Director Naoki Hamaguchi says the contrasting media demos were deliberate: one emphasized the world’s scale and activities, while the Tokyo Game Show demo focused on a linear story segment.
Why did the two demos feel so different?
In an interview with RPG Site published 1 October 2026, director Naoki Hamaguchi said the demos were designed to show different parts of the game. The media demo presented a large world with varied activities and multiple directions for players to pursue. The Tokyo Game Show demo instead highlighted a more linear, story-focused passage.
Hamaguchi said the contrast was intentional: “We really wanted it this way; to show the difference in the scale between Rebirth and Revelation.” The two demonstrations therefore should not be read as evidence that the full game is exclusively an open-world adventure or a linear sequence. They were samples of contrasting modes of play.
How will exploration and story fit together?
Hamaguchi describes a rhythm of story sequences that carry players through the setting, followed by stretches of open-world freedom, broadly comparing the structure with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The interview does not establish how long those stretches are or how frequently the game moves between them.

One intended difference is how access to regions works. Rather than opening them one at a time, Revelation will allow multiple areas to become available together. Hamaguchi says players are meant to move among them: “With Revelation, there are multiple areas that open up all at once, and you’re meant to hop around to each one rather than focus on a specific one, through these segments of the game.”
Can quests take players between regions?
Yes, according to Hamaguchi. He contrasts Revelation with a Rebirth example in which a Grasslands quest begins and concludes in the Grasslands. In Revelation, a quest may start in one region and lead into another. That means the intended geography of a quest can extend beyond the area where the player first encounters it; the interview does not specify how many quests work this way.

How does the game signal that an activity is for later?
Hamaguchi says some activities may be visibly gated by difficulty or party level. These barriers are meant to communicate that the player can return after progressing, rather than suggesting that every available-looking activity is immediately manageable. The interview does not quantify how often such gates appear or identify specific activities.

RPG Site’s 1 October 2026 article says Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on 8 April 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. This is the date and platform lineup reported in that article, not an independently confirmed current store listing.

Hamaguchi also says the studio has separate teams for gameplay and optimization. That describes the development process; the interview provides no platform-specific performance figures, resolutions, hardware requirements, or test results. It also does not establish a price or confirm physical editions.
