FFmpeg vs. OBS for Rotating Playlists Across YouTube Channels

FFmpeg suits scripted, repeatable file rotation; OBS suits scene-based production and visual control. Both require deliberate channel setup, scheduling, and failure monitoring.

Choose FFmpeg when you want a script to rotate prerecorded files and control the stream output directly. Choose OBS when scenes, overlays, live sources, and visual operator control matter more. Neither tool’s official documentation establishes a one-click built-in workflow for scheduling playlist rotation across several YouTube channels: you still need to configure destinations, manage rotation, and plan monitoring and recovery.

What the comparison comes down to

Need Better starting point What you still need to handle
Repeatable rotation of prerecorded files FFmpeg File order, duration handling, audio consistency, output destinations, restarts, and logs.
Scenes, overlays, live inputs, and visible production controls OBS Studio Playlist switching and channel scheduling; profiles save settings but are not themselves a scheduler.
Several simultaneous channel outputs Depends on the encoding and routing design Per-channel keys, YouTube limits, processing capacity, combined upload capacity, and monitoring.

This is a capability-based recommendation, not a benchmark or hands-on test. FFmpeg is a command-line media framework whose formats documentation covers concatenation and output muxing. OBS is a visual scene-and-source application with profiles for stream, video, and output settings, and separate scene collections. OBS also supports custom streaming servers and stream keys. The official documentation reviewed does not establish whether a specific current OBS plugin can provide multi-channel playlist scheduling, so do not treat the lack of scheduling in a profile as proof that no plugin can do it.

Plan the YouTube destinations first

As described on YouTube’s live streaming limits and eligibility page, a channel can have 10 active streams, and a stream key can be used for 3 active streams; both limits apply. These limits and account rules can change. Live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. While a restriction is active, YouTube says the channel cannot use another channel to live stream.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the intended channel and obtain its current server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.
  2. Keep keys secret. Assign and label the correct key for each destination; do not assume one key can serve an unlimited number of outputs or channels.
  3. Check the current limits and the channel’s eligibility before planning concurrent outputs. Count active streams against both the channel and key limits.

Use the current URL and key shown in Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old command or setup note. For current encoder requirements and recommendations, see YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

When FFmpeg fits a rotating playlist

FFmpeg is a strong starting point when the playlist is file-based and the order and output behavior should be explicit in a repeatable script. Its concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when file-level concatenation is supported by compatible inputs; the concat filter is a different approach. Compatibility and desired transitions matter, so neither method should be assumed to work for every collection of files.

Configuration work to plan

  • Playlist order: Maintain an explicit ordered file list and decide whether it repeats, advances, or changes on a schedule.
  • Durations and transitions: Decide how to handle files of different lengths, gaps, and transitions. A concatenation mechanism alone does not define your programming schedule.
  • Audio and video consistency: Check codecs, frame rates, dimensions, audio layout, and levels across files. Incompatible media may require filtering or re-encoding.
  • Destinations: Configure the correct current RTMPS endpoint and secret key for each intended channel, and stay within YouTube’s concurrent-stream limits.
  • Operations: Plan how the process logs errors, restarts after failure, reports stream health, and alerts a person when automated recovery is not enough.

Do not treat an example command found in a mailing-list post as universally safe or production-ready. The suitable invocation depends on the input files, encoding choices, number of outputs, and failure-handling design.

When OBS fits better

OBS is usually the more natural choice when the broadcast needs scene-based production: for example, a branded scene, overlays, multiple sources, or operator-visible changes. Its profiles can save stream, video, and output settings; scene collections store scenes separately. Those organizational features help keep configurations distinct, but a profile does not schedule channel changes or rotate files by itself.

Configuration work to plan

  • Create and check the scenes and sources needed for the presentation.
  • Set the stream server and key for the intended channel, and verify which profile and scene collection are active before starting.
  • Decide how file rotation and channel changes will be triggered. The official OBS documentation reviewed does not settle whether a particular current plugin can automate this workflow.
  • Define who monitors the session and what they do if a source ends, the stream drops, or the wrong destination is selected.

If you need a continuous, unattended rotation, evaluate the complete scheduling and recovery arrangement—not just whether OBS can play a media source.

Set encoder settings and capacity deliberately

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its video codecs, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its current recommendation is a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds, and constant bitrate encoding. The appropriate bitrate depends on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current bitrate table rather than applying a single figure to every output.

  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval where possible; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate encoding as recommended by YouTube.
  • Resolution, frame rate, and codec: Choose values that suit the source and consult the current YouTube guidance for the corresponding bitrate.
  • Multiple outputs: Account for upload capacity across all concurrent outputs. Each additional output can add network and encoding load. Whether outputs can share an encoded stream depends on the technical setup, so do not assume either that they always need fully separate encodes or that one encode can always be reused.

Test rotation and failure handling before unattended use

YouTube recommends a representative preflight test with audio and motion, followed by monitoring stream health during the event. Test the actual workflow, not just a single successful connection.

  3. Check the encoder’s stream-health status and confirm the expected output appears on the correct channel.
  4. Exercise the planned restart and recovery procedure, including what happens if the process or connection fails.
  5. Confirm that logs and alerts reach someone who can respond; unattended operation still needs an escalation plan.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Using prerecorded video as a live stream does not remove the need to have rights to the video, music, and other material, or to follow YouTube’s rules. Review the rights and permissions for every item in the rotation and consider whether the playlist is sufficiently original and valuable for your channel’s goals. A functioning encoder or a successful test does not establish that a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded playlist that keeps a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to configure first: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live production. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
