Fix Grand Theft Auto V Crashing on Startup on PC

If Grand Theft Auto V closes, freezes, shows a black screen, or never reaches the main menu, start with the low-risk fixes: reboot Windows, launch the correct Enhanced or Legacy edition through its original launcher, clear launch options, remove mods and overlays, update Windows and GPU drivers, then verify the game files. If Story Mode works but GTA Online fails, troubleshoot BattlEye separately.

Requirements and procedures below were checked against Rockstar’s published guidance available in the August 16, 2026 research snapshot. Launcher labels and requirements can change.

First, identify the failure

“Crashing on startup” is a broad symptom, not one diagnosis. Rockstar’s general GTAV troubleshooting guidance covers patches, drivers, file verification, redistributables, antivirus, system specifications, and logs.

1. Confirm Enhanced or Legacy before troubleshooting

PC players may have access to separate GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy versions. Check the edition name in Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic before applying fixes or comparing requirements.

• Enhanced minimum requirements: Windows 10 build 1909 or newer, 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590-class CPU, a GTX 1630 or RX 6400-class 4 GB GPU, and 105 GB on an SSD.
• Enhanced recommended requirements: Windows 11, 16 GB dual-channel RAM, an Intel Core i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600-class CPU, an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT-class GPU, and a DirectStorage-compatible drive.
• Legacy minimum requirements: Windows 10 64-bit, a Core 2 Quad Q6600 or Phenom 9850-class CPU, 4 GB RAM, a 9800 GT or HD 4870-class 1 GB GPU, and 125 GB of storage.

Enhanced’s published minimum specifically requires an SSD; Legacy does not have that same published SSD requirement. Minimum specifications do not guarantee a stable launch. If the PC falls below Enhanced’s requirements, test Legacy instead of repeatedly forcing Enhanced to start. Rockstar describes the two editions as separate PC versions, and online players must use the same edition as their friends. 2. Follow the fastest safe fix sequence

Restart Windows and close duplicate processes

1. Restart the PC.
2. Do not press Play repeatedly while the launcher is still closing.
3. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
4. End only clearly related stuck GTAV or launcher processes. If you cannot identify a process, reboot rather than terminating unrelated Windows tasks.
5. Launch GTAV from the platform where it was installed.

Rockstar lists multiple launcher instances, an uncleared game process, and permissions as possible causes of the “instance already running” message.

Launch through the original platform

Use Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher directly. Avoid desktop shortcuts created by scripts, batch files, Command Prompt commands, third-party launchers, and custom mod managers during the test. Rockstar specifically recommends direct launching for BattlEye troubleshooting.

Clear launch arguments

• Rockstar Games Launcher: Open Settings, select GTAV under My installed games, and remove custom launch arguments.
• Steam: Open Library, right-click GTAV, select Properties, open General → Launch Options, and remove custom commands.
• Epic Games: Open Library, select the three dots beside GTAV, choose Manage, and disable or clear Launch Options.

Leave the fields blank for the cleanest startup test. Rockstar’s BattlEye guidance specifically calls out launch arguments.

Temporarily remove mods and injectors

Move or rename third-party files rather than deleting them. Check for items such as:

• dinput8.dll
• ScriptHookV
• OpenIV.asi
• ReShade, Special K, ENB, and custom ASI files
• Mod folders and third-party overlays or injectors

File verification may not remove third-party files placed beside the game executable. A clean, unmodified launch is therefore an important diagnostic test. ReShade and Special K can conflict with BattlEye according to Rockstar.

Update everything before testing again

1. Run Windows Update and restart.
2. Install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer, not a generic driver-updater utility: NVIDIA drivers or AMD drivers.
3. Open the launcher while connected to the internet and allow GTAV, the launcher, and BattlEye to finish updating.
4. Test again before attempting advanced driver cleanup or rollback. A clean installation or rollback is situation-dependent, not a universal fix.

3. Verify GTAV’s files

Verification can repair missing or corrupted game files without a full reinstall. It will not necessarily resolve incompatible hardware, drivers, account issues, or third-party files.

Rockstar Games Launcher

1. Sign in and open Settings.
2. Select GTAV under My installed games.
3. Select Verify Integrity beside Verify game file integrity.
4. Wait for the process to finish, restart the launcher, and test.

Steam

1. Open Library and right-click GTAV.
2. Select Properties → Installed Files.
3. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Older instructions may call this tab Local Files; the current Steam client commonly uses Installed Files.

Epic Games Launcher

1. Open Library.
2. Select the three dots beside GTAV.
3. Choose Manage → Verify.
4. Wait for the scan and repair to complete.

4. If Story Mode works but GTA Online crashes

Do not automatically blame BattlEye for every startup crash. This branch is appropriate when BattlEye appears in the message, Online fails while Story Mode works, or the game closes during the transition into Online.

1. Close GTAV and open Rockstar Games Launcher.
2. Open Settings and enable BattlEye.
3. Confirm all launch-option fields are blank.
4. Remove ReShade, Special K, and other graphics injectors for the test.
5. Add the correct GTAV BattlEye folder to your antivirus exclusions.

Your installation may be on another drive or use a different folder. Rockstar’s BattlEye troubleshooting page lists the settings, exclusions, and launcher requirements.

For “Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Driver Load Error (1072)”, add the exclusion first, then delete only the BattlEye service directory—usually C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesBattlEye—and relaunch GTAV so the service can be recreated. If required, test the GTAV BattlEye launcher executable as administrator. This is different from deleting a Windows DLL.

Third-party servers may provide instructions for launching without BattlEye, but that does not allow connection to official GTA Online servers.

5. Repair DirectX and Visual C++

If the message mentions Direct3D, D3D, DirectX, C++, or missing runtime files, open the GTAV installation folder and find Redistributables. The default Rockstar path is:

1. Run the included DirectX installer.
2. Run the included Visual C++ installer.
3. Restart Windows.
4. Verify GTAV’s files again if it still crashes.

The path can differ between Enhanced, Legacy, Steam, Epic, Rockstar, and custom installations. Do not download individual DLL files from random websites.

6. Test antivirus and overlays carefully

Prefer narrowly scoped exclusions for GTAV, Rockstar Games Launcher, and BattlEye. As a brief diagnostic test, you can temporarily disable real-time protection, but re-enable it immediately afterward, avoid browsing while protection is disabled, and use a trusted network. If the test confirms a conflict, follow the antivirus vendor’s guidance rather than leaving protection disabled.

Also test with Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, ReShade, and Special K disabled. These are possible conflicts, not guaranteed causes.

7. Repair Windows files when a DLL is blocked

If BattlEye reports a blocked or corrupted Windows DLL, or other applications are malfunctioning, run System File Checker:

1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
2. Select Run as administrator.
3. Run:

sfc /scannow

Wait for the scan to finish, restart Windows, and test GTAV. Rockstar recommends Windows updates and SFC for documented pcapwsp.dll, dsound.dll, wininet.dll, and bcrypt.dll BattlEye issues.

For pcapwsp.dll, Rockstar associates the file with ProxyCap. Close or uninstall ProxyCap, update Windows, run SFC, and retain the launcher log if the problem continues.

8. Try administrator mode only as a targeted test

If the error specifically involves permissions or an already-running instance, right-click the relevant Rockstar, Steam, or Epic shortcut, select Properties → Compatibility, enable Run this program as an administrator, apply, and test. Undo the setting if it does not help. Permanent administrator mode can create permission mismatches between the launcher, game, and mod tools.

9. Check logs before reinstalling

Look for the last error before the crash, repeated DLL names, BattlEye service failures, authentication or entitlement errors, Direct3D/GPU initialization messages, and paths pointing to mods or injectors.

Keep the newest log, DxDiag, and MSInfo files for Rockstar Support. Do not post unredacted logs publicly because they may contain identifying or system information. Rockstar’s general troubleshooting guidance explains the requested diagnostic material.

Error-specific fixes

Code 134

Connect to the internet, restart the launcher, allow GTAV to update, verify files, and reinstall only if the update and verification steps fail. Rockstar associates this code with an outdated game version and, in some cases, entitlement or offline-verification problems.

“An instance of Grand Theft Auto V is already running”

Reboot, check Task Manager for a clearly stuck GTAV or launcher process, close other launchers that may be starting the same copy, and launch through one platform only. Test administrator mode only if permissions appear relevant.

ERR_GFX_INIT or Direct3D initialization errors

Confirm that the correct edition is supported, update the GPU driver, remove graphics injectors and overlays, repair DirectX and Visual C++ from Redistributables, and verify files. Graphics-setting changes cannot compensate for a GPU below Enhanced’s requirements.

BattlEye blocked dsound.dll, wininet.dll, or bcrypt.dll

Test the unmodified game, update Windows, run sfc /scannow, and investigate mods or software that altered the file. Never delete the DLL manually.

Reinstall GTAV only as a last resort

Back up saves, screenshots, configuration files, and mod files before uninstalling. Verification and configuration cleanup should come first.

Rockstar Games Launcher

1. Open Settings.
2. Select GTAV under My installed games.
3. Select Uninstall and confirm.
4. Open Games, choose GTAV from My library, select Install Now, then Install.

Steam and Epic use their own uninstall menus. After uninstalling, remove leftover GTAV files only after confirming the folder and preserving your backups. Reinstalling may not remove every BattlEye or configuration component; Steam’s GTAV Enhanced listing warns that BattlEye may require manual removal after uninstall.

Should you buy hardware?

Only consider an upgrade after identifying the edition and exhausting software checks. An SSD is relevant when Enhanced is installed on a hard disk or there is insufficient SSD capacity. A GPU upgrade is relevant when the existing GPU is below Enhanced’s published minimum or cannot initialize its required graphics features. RAM is relevant below 8 GB or when the system has broader memory pressure. None of these purchases fixes a bad launch argument, corrupt launcher state, BattlEye conflict, or mod problem.

If the PC genuinely fails Enhanced’s requirements, compare capacity and compatibility through Samsung SSDs, Crucial SSDs, NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards, AMD Radeon graphics cards, or Crucial memory. Prices and availability were not verified in the research pass.

Contact Rockstar Support with useful evidence

Escalate through Rockstar Support when the clean launch, updates, verification, BattlEye checks, and runtime repairs fail. Include:

• Enhanced or Legacy
• Rockstar, Steam, or Epic
• Exact error text and when it appears
• Whether Story Mode works
• Whether the installation is modded
• GPU model and driver version
• launcher.log, DxDiag, and MSInfo
• Every troubleshooting step already attempted

Frequently Asked Questions

Will verifying GTAV files remove my mods?

Not necessarily. Verification repairs missing or damaged managed game files, but third-party DLLs, injectors, and mod folders beside the executable may remain. Move or rename them for a clean test.

Can I fix BattlEye by deleting wininet.dll or bcrypt.dll?

No. Do not delete Windows system DLLs. Update Windows, run sfc /scannow, remove incompatible modifications, and follow Rockstar’s BattlEye guidance.

Should I use Legacy instead of Enhanced?

Use Legacy when the PC does not meet Enhanced’s published requirements. The editions are separate, and online players must use the same edition as their friends.
