A full disk can stop an FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream when FFmpeg cannot write a recording, temporary file, or log—but a YouTube “no data” warning alone does not prove storage is the cause. Check the exact paths FFmpeg uses, restore writable space, and compare local errors with YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages before restarting or changing reconnect options.
Capture the failure before changing anything
Record the FFmpeg version, the complete command with stream keys and other credentials removed, the process exit status, and the final stderr lines without truncation. Preserve the relevant timestamps. Do not post a YouTube stream key or credentials in a log or support request.
FFmpeg normally sends diagnostics to stderr. Its -report option writes the command line and log output to a report file and implies debug-level logging, so that file can itself consume storage. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for logging options and check the documentation or help for your installed build when behavior or options are in question.
Check every filesystem FFmpeg uses
Inspect the actual paths used by the running process; do not assume they are relative to the directory from which you launched it. Check free bytes and, on systems that expose them, free inodes on every relevant filesystem:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Input files or a local archive/recording destination.
- Output files, if the command also records locally.
- Working and temporary directories.
- The destination for stderr redirection, service logs, or an FFmpeg report file.
The exact commands for checking capacity depend on your operating system, deployment, filesystem, and how FFmpeg was started. A filesystem can run out of inodes even when it still has free bytes. Identify the full path and the filesystem behind it before deleting files or changing the command.
Identify which layer failed
| Layer | Evidence to check | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Local storage or logging | Capacity and inode availability; failed local writes; final stderr lines; report and log destination | A host-side storage problem is more likely when a specific local path cannot be written. Confirm which filesystem is affected. |
| FFmpeg input | Input protocol errors and protocol-specific reconnect messages | An input interruption is a separate issue. FFmpeg reconnect options apply only to documented protocol cases. |
| Network or publishing output | Output write errors, outbound connectivity, and YouTube health messages | If local paths are healthy, investigate the outbound connection and publishing output. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, local archive where available, and outbound connection (YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream). |
| YouTube ingest or configuration | Timestamped Live Control Room messages about format, codec, container, keyframes/GOP, or incoming data | Treat an ingest or encoder-configuration warning as distinct from disk exhaustion. Check the settings YouTube identifies (YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream). |
A “no data” symptom is not enough to diagnose a full disk. Match the times in FFmpeg’s stderr and local logs against the timestamped messages in YouTube Live Control Room. That comparison helps distinguish a local write failure from an input, network, or ingestion problem.

Recover safely if storage or logging is the cause
- Preserve useful evidence. Save the relevant stderr tail and timestamps before clearing or rotating logs. Keep credentials out of shared copies.
- Find and address the specific consumer. If an FFmpeg report or redirected log is growing, stop unnecessary debug reporting and choose a verbosity level appropriate for normal operation. FFmpeg’s documentation describes logging destinations and verbosity; it does not prescribe one rotation method that fits every host.
- Restore writable capacity. If a recording or other output filesystem is full, safely stop the process if needed, free or add suitable capacity, and confirm the intended target path is writable. Leave operational headroom; there is no universal free-space threshold for every workload.
- Check whether space was actually reclaimed. On some operating systems, deleting a log does not free its occupied space while a running process still holds the file open. Treat this as a possibility only if filesystem and process evidence support it; releasing the handle may require stopping or restarting the process.
- Restart only after verifying the fix. Once the relevant destination has capacity and is writable, restart FFmpeg and confirm that it is producing output and that YouTube is receiving data. A restart does not guarantee that an already-failed publishing session will resume.
- Set bounded retention deliberately. Use the host’s normal logging and rotation facilities for your operating system and service setup. Avoid leaving debug reports or redirected logs to grow without a retention plan.
Reconnect options do not fix a full disk
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for particular protocols and use cases, including some input reconnections. Their scope is protocol-specific; they do not create filesystem capacity, repair a failed local write, or guarantee that an interrupted YouTube publishing output can continue in the same session. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the protocol actually in use before adding reconnect flags.
The -nostdin option can be useful when running FFmpeg as a background process that should not read terminal input. It is not a disk-capacity fix; see the FFmpeg FAQ.

If the disk is not full, continue the diagnosis
When all relevant local paths remain writable and have capacity, stop changing disk settings and follow the timestamps to the next likely failure layer. Check input errors, outbound connectivity, and the exact Live Control Room health message. YouTube identifies format, codec, container, and keyframe/GOP settings as possible causes of ingest trouble; use the message and YouTube’s guidance rather than assuming every interruption is a storage problem.
