Fix FFmpeg Videos YouTube Live Rejects for Unsupported Pixel Format

For SDR H.264, yuv420p is a useful FFmpeg starting point—but first distinguish HDR, confirm the encoder’s actual output, and test YouTube stream health.

For a standard SDR H.264 stream, explicitly convert the video to yuv420p and verify the encoded output:

ffmpeg -i input -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

This is a starting point, not a universal command: preserve or deliberately choose the source’s dimensions, frame rate, and color characteristics. First check whether the video is SDR or HDR. YouTube’s current live guidance does not mandate one FFmpeg pixel format for every codec, encoder, and ingest protocol. YouTube’s live encoder settings and FFmpeg’s pixel-format documentation explain the relevant constraints.

Check whether the source is SDR or HDR

Do not apply the SDR conversion command blindly to HDR material. YouTube’s standard live guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR, while its separate HDR instructions describe a 10-bit HEVC workflow using 4:2:0 settings. Choose the workflow that matches the actual source and intended stream.

  • SDR: For an H.264 transcode, yuv420p is a practical compatibility starting point.
  • HDR: Follow YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance rather than forcing an SDR format. If preserving HDR, match the source’s color primaries, transfer characteristics, and matrix.

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations and its HDR workflow are distinct; the appropriate codec, bit depth, and pixel format depend on the intended stream.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inspect the format FFmpeg is actually producing

The requested pixel format is not necessarily the format an encoder can provide. FFmpeg’s -pix_fmt option requests an output format; if the encoder cannot select it, FFmpeg may warn and choose the best supported format instead. Read the encoding output and probe the resulting file or stream to confirm what was produced.

FFmpeg documents a strict form, -pix_fmt +FORMAT, that errors rather than allowing that fallback. The + prefix also disables automatic conversions inside filtergraphs, so use it only when you want a hard failure instead of a fallback.

Convert an SDR H.264 output to yuv420p

Use the output pixel-format option

For a typical SDR H.264 file, add -pix_fmt yuv420p to the output options:

ffmpeg -i input -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

This example re-encodes video with libx264 and audio with AAC. It does not specify resolution, frame rate, or color metadata; retain the input’s intended values or set them deliberately for your stream. FFmpeg’s documentation describes -pix_fmt and its encoder-format fallback behavior.

Place a format filter in a filter chain

If you need to place conversion explicitly in a video filter chain, FFmpeg also documents the format-filter route:

ffmpeg -i input -vf format=pix_fmts=yuv420p -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

Use this approach when the format conversion belongs at a particular point in your filters. The filter syntax and examples are in the FFmpeg Filters Documentation.

Match the rest of YouTube’s live settings

Pixel format is only one part of a valid live output. YouTube’s live encoder page lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); progressive scan; square pixels; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It specifies Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR or 10-bit HDR. Check the current YouTube live settings and the requirements for your chosen ingest protocol before streaming.

Do not treat YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings as live-ingest requirements: that page concerns uploaded videos, not a live stream.

Verify the result and test the live stream

  1. Run the encode again. Confirm FFmpeg completes without a pixel-format fallback warning or other relevant error.
  2. Inspect the output. Probe the encoded file or inspect the encoder output to confirm the actual codec, pixel format, bit depth, dimensions, frame rate, and color characteristics match your intended SDR or HDR workflow.
  3. Test before going live. Connect using the intended protocol and review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
  4. If YouTube still rejects it, check other variables. Recheck codec, bit depth, frame rate, ingest protocol, and whether the source is intentionally HDR. A pixel-format rejection message does not establish that pixel format is the only problem.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely issue What to do
FFmpeg warns that the requested pixel format is unavailable or chooses another format The selected encoder may not support the requested format. Check the encoder’s supported formats and inspect the output. Use a compatible encoder or filter workflow; use FFmpeg’s strict + form if you want the job to fail instead of silently falling back.
The SDR H.264 stream is rejected after encoding Pixel format may not be the only mismatch. Check codec, bit depth, frame rate, protocol, and YouTube’s live settings. Test again and read the stream-health messages.
An HDR source looks wrong or is rejected after conversion to yuv420p An SDR conversion can discard or alter intended HDR characteristics. Use YouTube’s separate HEVC/10-bit HDR workflow and preserve the source’s color characteristics where intended.
The file uses recommended upload settings but live ingest still fails Upload recommendations are not the same as live-stream specifications. Check the live encoder guidance for your ingest protocol, rather than relying on the upload page.
