Play Final Fantasy V first if you want to experiment with party roles and combat builds; start with Final Fantasy VI if you’re more drawn to a large cast, individual character stories, and ability customization. That’s a preference-based recommendation, not an objective ranking: the two games emphasize different pleasures.
How do Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI differ?
| If you’re looking for… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible combat roles and build experimentation | Final Fantasy V | Its job system lets characters take on jobs and master them, giving you room to shape how the party fights. Square Enix also describes it as expanding the Active Time Battle system introduced in Final Fantasy IV. Square Enix’s overview of Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI. |
| A broad cast, character stories, and customizable abilities | Final Fantasy VI | Square Enix emphasizes its playable cast, whose members have their own stories, goals, and destinies. Magicite lets you customize party members’ abilities, spells, and summons. Square Enix’s overview of Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI. |
Choose Final Fantasy V for job-system experimentation
Final Fantasy V is the more natural first pick if you enjoy trying different party roles and working out how character jobs fit together. Its defining appeal is the freedom to choose jobs for characters to master, which makes combat customization the clearest reason to begin here.
That recommendation is about what the official feature descriptions emphasize, not a claim that Final Fantasy V is universally better or that it is easier to learn. If the question you most want a game to answer is “What party setup do I want to try?”, V is the better fit.
Choose Final Fantasy VI for its ensemble and magicite customization
Final Fantasy VI is the stronger first choice if you want a sizable playable cast with distinct personal stories. Its magicite system provides a different route to party customization: you can shape members’ abilities, magic spells, and summons rather than making job experimentation the central draw.

What changes in the Pixel Remaster editions?
The Pixel Remasters are based on the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo versions, and Square Enix says the stories have not been changed. The publisher also says the games received balance tweaks and adjustments and an overhauled UI. Some changes or additional content from earlier remakes are not included, so the Pixel Remaster should not be treated as a version containing every feature from every previous release. For the exact question, “Which classic Final Fantasy should you play first?”, decide whether you want to build around combat roles or follow a varied cast: choose Final Fantasy V for its job system, or Final Fantasy VI for its character stories and magicite-based customization. The available official descriptions establish those differences, but they do not establish a universal winner.
