“Battle.net not working” can mean a launcher that never appears, a blank window, an endless update, a failed login, or a single game that will not start. The safest order is to check Blizzard’s service status, terminate every Battle.net process, reset the launcher’s cached data, check security and network blocks, and only then reinstall the app. These steps are for Windows 11 and Windows 10 and are designed to avoid deleting large game installations.
For the quickest high-value attempt: end Battle.net and Agent processes in Task Manager, restart Windows, then delete C:ProgramDataBattle.net. Blizzard documents this cache reset at its Battle.net troubleshooting page. The app may forget where games are installed afterward, but you can restore them with Locate the game.
Identify the failure before changing anything

1. Check for a Blizzard outage or maintenance
Before repairing Windows, check Blizzard’s official customer-support channels and regional service-status communications. A widespread outage or scheduled maintenance cannot be fixed by deleting local files. Blizzard specifically recommends checking maintenance and regional service issues when downloads or patches fail (support article).
Do not assume an outage from one failed login: if the launcher never creates a window, the cause is usually local rather than internet-related.

2. Close every Blizzard process and restart Windows
- Exit Battle.net if it is visible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End tasks named Battle.net, Blizzard Battle.net, Agent, and any affected Blizzard game.
- Restart Windows and try the launcher again.
Battle.net can remain running invisibly; deleting its data while Agent is active may simply recreate the corrupted files. Blizzard gives the same close-process instruction before its cache reset (official guidance).
3. Install Windows, driver, and security updates
Install pending Windows updates and current graphics, network, and motherboard/chipset drivers. Use your laptop or component manufacturer’s official site—never a random “driver updater.” Graphics updates matter most for black windows and game launch failures; they are less likely to fix an installer that never starts. Blizzard lists operating-system and driver updates among compatibility steps for launcher and Agent failures (Blizzard support).
4. Reset Battle.net’s cached data
Delete the standard Battle.net folder
- Close all Blizzard processes as described above.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
C:ProgramDataand press Enter. - Delete the Battle.net folder only.
- Restart Battle.net and allow it to rebuild its files.
This removes launcher metadata and cache, not the game folders themselves. However, the app can forget installed-game locations and show Install. Select Locate the game and choose the existing game folder rather than downloading it again. Blizzard documents both the reset and this warning at us.support.blizzard.com/en/article/34719.

Reset Tools data for Agent or patch errors
For messages about missing required files, Update Agent failures, or an update loop, Blizzard also recommends rebuilding the Battle.net Tools folder. Its exact location varies by installation, so search within Blizzard’s data folders for a folder named Battle.net Tools instead of deleting unrelated directories. 5. Check antivirus, firewall, and Windows permissions
Allow Blizzard components without weakening protection
Add the Battle.net launcher, Blizzard Update Agent, and relevant game executables to your security product’s allow-list. Windows Firewall allows individual applications through its rules; use that rather than disabling the firewall globally. Third-party suites can block login modules, patch files, or the Agent. Blizzard recommends checking exceptions for these failures (support guidance; network and permissions guidance).
If you must test whether antivirus is responsible, pause protection briefly, launch Battle.net once, and immediately re-enable it. Do not leave security software disabled or buy a “PC repair” utility.
Test administrator permissions once
- Right-click the Battle.net shortcut.
- Choose Run as administrator for one test.
- If it works, investigate folder permissions, Controlled Folder Access, and the Windows account instead of making elevation permanent.
Permanent elevation can create ownership inconsistencies in game folders. Blizzard treats administrator-account testing as a diagnostic step (source).
Try a separate Windows administrator account
Only after simpler fixes fail, create a temporary administrator account and test there. Success indicates a damaged or restricted Windows profile; it does not mean you must migrate permanently.

6. Check required Windows services
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Secondary Logon.
- Make sure it is not disabled; start it if necessary.
- Restart Battle.net.
Blizzard identifies Secondary Logon as a Battle.net desktop-app dependency in its support search (Blizzard reference). Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) can also be involved in particular Agent errors. Do not reset the WMI repository casually; use Blizzard’s advanced instructions only when your exact error calls for them (WMI guidance).
7. Repair connection and network failures
- Restart the modem or router, then restart Windows.
- Use Ethernet temporarily if possible.
- Test a phone hotspot or another network. If that works, the original network is filtering or misrouting Blizzard traffic.
- Disable VPN and proxy software temporarily.
- Check firewall, router restrictions, and security filtering.
Blizzard’s connection guidance recommends power-cycling networking equipment and using a direct connection where possible (Blizzard network optimization; connection troubleshooting).
Optional Command Prompt reset
Use this only for connection, DNS, or socket symptoms. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run each command, and restart Windows afterward:

These commands cannot fix a Blizzard outage, account problem, corrupted launcher, or a corporate network that blocks required traffic. Persistent failures can also come from incorrect Windows hosts entries, leftover proxy settings, or school, hotel, work, and public-network filtering. 8. Check disk space and write access
Check free space on both the Windows drive and the game-installation drive. Patches may need temporary and decrypted space beyond the final download size. Also check that the game drive is connected and healthy, the folder is writable, and Controlled Folder Access or ransomware protection is not blocking Battle.net. Blizzard documents hard-drive write and low-space decryption failures (support article; support article). Do not assume a fixed free-space number: requirements vary by game and version.

If Battle.net opens but one title fails, use that game’s menu and choose Scan and Repair where available. Confirm the correct game version and installation folder before considering a launcher reinstall. World of Warcraft and its versions are installed through Battle.net; when an existing installation appears as Install, Blizzard directs users to Locate the game (installation guidance).
Game files, graphics requirements, permissions, and game-specific outages can fail independently of the launcher. Do not delete a game folder until repair and locate options are exhausted.
10. Reinstall Battle.net without redownloading games
- Write down every Blizzard game folder and its drive letter.
- Close Battle.net, Agent, and game processes in Task Manager.
- Uninstall the Battle.net desktop app from Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer only from Blizzard’s official page: download.battle.net/en-us/desktop.
- Install it, sign in to the correct account, and choose Locate the game for existing installations.
Do not delete game folders as part of a launcher reinstall. Blizzard distinguishes game removal from app removal and notes that supported player data is stored on its servers, but local saves, screenshots, add-ons, and settings can have separate storage (Blizzard’s uninstall guidance). If the installer itself fails, Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 desktop-program troubleshooter covers blocked installation and removal (Microsoft support). Compatibility mode should be reserved for an installer-specific compatibility failure, not used as a general launcher fix.

11. Advanced cases and exact error codes
For Update Agent errors, use Blizzard’s Tools-folder and WMI instructions only for the matching error. Avoid registry cleaners and unverified commands that delete Schannel, WMI, or Battle.net keys. If a Windows upgrade broke an older installer, Microsoft’s compatibility guidance is available at Microsoft Support.
When contacting Blizzard, provide the full code (for example, BLZBNTBNA00000006), whether a window appears, whether processes remain in Task Manager, Windows edition and build, recent driver/security/VPN updates, the affected game, installation drive, free space, and whether another network works. Blizzard’s launcher support materials include LogGoblin instructions for collecting logs (log and launcher support).
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the Battle.net folder delete my games?
Deleting the launcher data folder normally leaves game folders intact, but Battle.net may forget their locations. Use Locate the game to select each existing installation.

Prefer an allow-list exception. If you briefly pause protection for diagnosis, re-enable it immediately and do not use the launcher unprotected as a permanent fix.
Does changing DNS fix Battle.net?
It can help a name-resolution failure, but it will not repair corrupted files, an outage, an account problem, or a blocked network. Try the network reset steps first.
Why does Battle.net work on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi?
The Wi-Fi network, router, proxy, DNS service, or corporate/public filtering is likely blocking or misrouting Blizzard traffic. Check those controls or contact the network administrator.
Is the problem Battle.net or the game?
If the launcher opens and only one title fails, use that game’s Scan and Repair and verify its location. A launcher that never opens points to local launcher files, services, permissions, or security software.
