For most people who want to loop prerecorded videos into YouTube Live, OBS is easier to set up. Its VLC Video source gives you a visible playlist and a Loop Playlist control. FFmpeg is a better fit if you already work comfortably at the command line or need scripted processing and recovery behavior. That recommendation is an inference from the documented workflows, not the result of a measured usability test.
Choose OBS for a visual playlist; choose FFmpeg for automation
| What matters | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup style | Graphical interface with sources, scenes, and visible playlist controls. | Command-line options and a pipeline that you configure for your inputs and output. |
| Looping files | Media Source repeats one file; VLC Video can play and loop a playlist. | Can be built into an automated pipeline, but the reviewed documentation does not provide an equivalent playlist GUI. |
| Best fit | A creator who wants to select files and confirm the stream visually. | A user who wants scripting, repeatable automation, or custom media processing. |
| What you must maintain | For VLC Video playlists, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. | A working command with suitable inputs, codecs, output settings, and any recovery behavior you need. |
Neither choice guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Test the complete playlist, audio, YouTube preview, and network conditions before relying on a long stream.
Set up a playlist loop in OBS
For one video: use Media Source
- Open OBS and select the scene that should contain the video. OBS places inputs in scenes as sources that make up the stream layout.
- Add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option if you want that file to repeat. Use this for a single recording, not a queue of different files.
- Check the scene preview and audio before connecting to YouTube Live.
For multiple videos: use VLC Video
- Install VLC. The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- In the source properties, create a playlist and add the files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle Playlist is available but defaults off, so leave it off for a fixed sequence.
- Review the preview and listen through the playlist. Check file order, transitions between files, and audio levels before streaming.
The playlist controls make this the more approachable route for GUI-first users, though the VLC installation is an extra dependency.
When FFmpeg is the easier fit
FFmpeg suits users who already know command-line media tools and want to automate or customize processing. Its official documentation shows an example that sends a real-time processed stream to an RTMP server and uses a FIFO muxer to attempt recovery after a temporary network failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That example is a foundation, not a universal playlist-to-YouTube command. The appropriate pipeline depends on your files, codecs, playback order, any transitions, and output settings. Build and test it against your own inputs rather than assuming one command will fit every playlist. If a network interruption matters, configure and test recovery behavior explicitly; the documented example attempts recovery, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Connect either encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live, create or select the stream and get the Live server URL and stream key.
- In OBS or your FFmpeg output configuration, enter the server URL and stream key as the destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure version of RTMP.
- Treat the stream key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share or publish it.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live. To end the event, stop the encoder and end the stream as applicable in YouTube.
Check encoder settings and stream health
- Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Upload capacity: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Allow for other devices and activity using the same connection.
- Preflight: Set up the encoder in advance, test before the event, inspect the preview, check audio and video quality, and monitor stream health while live.
These are YouTube recommendations for the stream, not evidence that either encoder is inherently more reliable.

Problems to check before going live
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable: Check that VLC is installed and that its 32- or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
- Only one file repeats: A Media Source Loop repeats one file. For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Review the playlist order and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off if you want a fixed sequence.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the encoder is sending, then check the Live Control Room again.
- The stream has health or quality issues: Test the connection, check audio and video in preview, and leave the recommended upload headroom. Monitor stream health rather than assuming the local preview reflects the delivered stream.
- FFmpeg stops after a connection problem: Recovery behavior depends on the pipeline and configuration. Test any FIFO-based recovery setup under the conditions you expect instead of treating the documentation example as a universal fix.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home once the cloud stream is running.
- Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot—there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- It automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
