Check MediaPackage ingest and manifest freshness for the former; check YouTube Live Control Room stream health for the latter. A healthy status in one service does not establish that the other path is working.
Why is my YouTube live stream not playing?
There is no single fix for an unspecified playback error. MediaPackage and YouTube have separate roles: MediaPackage receives upstream live content and packages it for a configured playback endpoint; YouTube’s encoder destination is its Stream URL plus stream key. Start with the exact URL the viewer opens—not the encoder settings you suspect.
Identify the destination before changing settings
- Record the full URL the viewer opens. Classify it as a MediaPackage playback endpoint, a CDN URL in front of MediaPackage, or a YouTube watch page.
- Separately record which encoder output is in use and where it sends the stream. Never share a YouTube stream key publicly; redact it from screenshots, tickets, and logs.
- For each failed attempt, note the timestamp and time zone, the exact error text, HTTP status if available, and whether the failure affects all viewers or only some.
In India, include the relevant AWS Region, CDN distribution or edge evidence, viewer ISP, and affected timestamps when escalating. “In India” alone does not identify a cause: the information available here does not establish an India-specific AWS Region, ISP, route, or latency problem.

Why does my MediaPackage playback URL return an error?
Check whether MediaPackage is receiving new input segments and whether the output manifest is advancing. An encoder process that appears to be running is not proof that MediaPackage is receiving supported, continuous input.

Check for stale or incomplete output
- Stale manifest: AWS describes this condition when ingest has stopped and the output manifest no longer updates. Compare manifest contents and timestamps across more than one request to see whether segment references advance.
- Incomplete manifest: AWS describes gaps in the segment timeline as a cause of incomplete output. Inspect the referenced segments and their sequence for missing intervals.
- Deliberate error response: If force-error handling is configured on the endpoint, determine whether it is deliberately returning HTTP 404 for a stale or incomplete condition. Do not treat that configured signal as interchangeable with an unexplained player failure.
Confirm that the input is supported
Compare the actual input type and codecs with AWS Elemental MediaPackage’s current support documentation. For HLS inputs, AWS lists requirements including HTTPS/WebDAV with digest authentication, unencrypted media segments, and a required video track. Check the configured input against those constraints rather than assuming a healthy-looking encoder output is acceptable to the endpoint.
How do I check the manifest, segments, and CDN?
Capture requests from an affected playback session rather than relying on a player message alone. Keep the request URL, response, and timestamp for the manifest and representative media segments; compare direct-origin and CDN requests when both are available.

- Request the manifest and record its HTTP status, response body, and timestamp. Check that it contains the expected variants, audio, and current segment references.
- Request representative referenced segments. Record their status and compare their availability with the manifest’s references.
- Repeat the manifest request after a short interval. Determine whether it advances and whether the change is visible at the origin, CDN, or both.
- Compare the same playback path through the origin and CDN, if you can test both safely. An origin success with a CDN failure points investigation toward delivery or caching; it does not, by itself, prove the exact CDN cause.
- Inspect query strings and CDN forwarding/cache-key behavior. AWS documents HTTP 400 responses for malformed, repeated, or invalid manifest-filter parameters, and for query parameters on HLS/CMAF bitrate manifests or segment requests. Remove unsupported parameters where appropriate and retest.
AWS’s CDN guidance says manifest-related query strings may need to be included in the cache key. It also recommends a response timeout of at least three times the LL-HLS part duration for blocking requests. Apply that timeout guidance only if the endpoint and delivery path actually use the relevant HLS or LL-HLS behavior.
Is YouTube ingest working while MediaPackage playback is broken?
It can be; a healthy YouTube ingest status only describes YouTube’s ingest path. If viewers are watching a YouTube page, inspect the stream-health messages and real-time metrics in YouTube Live Control Room and compare them with the encoder’s status. If viewers are opening a MediaPackage URL, YouTube’s stream-health status does not diagnose that endpoint.

If the encoder sends RTMP or RTMPS to YouTube
Use YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance for that output. Its published recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the value for the actual format rather than applying one number to every stream. These are YouTube ingest settings; they do not repair a stale MediaPackage manifest or a failing CDN request.
If the encoder sends HLS to YouTube
Do not substitute the RTMP/RTMPS settings for YouTube’s HLS requirements. YouTube specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. YouTube also states that its Ultra low-latency option is off when HLS is selected.

Separate delivery errors from content or policy issues
If YouTube shows a specific stream-health message, follow that message and inspect the encoder output. Check rights to the material and the applicable YouTube content rules separately; an HTTP or manifest failure alone does not establish a copyright or reused-content issue. - Record encoder status and the output protocol used for each destination.
- Track whether MediaPackage is receiving new segments and whether its playback manifest is current.
- Retain representative origin and CDN manifest/segment statuses with timestamps.
- Record YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages when YouTube is a viewer destination.
- When viewers report a failure, capture the exact URL type, timestamp, error, and affected network or ISP where known.
This record helps distinguish an encoder interruption from an origin, CDN, player, or YouTube ingest problem without assuming that one service’s green status proves the entire chain.
When should I reset a MediaPackage channel?
For a MediaPackage v2 channel with stale or problematic ingested content, AWS documents a channel reset to remove previously ingested content. Use it as a recovery step after preserving the request, ingest, and configuration evidence, not as a replacement for finding a recurring encoder or network fault.
- Stop the encoder feeding the channel.
- Reset the MediaPackage v2 channel.
- Wait at least 30 seconds after the reset.
- Restart the encoder and verify that new input segments arrive and the playback manifest advances.
