee a stable stream. OBS lists NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific qualifications, so verify compatibility with your operating system, GPU and drivers before relying on one. See OBS hardware encoding and OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

There are no comparable official CPU percentages or matched endurance results here. Treat any percentage comparison as setup-specific unless it reports the same media, output, host and test conditions.

Reliability: retries are only one part of the system

OBS reconnect controls

OBS documents automatic reconnect controls, including a maximum retry count and a starting retry wait. The wait doubles with each attempt to avoid overloading the service. OBS also exposes output frame-drop reporting associated with network congestion. These are useful controls, not a guarantee of recovery or evidence that OBS is more reliable than a properly supervised FFmpeg process. Details are in the OBS Studio Output Reference.

FFmpeg needs an operational recovery plan

With FFmpeg, continuity depends on how the command handles the input and output, what happens at playlist exhaustion or on malformed media, and whether an external supervisor restarts the process after an exit. The FFmpeg manuals describe media processing and output capabilities; they do not establish a one-click 24/7 playlist supervisor or an uptime guarantee. Plan for process exits, connection failures, host restarts and power loss rather than assuming an encoder will resolve them by itself.

What both approaches have in common

For either tool, the YouTube connection uses a server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Its setup guidance also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish how a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Which one fits your playlist workflow?

Decision point FFmpeg OBS
CPU and GPU load Depends on the command and whether it copies, decodes, filters, scales or encodes the media. No universal CPU advantage is established. Includes scene compositing and rendering; compatible hardware encoding can shift encoding work off the CPU. No universal CPU advantage is established.
Scenes and live operator controls Designed as a command-line media framework; the cited documentation does not establish OBS-style operator-facing scene controls. Graphical production application for composing scenes and operating a live production.
Playlist and mixed-media handling Depends on the input construction and command; test mixed properties, playlist ends and failures. Test the chosen source and scene setup across playlist transitions and media differences.
Recovery after a disconnect Depends on output behavior and any external process supervisor; no comparative uptime guarantee is established. Documents reconnect retry controls; these do not guarantee recovery.
Monitoring Build checks appropriate to the process and output; the cited manuals do not establish a complete unattended monitoring system. Provides output frame-drop reporting; also monitor YouTube stream health.
Setup and maintenance Requires comfort with command construction and with supervising process and playlist behavior. Offers a graphical workflow, with scene and rendering complexity to manage.

Choose FFmpeg if you want to script a narrow media pipeline and are prepared to handle process supervision and playlist edge cases. Choose OBS if scene composition and graphical operator controls matter, or if its documented reconnect controls suit your workflow. If CPU encoding is the bottleneck in OBS, check whether a compatible hardware encoder is available. Neither choice removes the need to test the actual setup.

Configure and test the YouTube output

  1. Set up the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s encoder setup, obtain the server URL and stream key, and enter them in your chosen encoder. Treat the key like a password. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it for secure transport.
  2. Choose output settings against YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its current guidance gives an example for 1080p at 30 fps: H.264 has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate, while AV1 or H.265 has a 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended bitrate. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU measurements or a universal best setting. Confirm the current table for your chosen format at YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
  3. Make bitrate realistic for your connection. YouTube and OBS troubleshooting guidance recommend matching bitrate to stable upload capacity and checking network and server conditions. A bitrate your connection cannot sustain can cause delivery problems; lowering it can reduce quality and does not fix the underlying connection. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
  4. Test representative content before a long run. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the planned stream. Also test your playlist’s transitions, files with different properties, missing or corrupt entries, audio changes, and expected repeat or end behavior.
  5. Monitor a sustained run. Watch YouTube stream-health messages, dropped frames and encoding overload indicators, and confirm that playback advances through playlist boundaries. Record CPU and GPU use, reconnect events and output quality over the same multi-hour or multi-day period if you are comparing configurations.
  6. Prepare for failure and recovery. Use an operating-system-appropriate process monitor or supervisor, and decide how you will recover from a stopped process, network outage, host restart or power failure. Verify the recovery path rather than assuming a reconnect setting covers every failure.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 playlist

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
CPU is high or encoding overload appears Software encoding, resolution or frame rate, scaling and filters; in OBS, scene rendering can also contribute. Check the encoding path and scene or filter workload. If OBS encoding is CPU-bound, verify whether compatible hardware encoding is available. Change one setting at a time and confirm output quality.
Dropped frames or unstable delivery Upload capacity, network conditions, server connection or software interference. Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity, check the network and server path, and investigate software interference. Reducing bitrate may help if the link cannot sustain it, but it reduces quality and is not a repair for the underlying connection.
The stream disconnects and does not return Reconnect configuration, output connection, process exit or missing process supervision. For OBS, inspect the retry settings and output reporting. For FFmpeg, check the output and error behavior and whether a supervisor restarts an exited process. Confirm recovery with a deliberate test.
Playback stalls, ends or skips at a playlist boundary Playlist construction, exhaustion behavior, malformed or missing media, or differing file properties. Test every entry and transition, including the intended loop or end behavior. Check whether the media process remains alive and whether the next item is actually advancing.
Video continues but audio is absent or changes unexpectedly Source files, playlist transitions or audio configuration. Test audio across each file and transition, and include representative audio in the YouTube test stream.
YouTube reports stream-health problems Encoder settings or delivery conditions. Read the specific health message, verify the selected format against YouTube’s current guidance, and test network stability rather than assuming CPU is the cause.
