If Epic Games Launcher does nothing, opens and immediately closes, shows a blank window, or will not sign in, start with the safest fixes: check Epic’s service status, fully exit the launcher, restart your computer, and clear its web cache. Reinstalling should be the last resort: Epic’s documented reinstall process warns that it removes installed titles.
Before troubleshooting: check what is failing
“Epic Games Launcher is not working” can describe several different problems:
- No window appears after clicking the shortcut.
- The launcher briefly appears and then closes.
- A blank, black, or frozen window appears.
- The launcher opens but will not sign in, update, or download.
- The launcher works, but one game will not start.
- An error code such as LS-0026 appears.
If Epic’s services are degraded on its official status page, local repairs will not fix the outage. Wait for the incident to clear before deleting files or reinstalling.

1. Fully exit Epic Games Launcher and restart
On Windows, open the notification area beside the clock. Click the hidden-icons arrow if necessary, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit. Then restart Windows.

If the icon is missing but Epic remains stuck, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Epic Games Launcher or another Epic-related process, choose End task, and try again.
On macOS, quit the launcher. If it will not quit, open Activity Monitor, search for Epic Games Launcher processes, select them, and click the stop button.
2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Cached data may be stale or damaged, particularly when the launcher is blank, frozen, or stuck loading. Clearing the documented cache folders should not remove your installed games or Epic account. Exit the launcher completely first.

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete these folders if present:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Start the launcher again; it will rebuild the cache.
Epic notes that you may see only one or two of these folders. Do not delete the entire EpicGamesLauncher directory for this step. See Epic’s cache instructions.

macOS
- Open Finder and choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash. - Empty the Trash and reopen Epic Games Launcher.
3. Try administrator mode on Windows
Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and choose Run as administrator. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
This is a diagnostic test for permission problems that can prevent updates, file access, or game launches. It will not fix an Epic outage, an unsupported operating system, or a damaged installation, and it does not mean you must permanently run the launcher as administrator.
4. Check updates and system requirements
Install pending updates for the launcher, Windows or macOS, and your graphics driver. Epic currently lists support for 64-bit Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS 13.5 or later. Beta versions of macOS are not supported. Epic’s listed Windows minimums also include 4 GB of memory, 3 GB of storage, and a DirectX 9.0c-compatible GPU. Requirements can change, so check Epic’s current requirements.

- Exit the launcher.
- Locate its executable, right-click it, and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for, then select the latest available Windows version.
- Click Apply, then OK, and relaunch.
On Mac, confirm that the specific model can run macOS 13.5 or later before upgrading. If it cannot, reinstalling the same launcher may not solve the compatibility problem. Epic’s macOS guidance covers older unsupported releases.
5. Update the graphics driver
A graphics-driver problem is more likely when the launcher crashes during rendering, displays a black or blank window, or games fail immediately after the launcher opens. Download drivers only from the manufacturer:
Avoid generic third-party driver-updater tools; they are unnecessary for this troubleshooting step and can install incorrect software.

Temporarily close game overlays, recording or streaming software, hardware-monitoring utilities, VPNs, proxies, and other game clients. Aggressive antivirus or endpoint-security software can also interfere, but treat that as a possibility rather than a diagnosis.

If you test by briefly pausing security protection, re-enable it immediately afterward. Prefer adding a proper exception or contacting the security vendor rather than leaving protection disabled.
For sign-in, update, or download problems, also verify your internet connection and system clock. Test without a VPN or proxy. Restart the router only if other network services are failing too. Do not change DNS, open ports, or disable the firewall without a specific error that justifies doing so.

If the launcher remains broken after cache clearing, updates, and permission checks, Epic’s reinstall guidance includes checking Windows system files:
- Close Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart Windows.
sfc /scannow repairs or reports damaged Windows system files; it is not an Epic-specific command and is not guaranteed to fix the launcher.

8. If only one game will not start
If the launcher opens normally but a game fails, repair the game rather than the launcher first. Check the game’s exact error code and use Epic’s Verify option for that title. Epic’s guidance for LS-0026 includes file verification, cache clearing, administrator mode, and checking background applications.
Back up local saves before reinstalling a game. Cloud saves depend on the individual title and may not cover every local save.
9. Reinstall only as a last resort
Important: Epic’s documented reinstall process warns that installed titles are removed. Before uninstalling, check whether you can redownload the games, have enough storage and bandwidth, and have backed up local saves. Do not assume installed games will always be detected automatically afterward.

- Exit Epic from the system tray.
- Run
sfc /scannowin an elevated Command Prompt and restart Windows. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Add or Remove Programs).
- Select Epic Games Launcher and choose Uninstall.
- Download the installer from Epic’s official website and install it again.
Follow Epic’s complete reinstall guidance if the normal uninstall does not resolve the problem.
macOS
- Quit the launcher and confirm in Activity Monitor that no Epic processes remain.
- Move Epic Games Launcher from Applications to the Trash.
- Only if following Epic’s advanced cleanup instructions, check Epic-related folders under
~/Library/Application Support,~/Library/Caches,~/Library/Preferences,~/Library/Logs, and~/Library/Cookies. - Download the latest installer from Epic.
Do not delete unrelated folders. The Mac cleanup can remove application data, so use Epic’s official instructions.

Contact Epic Games Player Support with:
- Your operating system and exact version.
- Whether the launcher is absent, frozen, blank, crashing, or showing an error.
- The exact error code or message.
- When the issue began and whether it followed an OS, driver, or launcher update.
- Whether Epic’s status page showed an incident.
- Which steps you already tried.
Repeatedly reinstalling without identifying the failure pattern can waste time and remove installed titles. If the evidence points to hardware, operating-system, or security software, the relevant manufacturer or vendor may also need to help.
