The message “An error occurred while starting Roblox” is a generic launch failure, not one specific bug. The most reliable fix is to confirm that your PC meets Roblox’s current requirements, update Windows, try the other official Roblox app, and then perform a clean reinstall. If you are still using Windows 7 or Windows 8, note that Roblox’s current PC requirements support 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 only; compatibility mode and unofficial legacy installers are not dependable solutions.
Use the symptom that best matches your problem, then work through the fixes from safest to most advanced.
What the Roblox startup error means
Roblox uses this message for several different failures, including damaged client files, a blocked executable or DLL, missing Windows components, an incomplete installation, graphics incompatibility, and unsupported Windows versions.

Roblox separates desktop launch problems from connection problems. If the client starts normally and only joining an experience fails, skip to the connection troubleshooting section.

Before troubleshooting: check Windows support
Open Settings → System → About and record your Windows edition, version, and System type. Roblox’s current PC requirements specify:
- 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
- DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support
- A supported desktop browser when launching from the Roblox website
Windows 7 and Windows 8 are not listed as supported PC operating systems. Do not rely on compatibility mode, cracked launchers, or third-party download mirrors. Upgrade to a supported Windows version instead.
Windows 10 may still run Roblox when it meets Roblox’s requirements, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 11 is the preferable upgrade when your hardware supports it.
Quick fixes first
1. Restart Windows
Restart the PC before reinstalling anything. A restart can clear a stuck Roblox process or an incomplete update state. Roblox also recommends rebooting as an early step for general desktop problems.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End any process named Roblox, Roblox Player, Roblox Game Client, or similar.
- Try launching Roblox again.
This is particularly useful if Roblox appears in Task Manager but its window immediately disappears. It is a practical cleanup step, not a guaranteed fix.
3. Install Windows updates
Pending Windows updates can leave system libraries or drivers in an inconsistent state.

- Windows 11: Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- Windows 10: Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.
Install available updates, restart, and test Roblox again.
Try the other official Roblox app
Windows users may launch Roblox through the desktop installer from the Roblox website or through the official Microsoft Store app. If one version fails, try the other. Roblox specifically recommends switching distributions for some library and startup failures.
- If both versions fail, investigate Windows, security software, graphics support, or the operating system.
- If only the Store app fails, repair or reset the Store app.
- If only the desktop version fails, clear its local files and reinstall it.
Install Roblox only from the official Roblox website or the official Microsoft Store listing. Do not install unofficial launchers.
Repair or reset the Microsoft Store version
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Roblox and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset.
Resetting the app can remove its local app data. It does not delete your Roblox account or cloud-saved game progress.
Perform a clean Roblox reinstall
Uninstalling and reinstalling over damaged local files may reproduce the same error. A clean reinstall removes the remaining Roblox client folder first.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select Roblox and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Press Win + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the Roblox folder.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reinstall Roblox from the official website or Microsoft Store.
Roblox’s Failed to Load Library guidance recommends clearing the local Roblox folder for relevant installation and library failures. Removing it deletes local client data and cache, not your account.

If you launch from a browser, clear temporary browser data and test a current version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. Disable browser extensions temporarily, especially ad blockers, to check whether the browser handoff is being blocked.
Check antivirus and Windows Firewall
Antivirus software can quarantine a Roblox executable or DLL, while firewall rules can block the client. Roblox documents these as possible causes of desktop and connection problems.
- Open Windows Security or your installed antivirus program.
- Check Protection history, quarantine, blocked applications, and security logs.
- If a Roblox file was incorrectly quarantined, restore it only when Roblox came from an official source.
- Update the security product.
- Use its supported controls to allow Roblox through the firewall or add a narrow exception for the Roblox folder.
The usual local folder is:
C:UsersYourWindowsUsernameAppDataLocalRobloxDo not permanently disable antivirus or Windows Firewall. A temporary disablement, if used at all, should only isolate the cause and protection should be re-enabled immediately. Updating the security product and using a narrow permitted-program exception is safer.
On a work, school, or family-managed PC, endpoint security and group policies may be controlled by an administrator. Do not attempt to bypass them; ask the administrator to allow Roblox.
Fix DLL and “Failed to Load Library” errors
Record the exact DLL name before changing anything. A missing MFPlat.dll, for example, can indicate missing media components or a Windows N/KN edition. Other DLL errors may result from Windows corruption, antivirus quarantine, or an incomplete Roblox installation.
Never download individual DLL files from random websites. First repair Windows using Microsoft’s recommended DISM-then-SFC sequence.

Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow- Wait until verification reaches 100%.
- Restart Windows and test Roblox.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.
Typical SFC results mean:
- No integrity violations: Windows found no protected system-file corruption.
- Corrupt files repaired: Restart and test Roblox.
- Some files could not be repaired: Repeat the repair process and follow Microsoft’s advanced recovery guidance.
If DISM cannot find repair files, Microsoft documents an advanced source-based command:

Install Media Feature Pack only on Windows N or KN
Do not install the Media Feature Pack on every Windows PC. It is relevant to Windows N or KN editions, particularly when the error names a missing media component.
For Windows 11 N:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Optional features.
- Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Install it and restart Windows.
For Windows 10 N:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Install Media Feature Pack and restart.

- Press Win + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Open the display information.
- Check whether Feature Levels includes 10_0 or higher.
If the hardware does not provide feature level 10 or above, a reinstall cannot fix the limitation. Update the graphics driver through NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or your computer manufacturer. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities.
If Roblox opens but games will not load
If the Roblox client starts successfully, the issue is probably not a startup failure. Roblox lists firewall restrictions, unstable Wi-Fi, browser security settings, ad-blocking extensions, router restrictions, and individual experience problems as possible causes.
- Try another supported browser.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions for testing.
- Test a different network or a wired connection.
- Check firewall permissions.
- See whether only one experience is affected.
Roblox documents UDP ports 49152–65535 for connection troubleshooting, but ordinary home users should not broadly expose this range as a first-line fix. Avoid router port forwarding unless a network administrator has identified a specific requirement.
Test a separate Windows user account
As an advanced diagnostic, create a separate local Windows account and test Roblox there.
- Works in the new account: The original profile may have damaged permissions, local app data, or policy settings.
- Fails in both accounts: The cause is more likely system-wide, hardware-related, security-related, or an unsupported operating system.
A new account is a diagnostic, not automatically a permanent solution. If it works, migrate files and settings carefully rather than deleting the original profile immediately.
Use Windows recovery only as a last resort
Do not reset Windows for an ordinary Roblox error. Consider System Restore, an in-place repair, or Reset this PC only when multiple unrelated applications fail, DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, or Microsoft or Roblox Support recommends recovery.
Before resetting, back up important files and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Microsoft warns that reset options can remove applications, settings, and potentially personal files. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
When to contact Roblox Support
Contact Roblox Support if the supported OS, clean reinstall, security checks, Windows repairs, and graphics checks do not resolve the problem. Include:
