Start by identifying which layer failed: the FFmpeg process, its RTMP/RTMPS output, YouTube ingest, the VPS itself, or the network path between them. A disconnect on an OVHcloud VPS does not by itself show that OVHcloud caused it. Preserve the logs and YouTube stream-health messages, then test one change at a time.
Identify what actually disconnected
Before changing FFmpeg flags or blaming the provider, capture the evidence around one failure. The same symptom—YouTube stopping—can result from an FFmpeg exit, a failed output write, unhealthy ingest, or a live process that has lost its route to YouTube.
- Save the complete FFmpeg startup banner, including version and build configuration.
- Save the full command with the stream key and other credentials removed. Do not put a live key in a public log, screenshot, or support post.
- Keep FFmpeg output from before and after the failure, exact timestamps, and whether the process exited, printed a connection/write error, stayed alive, or reconnected.
- Record the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health status or message at the same time.
These observations help separate an application failure from an ingest or network interruption. They do not, on their own, establish which party caused it.
Check the YouTube event and encoder settings
Confirm that the publishing command uses the stream key and ingest endpoint for the active YouTube event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, testing before an event, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Codec and recommended bitrate depend on resolution and frame rate; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current guidance.

For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement of your VPS’s usable outbound bandwidth. Verify that the VPS can sustain the chosen bitrate with overhead rather than assuming capacity from a plan name.
Compare settings against the actual output
- Check resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against the active event’s intended configuration.
- Check the destination protocol and endpoint. RTMPS encrypts the stream to Google’s servers and is YouTube’s recommended option.
- Run a controlled test and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback while FFmpeg is publishing.
Understand the FFmpeg options before adding retries
FFmpeg documents RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP. Its RTMP protocol options include tcp_keepalive, which enables the operating system’s basic TCP keepalive mechanism, and rw_timeout, a maximum wait for network read/write operations in microseconds. Keepalive can help detect dead peers or maintain a long-lived idle connection; platform-specific tuning remains at OS defaults. A timeout can make stalled I/O behavior more diagnosable. Neither option repairs a broken route, overloaded VPS, invalid key, or server-side termination. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and check the options supported by your installed build.

Do not confuse HTTP input reconnect flags with RTMP publishing recovery
Options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error are documented in FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol context. Adding them to an RTMP publishing command is not a documented universal fix for an output disconnect.
Evaluate FIFO recovery as a separate output strategy
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can buffer output and attempt recovery from temporary failures. A development-list example uses -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, -recovery_wait_time 1, and -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 with an RTMP destination. Treat that pattern as something to validate—not a guarantee of seamless recovery. Check that your build supports the options, then test buffering, recovery delay, dropped packets, timestamp continuity, and YouTube’s handling in a controlled stream. Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

Check the VPS and network path with measurements
The available information does not identify an OVHcloud plan, region, firewall configuration, route trace, host measurements, or incident record. It therefore cannot establish an OVHcloud fault. Check the specific VPS and route rather than attributing the disconnect to the provider by default.
- Review CPU and memory pressure around the failure, plus any process restarts or out-of-memory events.
- Check whether the input file or disk activity stalled before FFmpeg stopped writing.
- Inspect outbound firewall rules and connection stability to the configured YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Compare disconnect timestamps with host or provider events, if you have records for the actual plan and region.
- Measure sustained outbound capacity against the stream’s bitrate plus overhead.
Keep the time window consistent across FFmpeg logs, YouTube health feedback, system metrics, firewall records, and any provider status information. Without correlated evidence, the cause may remain unresolved.

Test changes without masking the cause
For RTMP versus RTMPS or a different output-recovery configuration, change one variable at a time. Keep the exact FFmpeg build and redacted command with each test, and compare connection stability over the same duration, recovery time, dropped or lost media, timestamp and audio/video continuity, CPU and network use, and YouTube stream-health messages. The documented guidance does not provide comparative test results for your VPS or route.
