There is no single FFmpeg flag that fixes every YouTube live-stream disconnect from a Google Compute Engine VM. First confirm the YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then compare YouTube’s stream health with the first FFmpeg error at the time of a drop. Check the VM’s outbound network and resource behavior against the same timestamps. The correct next step depends on whether FFmpeg is sending over RTMP, RTMPS, HTTP, or another protocol.
Start by identifying what disconnected
Record the exact FFmpeg version and build, the complete command with the stream key redacted, the output protocol, and the timestamp of each interruption. Establish whether FFmpeg exits, remains running while output stalls, or reports a connection error. Those outcomes point to different parts of the path; without them, a generic reconnect command is guesswork.
- Redact the stream key before sharing a command or log. Treat the key as a credential.
- Preserve the first error around the interruption, not just later retry messages.
- Note whether the YouTube preview disappears, shows an error, or continues receiving video when FFmpeg reports a problem.
Verify YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream’s encoder setup.
- Compare the server URL and stream key shown there with the destination configured in FFmpeg. YouTube’s setup instructions describe copying those values into the encoder: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Check whether a preview appears and record the status or health messages shown in Live Control Room.
A wrong or outdated destination or key can prevent successful ingest. A preview or health message is useful evidence about what YouTube receives, but it does not by itself prove whether the cause is credentials, FFmpeg, the VM, or the route between them.
Compare YouTube health with FFmpeg’s log
YouTube’s Live Streaming API defines stream status and exposes a healthStatus object for diagnosing streaming problems. Use the stream’s status and health information alongside the sender-side FFmpeg log: one describes what YouTube sees, while the other records what the encoder reports. Neither alone establishes the cause of a particular disconnect. See the YouTube Live Streams API reference.

- If YouTube stops receiving video at the same time FFmpeg reports a connection or write error, investigate the output connection and VM network observations.
- If YouTube reports a health problem while FFmpeg continues sending, inspect the health details and the encoded stream configuration before changing retry behavior.
- If the process exits, capture the exit code and the earliest preceding error; restarting the process without that evidence can conceal the original failure.
Do not apply HTTP reconnect flags blindly to RTMP output
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max under its HTTP protocol options. They are not general-purpose RTMP-output controls. Confirm the protocol used by the output URL and the options supported by the installed FFmpeg build before adding any of them. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes their protocol-specific behavior.
If the destination is HTTP-based, consult that documentation and your installed build’s help for the applicable options. Retry settings can help with transient network failures, but indiscriminate retries are not a fix for permanent authorization or configuration errors. The documented HTTP options include retry limits and delay controls; choose them in the context of the actual failure rather than copying a generic command.

Check the Google Compute Engine VM at the same timestamps
Correlate the FFmpeg log with the VM’s outbound connectivity and resource or network observations. Look for whether the process is still running and whether the VM’s observed behavior changes when the stream stalls. The available documentation does not establish a particular machine type, region, firewall change, or network setting as the fix for this problem; do not change those on speculation alone.
Know when Google Cloud Live Stream API is a different solution
In a direct setup, FFmpeg on the VM sends its output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed pipeline: an encoder such as FFmpeg sends input to a managed channel, which transcodes and publishes configured outputs; its input endpoints can use RTMP or SRT. That architecture requires its own channel endpoint and configuration, so it is not a checkbox or reconnect setting that repairs a direct GCE-to-YouTube stream. The right choice depends on whether you need that managed media pipeline. The documented architecture distinction does not establish a cost or reliability advantage for either approach.
Common disconnect symptoms and what to do next

What you need for an incident-specific fix
A useful diagnosis needs the FFmpeg version/build, the full command with the key removed, the output protocol, the first error and timestamp, YouTube’s corresponding status or health details, and relevant VM/network observations. Without those details, the evidence supports this diagnostic sequence—not a guaranteed command or universal fix.
