To loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live with an NVIDIA GPU, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before the input, pace the file with -re, encode with the locally supported h264_nvenc encoder, and send it to the RTMPS address and stream name shown in YouTube Studio. For H.264, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; choose the bitrate for your output resolution and frame rate, then verify stream health in YouTube Studio.

What the loop and pacing options do

-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the -i it controls. -re reads a prerecorded file at its native rate so FFmpeg does not send the whole file as fast as it can. Looping and pacing solve different problems; for a file-to-live stream, you usually need both. See the FFmpeg command-line manual for option ordering and input behavior.

The example below illustrates the command structure; it has not been run or validated on a particular machine. It assumes the source has a usable video stream and audio stream, and targets 1080p60 H.264. Replace the RTMPS placeholders with the values for your YouTube live stream. If your selected output mode differs, change the bitrate and GOP length accordingly.

Prepare the source and confirm NVENC support

  1. Inspect the file. Use a media-inspection tool such as ffprobe to check its video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, and audio layout. Variable frame rate, unusual timestamps, missing audio, or separate audio can require additional handling.
  2. Check the installed encoder options. Run ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc. The encoder must be available in your FFmpeg build, and the host needs compatible NVIDIA hardware, drivers, and runtime support. Options and preset names vary by build and hardware; use the options your installed encoder actually lists.
  3. Choose an output mode your connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current H.264 table below as a starting point, and check the current YouTube encoder settings before a broadcast because its recommendations can change.

Choose H.264 bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes

YouTube’s Help guidance, accessed in 2026, specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264 bitrates by output size and frame rate. These are recommendations, not guarantees of quality; select a mode that your upload connection can sustain reliably.

Output mode YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Two-second GOP length
2160p60 50 Mbps 120 frames
2160p30 42 Mbps 60 frames
1440p60 34 Mbps 120 frames
1440p30 21 Mbps 60 frames
1080p60 17 Mbps 120 frames
1080p30 14 Mbps 60 frames
720p60 8 Mbps 120 frames
720p30 8 Mbps 60 frames
480p30 4 Mbps 60 frames
360p30 4 Mbps 60 frames

The GOP values in the table are the frame counts corresponding to a two-second interval at the listed frame rate. The command’s -g 120 is therefore for a 60 fps output; use the matching frame count for another frame rate. Make sure the output frame rate you set is appropriate for the content. YouTube’s advanced guidance also lists progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Configure such details only where the installed encoder supports the relevant options, and verify the actual ingest in YouTube Studio.

Example: loop a file to YouTube with H.264 NVENC

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v h264_nvenc -rc cbr -b:v 17M -g 120 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k
  -f flv "<rtmps_ingestion_url>/<stream_name>"

This is an illustrative starting point for a 1080p60 H.264 stream, not a production-validated command. It does not scale or otherwise transform the source to 1080p60; the input and resulting output must match the mode you intend to send. Check your FFmpeg/NVENC options for any additional GOP or pixel-format controls needed by your build. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg with NVIDIA GPU guide (Video Codec SDK 13.1) describes CBR for streaming with strict bandwidth constraints, while cautioning that its examples are general starting points rather than universal settings.

Audio mapping and synchronization

-map 0:a:0? maps the first audio stream if one exists; it does not create audio when the file has none. YouTube’s Live Streaming API identifies missing audio as an ingest health issue. If the source has multiple audio tracks, map the intended track explicitly. If audio is in a separate file, loop and pace that input independently, map the intended video and audio streams, and check synchronization rather than assuming arbitrary files will stay aligned. YouTube’s stereo guidance lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; its 5.1 guidance lists AAC at 384 Kbps.

Set the destination without exposing the key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Copy the ingestion URL and stream name from the configuration for the live stream you are setting up; they are not universal constants. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation explains that some encoders use a combined URL and stream name while others accept them separately. Never publish your real stream key in a command example, screenshot, script repository, or public post. Shell process arguments may be visible to local users, so consider an appropriately protected secret-handling method for your host.

Check YouTube ingest and stream health

  1. Start FFmpeg and confirm that it connects to the configured RTMPS destination without local errors.
  2. Open the live stream’s status and health information in YouTube Studio. A running FFmpeg process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  3. Confirm that the received video and audio codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval match the intended output.
  4. Before making the stream public, test a private broadcast. Check loop boundaries, audio continuity, and whether the content is authorized for use. A video that is technically streamable is not necessarily cleared for broadcast.

YouTube’s API documents ingest diagnostics including missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, excessive GOP duration, open GOP, bitrate problems, and video ingestion starvation. Use the actual health message to narrow down the cause rather than treating FFmpeg’s local output as proof of a successful broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • h264_nvenc is unavailable or fails to initialize: check that the installed FFmpeg build exposes the encoder with ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc, then verify NVIDIA hardware, drivers, and runtime compatibility on that host. The GPU brand alone does not establish that the encoder is usable.
  • The video races ahead instead of behaving like a live feed: make sure -re is before the input. Check that -stream_loop -1 is also before the input it controls.
  • YouTube reports no audio: inspect whether the source has an audio stream. The optional map only maps existing audio; for a source without audio, supply a deliberate audio input and map it correctly.
  • The audio is wrong or out of sync: map the intended track, inspect timestamps and stream layouts, and test the complete loop. Separate video and audio files require independent loop/pacing decisions and synchronization checks.
  • YouTube flags bitrate, codec, or keyframe problems: compare the received stream against the current YouTube settings page, including the output mode’s recommended H.264 bitrate, CBR, codec, and two-second keyframe target. Check that your GOP does not exceed four seconds.
  • FFmpeg runs, but YouTube shows a problem or no healthy ingest: recheck the RTMPS destination and stream name from the correct live configuration, then read YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics for missing streams, unsupported encoding, GOP, bitrate, or ingestion issues.

Understand what NVENC does—and does not—offload

NVENC handles video encoding on supported NVIDIA hardware, but it does not make the whole FFmpeg process cost-free or eliminate CPU use. FFmpeg still reads and demuxes the file and may decode, filter, scale, map audio, and mux the output. Actual throughput depends on the GPU, driver, operating system, FFmpeg build, source, filters, and network. A quality-oriented preset may use more encoder capacity; do not assume that a preset name or option from another FFmpeg/NVENC generation exists on your host.
