Naoki Hamaguchi says the challenge of remaking Final Fantasy VII was finding room for new interpretations without losing the identity of the original. In an interview cited by GamesRadar+, the series lead said he did not want the project to feel like his own “personal fan project”—and said the team had not changed the core story in response to reactions.
What Hamaguchi said about remaking FF7
GamesRadar+ reported the remarks from Edge issue 429, attributing them to Hamaguchi, the Final Fantasy series lead. He described the adaptation as a question of stewardship, not simply a chance to make changes to a well-known game:
“It wasn’t easy. I felt it was absolutely essential to avoid turning a masterpiece like FF7 into something that felt like my own personal fan project.”
Hamaguchi’s concern, as reported, was how to reinterpret a work with an established identity while making a remake trilogy that could still be recognized as FF7.

Why the challenge extended beyond individual changes
The reported interview frames the difficulty as maintaining coherence across the trilogy, rather than judging each departure from the 1997 original in isolation. Hamaguchi said:
“The real challenge wasn’t simply incorporating elements that differed from the original or introducing new interpretations. It was constantly asking ourselves whether what we were creating could truly be called FF7R.”

That distinction matters: a remake can change details and still aim to preserve the broader identity of its source. In the same report, Hamaguchi said, “We haven’t altered the core of the story based on reactions at any given time.” His comments describe the team’s stated approach; they do not establish how every individual story decision was made.
What the comments mean for players catching up
GamesRadar+ names the original Final Fantasy VII, Remake and Rebirth as possible catch-up games ahead of the reported next entry, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The report says newcomers can begin with the remakes, but it does not lay out a definitive play order or say that replaying earlier games is required.
