Square Enix confirmed that distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks disrupted Final Fantasy XIV beginning May 6, 2024. Players reported disconnections, failed logins and trouble exchanging data with the game’s data centers. The incidents recurred through May 12–13, with the affected regions changing over time. The official notices document service disruption—not a confirmed account hack or theft of player data.
What happened to Final Fantasy XIV?
In a May 6, 2024 Lodestone notice, Square Enix attributed network technical difficulties to a DDoS attack. A distributed denial-of-service attack floods or overloads network access with hostile traffic or connection requests, making a service difficult to reach. It is an availability attack; by itself, it does not show that attackers accessed game systems or stole information.
Square Enix said players could be disconnected from Worlds, have trouble logging in, or experience difficulty accessing data centers and sending or receiving game data. The notice covered data-center Worlds in Japan (JP), North America (NA), Europe (EU) and Oceania (OC). It did not say every player or World was affected equally.

The official notices describe repeated, intermittent incidents rather than one uninterrupted outage. The regional scope varied from one notice to another.

Square Enix also posted notices for the May 7, May 9 and May 12 incidents: May 7, May 9 and May 12. The changing regional scope means a player’s experience depended in part on the data center they were trying to reach; “the servers were down” is too broad to describe every point in the timeline.
Was it a data breach or account hack?
The cited Square Enix notices confirm a DDoS-related availability problem. They do not report compromised accounts, stolen credentials, exposed personal information, malware or a ransomware demand. A DDoS attack and a data breach are different claims: the first concerns whether players can reach a service; the second requires evidence of unauthorized access to or disclosure of data.

The notices also do not identify an attacker or motive. They provide no confirmed attack method, traffic volume or detailed mitigation architecture, so attribution or more specific technical claims would go beyond what Square Enix disclosed in these notices.

Square Enix said it was investigating the attacks, taking countermeasures and monitoring the situation. It also said it was working with internet service providers on additional countermeasures. The official notices do not specify the filtering technology or other technical details used.

What should players do if they cannot log in?
During an acknowledged service incident, repeated local changes are unlikely to restore access to infrastructure under attack. Check official information first, then troubleshoot locally only if the service appears to be available.
- Check Lodestone news and the official World Status page for a service notice or affected data center.
- If Square Enix has acknowledged a DDoS incident, wait for an update rather than repeatedly restarting or reinstalling the client. VPNs, DNS changes and port forwarding are not established fixes for a service-side attack.
- If there is no relevant service notice, check that your launcher and platform network are working normally, and note whether the problem affects one data center or several.
- If official updates indicate service has recovered but you still cannot access your account, contact Square Enix Support through its official support channels.
There is no indication in the cited notices that this particular incident involved phishing, but standard account-safety habits still apply: do not follow suspicious “server status” links or download unofficial tools, and never give your login credentials to someone claiming they can restore access.
