First find out which connection is failing: FFmpeg reading the tour source, FFmpeg publishing to YouTube, or the FFmpeg process itself. These are different failure modes, and HTTP input reconnect options are not a universal fix for a dropped RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. A safe, version-specific command cannot be prescribed without your FFmpeg version, full redacted command, complete error, and source protocol.
Capture the failure before changing flags
Save the evidence from the failure so you can identify the broken link instead of adding options at random. Redact the YouTube stream key anywhere it appears: it is a credential that can let someone publish to your stream.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version, including build configuration. - Your complete FFmpeg command with keys, tokens, and other secrets replaced by placeholders.
- The full log excerpt beginning before the first error and continuing through the point where FFmpeg stops or recovers.
- The input source type and protocol, such as an HTTP URL, local file, or camera/capture device.
- Whether the input read or YouTube output failed first, and whether the FFmpeg process remained alive.
- YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message at the same time, if available.
FFmpeg documents protocol-specific controls, but the error and the command determine which options apply. A title or one-line timeout message alone cannot establish the right repair. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation
Identify which leg failed
| What stopped | What to inspect | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot read its input | Source availability, input protocol, EOF behavior, and input-scoped options. | That an output reconnect setting will repair a broken source. |
| FFmpeg can read input but loses YouTube publishing | Network path, ingest URL and protocol, stream key, TLS/RTMP errors, and whether FFmpeg stays running. | That HTTP reconnect options apply to RTMP/RTMPS output. |
| The process exits or the source itself fails | Process status, capture device or file state, and the first relevant log error. | That every ended stream is a network reconnect problem. |
FFmpeg describes HTTP and RTMP separately: RTMP carries a stream over TCP/IP, while the HTTP protocol documentation defines its own reconnect controls. The documented HTTP options do not establish a general-purpose RTMP output reconnection switch. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation

If the failed connection is an HTTP input
For an HTTP source, FFmpeg documents reconnect behavior in its HTTP protocol options. These options must be scoped to the relevant input and placed before that input in the command; they are not global promises that any stream will resume.
reconnectretries after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection. It can suit an input expected to continue, but it does not make a source that has genuinely ended live again.reconnect_streamedenables reconnection for streamed, non-seekable inputs.- HTTP error and network error retry options, along with retry count and delay limits, can constrain which failures are retried and for how long.
Check that the source is still available, that its provider allows reconnections, and that the options precede the matching -i. Confirm the exact option names and behavior in the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version before changing a production command. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation

If the failed connection is YouTube publishing
Verify the current ingest URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the stream URL and stream key shown in the current stream settings. YouTube identifies these as the details that direct the encoder feed to the correct stream.
- Confirm that the URL scheme matches your intended transport. If you intend to use RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL rather than assuming an RTMP URL is encrypted.
- Check the installed FFmpeg build for support for the protocol you selected, then inspect the first connection, authentication, or TLS error in the log.
- For an SSL error, verify the scheme and server against the URL YouTube provided; YouTube’s guidance discusses port 443 where appropriate. Do not change the port without checking the provided URL and error.
- Keep the stream key private in logs, screenshots, support requests, and examples.
YouTube explains stream URL and key setup in Manage live stream settings and discusses encrypted ingest in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. These checks may resolve a configuration or reachability problem; they do not prove that a particular FFmpeg build will automatically resume a dropped publishing connection.
Do not apply HTTP reconnect flags to RTMP output by guesswork
If the input continues but the YouTube output disconnects, diagnose that publishing path on its own. HTTP reconnect options describe HTTP protocol behavior; they are not documented as a generic RTMP/RTMPS output retry mechanism. Do not add an unverified flag or assume FFmpeg will reconnect just because its process remains alive. The complete command, build, and error are needed to determine whether a version- and output-specific recovery method is available.

Check upload capacity and YouTube stream health
A connection can be reachable yet unstable under the stream’s upload load. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. For primary and backup encoders, its advice is to account for the primary plus backup bitrate, then add 20%. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted service.
- Compare the configured stream bitrate with the upload capacity available to the streaming machine during the tour, not just a best-case speed-test result.
- Leave the recommended headroom, and include both encoder bitrates if primary and backup streams run at the same time.
- Check Live Control Room stream-health messages and the actual outbound connection around the time of the disconnect.
- Correlate timestamps with FFmpeg logs to distinguish a network disruption from an input or process failure.
YouTube warns, “Have a reliable network: A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.

Separate encoder compatibility from reconnect recovery
Correct video settings help YouTube ingest the feed; they do not reconnect a dead publishing socket. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs including H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check your encoder configuration against the current YouTube guidance and use the settings appropriate to your resolution and bitrate. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
For a continuous property tour, test with representative movement and audio before the scheduled broadcast. Watch stream health while testing and deliberately test the recovery plan, including what happens if the input drops, the publishing connection drops, or the FFmpeg process exits. A process supervisor or external monitoring strategy may help restore service after a process failure, but the appropriate tool and command depend on your operating system and deployment; no one supervisor command is established here.

Consider HLS only if its trade-offs fit
YouTube supports HLS ingestion when its encoder and playlist requirements are met. HLS sends video segments rather than the continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube says it has higher latency. It is a protocol choice to evaluate for a specific encoder or feature need, not a drop-in fix for an RTMP reconnect error. Check YouTube’s requirements before switching: Set up an HLS stream.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input ends or disconnects, while FFmpeg is still running | Input reachability, EOF semantics, and HTTP input options. | Confirm whether the source should continue; review HTTP reconnect and retry limits for your FFmpeg version. |
| Input continues but YouTube reports no incoming data | Output connection, ingest URL, protocol, key, and outbound network. | Verify Live Control Room settings and correlate YouTube health messages with the FFmpeg output error. |
| RTMPS fails with an SSL or connection error | URL scheme/server, FFmpeg protocol support, and network reachability. | Use the RTMPS URL provided by YouTube; check its port guidance, including 443 where appropriate. |
| The FFmpeg process has exited | Process-level failure, exhausted input, or source/capture failure. | Find the earliest fatal log entry and determine how the service will detect and restart a failed process. |
| Health degrades when the tour becomes busy or detailed | Available upload capacity relative to bitrate and motion. | Check stream health and network capacity under representative load; preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded property-tour video, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it does not go live from a camera. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
For a continuous broadcast, note that YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived automatically. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
