First identify where the stream is failing: the fireplace video input, the YouTube publishing connection, normal end-of-file, or the FFmpeg process. Each needs a different fix. HTTP reconnect flags apply to HTTP inputs; they are not general-purpose switches for a broken RTMP output. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer. If a finite fireplace video simply ends, use -stream_loop -1 before its -i.
Diagnose which part of the stream failed
Read the FFmpeg log around the first error, not just the final exit message. The first failure usually points to the right layer. A fireplace stream can stop because its source ended or disconnected, its output connection to YouTube failed, YouTube rejected or degraded the ingest, or the FFmpeg process itself exited.
| What you observe | Likely boundary | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input errors, connection loss, or unexpected EOF | Input source | Confirm the input really is HTTP and whether EOF means the source ended or merely disconnected. Consider HTTP input reconnect options only when they match that case. |
| “Broken pipe” or a write error to the YouTube destination | Publishing output | Check the RTMP/RTMPS connection and consider FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery. |
| The local fireplace clip ends cleanly | Normal end-of-file | If it is a finite file intended to repeat, loop the input with -stream_loop -1. |
| FFmpeg stops running | Process | Reconnect options cannot restart an exited process. A service manager or external supervisor is a separate layer. |
| FFmpeg appears connected, but YouTube playback or health is poor | Encoder or ingest health | Check encoder settings and YouTube Live Control Room messages rather than assuming a reconnect flag will fix it. |
Use HTTP reconnect options only for HTTP inputs
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options govern input behavior. The documented cases include reconnecting after a disconnection before EOF, treating EOF as an error, handling network errors, retrying selected HTTP errors, and reconnecting for streamed sources. These options do not provide universal recovery for an RTMP or RTMPS output to YouTube. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation.
Use reconnect_at_eof only when EOF is acting as a disconnect symptom—for example, an intended endless HTTP source ended unexpectedly. If the source is supposed to finish, treating EOF as an error can cause unwanted retries. Match the option to the actual failure, and check the installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http; the online documentation and available options can vary by FFmpeg version.

Loop a finite fireplace video at the input
If the source is a local file that should repeat, put -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i. This handles normal EOF; it does not repair a broken network connection to YouTube.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 [encoding and mapping options] ...
FFmpeg options have scope. Placing an input option after the relevant -i may not apply it to that input. For a playlist or multiple inputs, place the loop option before the input it is meant to repeat. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Recover a failed YouTube output with the FIFO muxer
For network-output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO pseudo-muxer. It separates encoding from muxing by passing packets through a queue to a separate thread; attempt_recovery can restart a failed output. The FIFO muxer documentation describes this behavior and its options.
FFmpeg’s official RTMP example uses this output pattern:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
The example says it attempts recovery every second indefinitely during temporary network failure. This is a retry policy, not a guarantee: it cannot make a dead source, permanent destination error, invalid stream key, ended live session, or terminated FFmpeg process recover by itself.
Choose what happens when recovery is slow
The FIFO queue can fill while the output is unavailable. Blocking can preserve packets but stall encoding; dropping packets can keep real-time processing moving but omit part of the stream. The official RTMP example chooses -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, so gaps are a possible trade-off. The documented default queue size is 60 packets.

max_recovery_attempts sets the allowed consecutive unsuccessful recovery attempts; the documented default is unlimited. recovery_wait_time sets the delay between attempts; its documented default is five seconds, while the RTMP example sets it to one second. Confirm the options supported by your installed build with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo.
Illustrative combined pattern
This pattern combines a looping local file with FIFO output recovery. It is illustrative, not a complete copy-paste command: adapt the encoding options, stream mapping, destination and credentials to your setup.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 [encoding and mapping options] -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -map 0:v -map 0:a [YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest URL and stream key]
Never expose a real stream key in logs, screenshots, shared commands, or public examples. If you use an HTTP live source instead of a local file, configure applicable HTTP input options before that source’s -i; they remain separate from FIFO output recovery.
Check YouTube ingest settings and stream health
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS for encoder streaming and recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise that a network interruption will recover.
Test before starting and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event. If FFmpeg remains connected but YouTube reports a problem, use those messages to distinguish ingest or encoder issues from a reconnect failure.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
- HTTP source disconnects before EOF: verify the source URL and network path, then use the HTTP input reconnect behavior suited to a disconnect. Do not expect it to restore the YouTube output.
- HTTP source reaches EOF: determine whether EOF is expected. Use
reconnect_at_eofonly if the source is meant to remain live; for a finite local file, use-stream_loop -1instead. - YouTube output reports a broken pipe: inspect the publishing connection, destination and key, then configure output recovery through FIFO. Check whether blocking or dropping queued packets fits your continuity needs.
- FFmpeg exits: an option inside the FFmpeg command cannot recover a process that no longer exists. Configure process supervision separately for the operating system and deployment you use.
- YouTube shows poor stream health while FFmpeg is running: verify the ingest protocol and encoder guidance, then inspect Live Control Room messages. Repeated reconnect attempts are not a substitute for valid ingest settings.
