For a 720p, 60 fps H.264 stream to YouTube Live, start with 8 Mbps video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. At 60 fps, that interval is 120 frames, so use -g 120. Set stereo AAC audio to 128 Kbps, send the stream over RTMPS where available, and use the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The command below is a starting template—not a tested command—and needs a compatible FFmpeg build and a playlist whose files suit the concat demuxer.
Recommended 720p60 settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these H.264 settings for 720p at 60 fps. The 8 Mbps value is the recommended video bitrate; 3 Mbps is the stated minimum, not a guarantee of acceptable quality or stable delivery on every connection. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance should be checked again if its requirements change.

YouTube also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. These are compatibility guidance for an H.264 SDR encode, not a claim that every listed value is mandatory for every live stream.
Prepare Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and the playlist
Check the FFmpeg build
FFmpeg options and available encoders depend on the version and how the program was built. Check the installed version and confirm that the build includes libx264 before using the example:

ffmpeg -encoders | grep libx264If the encoder is absent, install or build an FFmpeg version with libx264 enabled, or adapt the command to an encoder that is available and compatible with your setup. Consult local option help for your installed build. The FFmpeg documentation index notes that its online documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision; older installations may differ.
Make concat inputs consistent
The concat demuxer is intended for files with matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. A playlist that mixes different stream layouts or encoding characteristics may produce timestamp warnings, bad transitions, or playback problems. Normalize files to common stream properties first, or test the transitions with the actual playlist. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user reply describes the stream-consistency constraint; a separate September 2024 playlist report illustrates errors with a heterogeneous playlist, but does not establish that all mixed playlists fail.
Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one file entry per line. For example:

Get the YouTube ingest address and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to start.
- Copy the server or ingest address and the stream key displayed for that stream. Use RTMPS when the offered destination supports it.
- Keep the key private. Do not paste it into a public script, shared terminal transcript, screenshot, or log. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In the command below, replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS address and key in the format required by the Live Control Room. The destination is account- and stream-specific; do not reuse an example address or another stream’s key.
Starting FFmpeg command for a looping 720p60 playlist
This template reads the concat playlist in real time, loops it indefinitely, scales video to fit within 1280×720 while preserving aspect ratio, pads unused space, and converts output to 60 fps. It assumes the input files can be read by the concat demuxer and that your FFmpeg build includes libx264. Encoding controls beyond the platform’s stated settings are practical template choices; this command has not been verified on every Ubuntu release or FFmpeg build.

If you need a different aspect-ratio treatment, adjust the filter and verify the result.-b:v 8Msets the target video bitrate. Matching-maxrate 8Mand a buffer are common ways to constrain the rate, but YouTube’s guidance is the CBR recommendation; verify the behavior of your encoder and FFmpeg build rather than assuming these flags guarantee identical rate control everywhere.-g 120sets the GOP size to 120 frames, which corresponds to YouTube’s two-second interval at 60 fps. The frame-count conversion follows from the stated interval and frame rate. Do not let the interval exceed four seconds—240 frames at 60 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2selects AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvselects the RTMP-family streaming container used by this template. Replace the placeholder destination with the exact RTMPS destination and key from your Live Control Room.
The source resolution and frame rate may differ from the output because the filter explicitly scales and converts them. If the source is already 720p60 and you do not want scaling or frame-rate conversion, test a version without those filter operations and confirm that the output remains 1280×720 at 60 fps.

Test and monitor before relying on the stream
- Run the command with the real playlist and verify that FFmpeg can open every file and sustain real-time output. Watch the terminal for input errors, timestamp warnings, or output that falls behind.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the stream is being sent. Confirm that the stream is reaching YouTube and that audio and video are present.
- Listen to the audio and inspect scenes with movement, transitions, and the most demanding visual detail in your playlist. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Make sure the available upload speed can sustain the encoded total bitrate with headroom. YouTube advises choosing settings reliable for the connection and testing upload speed. If delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate or improve the connection rather than assuming 8 Mbps will work on every network.
Troubleshooting common failures
FFmpeg reports that the encoder is unknown
The installed build may not include libx264. Check ffmpeg -encoders and use a build with that encoder or adapt the command to an available compatible encoder. Options vary by build.
The playlist fails, glitches at transitions, or prints timestamp warnings
Check that every listed file exists and is readable, then verify that the files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Normalize inconsistent items or test them individually before putting them back in the concat list. The 2024 mailing-list examples are illustrative, not proof that every heterogeneous playlist will fail.

Recheck the Live Control Room’s destination and key, including the RTMPS address and the required formatting. A key for another stream or a mistyped destination will not identify the intended broadcast. Keep credentials out of shared logs when troubleshooting.

Stream health is poor or frames fall behind
Check both the local FFmpeg output and upload stability. The 8 Mbps figure is a video bitrate, so the connection also needs capacity for audio and normal network variation. Try YouTube’s 3 Mbps stated minimum if necessary, or improve the connection; then retest quality and stream health. The title alone cannot determine whether a particular Ubuntu machine can encode this playlist at 720p60 in real time, so test on the target system.
Video is stretched, has bars, or does not look like the source
The scale-and-pad filter preserves aspect ratio and fills the remainder of the 720p frame with padding. That may create bars when the source aspect ratio differs from 16:9. Inspect the output and change the filter only if you accept the resulting crop, bars, or distortion trade-off.
