Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as a standalone game that welcomes newcomers, and says playing Remake first is not required for basic understanding. But Rebirth is still the second entry in a three-game project, so newcomers who want the story and character introductions in order will get more from starting with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game in Square Enix’s three-title remake project. Its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, follows the party’s escape from Midgar; Rebirth expands the setting into open zones with exploration, side quests, combat challenges, minigames, and the Queen’s Blood card game. Square Enix’s [official Rebirth page and FAQ](https://ffvii-remake-intergrade.square-enix-games.com/en-us/) call it standalone and say newcomers can play without first finishing Remake. That means it can be approached as its own game, not that it is the first chapter or a complete retelling of the story.
Remake Intergrade is the project’s first game, covering the party’s escape from Midgar, as described on [Square Enix’s official Remake page](https://ffvii-remake-intergrade.square-enix-games.com/en-us/). That context matters if you want character introductions and plot developments to unfold in sequence.
Is Rebirth worth playing if you have never played Final Fantasy VII?
It can be a good starting point if you are comfortable joining a continuing story partway through and your priority is the standalone experience: combat, exploration, party interactions, and variety. Square Enix’s description—“FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike”—is the publisher’s positioning, rather than a guarantee that every newcomer will find every story beat clear.

For a first-time player who values narrative continuity, start with Remake Intergrade. That recommendation is about the order of this project’s chapters, not a claim that Rebirth is impossible to follow alone. Square Enix says the earlier game is not necessary for basic understanding; playing it first simply gives you the opening chapter and more context for the characters.
What works well for newcomers?
Combat and party synergy
Combat is one of Rebirth’s strongest draws. GameSpot’s 2024 review praised its refined combat and party synergy, while The Guardian’s review highlighted compelling battles and character moments. The appeal is strongest if you enjoy an action-oriented system that gives you reasons to coordinate the party, rather than a game focused only on moving the main plot forward.

Character relationships and variety
Party interactions give the adventure texture, and the optional activities offer different ways to spend time between story sequences. Queen’s Blood, side quests, combat challenges, and minigames are not all interchangeable busywork: reviewers noted character-focused moments and enjoyable highlights alongside activities they found less successful. If you like taking detours to spend more time with the cast, the abundance can be part of the pleasure.
A wider setting to explore
Unlike the Midgar-focused first game, Rebirth opens up its setting through broad zones and optional exploration. That shift makes it a better fit for players who want a substantial world to roam and activities beyond the main quest. It also makes the experience less focused than a straight-through story campaign.

What might put newcomers off?
Optional content can interrupt the story
The same abundance that gives Rebirth its variety can slow its narrative momentum. In its February 22, 2024 review, [GameSpot](https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/final-fantasy-7-rebirth-review/1900-6418189/) praised combat but criticized pacing and some open-zone activities. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/games/2024/feb/22/final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-review) likewise praised combat and character vignettes while warning that minigames and side quests can obstruct the story. Those are critical judgments, not a rule that every player will find exploration tedious.
If you prefer a focused main plot, prioritize story quests and skip activities that do not interest you. Some side quests are built around party members and their relationships, so it is worth choosing selectively rather than assuming every detour is filler. If you love optional challenges and varied diversions, the amount of side content may instead be a major part of the appeal.

Pacing depends on what you enjoy
The reviews point to a real trade-off rather than a universal flaw: Rebirth can deliver memorable character scenes and combat, but its shifts between story and activities will suit some players more than others. Readers who want a consistently brisk plot may find the detours frustrating; those who enjoy lingering in a game world may welcome them.

For newcomers asking where to start with the remake titles, the clearest answer is: play Remake Intergrade first if order and context matter to you; go straight to Rebirth if its exploration and combat are the main draw and you are comfortable entering a continuing story at its second chapter.
