That tells you whether to troubleshoot the selected capture source, OBS’s output, or YouTube’s ingestion. Also note the source type—display, window, game, camera, image, or media file—and your operating system; the right fix depends on both.
Find where the picture disappears
Before changing settings, compare the same scene in OBS, a short local recording, and YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check that the source is enabled in the active scene, the correct display or window is selected, and no other source is covering it. These checks help narrow the fault; they do not establish what caused a particular black screen.

Use a brief local recording to distinguish a capture problem from a streaming problem. If it contains the right image but YouTube does not, repeatedly changing the OBS capture source is unlikely to address the part of the path that failed.
Fix a black OBS preview
Confirm the scene and source
- In the scene you intend to stream, make sure the relevant source is visible and enabled.
- Open the source’s properties and verify it points to the intended display, window, game, camera, or media file.
- Check the scene’s source order: an opaque source above the intended image may hide it.
- For a camera or external video input, confirm the device is connected, selected, and producing a signal. A capture card is relevant only when the setup actually uses an external video input; it is not a general fix for an unknown source failure.
On a Windows laptop with two GPUs
Display capture can be affected by GPU selection on laptops with integrated and discrete graphics. OBS’s laptop guide describes the issue as historical and documents a newer display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later with OBS 27 or later. The guide recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU and trying the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails: OBS laptop GPU selection guide. The guide dates from 2021, so check your current Windows and OBS versions and the source’s properties before changing GPU preferences. Its advice is specific to a supported Windows display-capture setup, not a universal fix for cameras, media files, or other operating systems.

Check platform permissions and the source signal
If the source is a camera or window, verify that the selected device or window is available to OBS and that the operating system has not blocked access. If a media file is the source, confirm it still exists at the configured location and plays. For a display or game source, verify that OBS is capturing the intended display or application. These source-specific checks are more useful than changing unrelated output settings while the preview itself is already black.
If the preview is visible but the output is not
Black local recording
If OBS preview shows the intended picture but a recording does not, inspect OBS’s recording/output configuration and make another short test recording. Keep this separate from the YouTube connection: a recording that is black before it leaves the computer points to the local output path, not YouTube ingestion.

Black or unhealthy YouTube playback
When the local recording is good, open Live Control Room and check the preview, stream-health status, and any error messages. YouTube recommends checking encoder output and the outbound connection rather than assuming a capture-source fault. Follow the relevant steps in YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance, and check YouTube’s encoder setup tips for event accessibility and stream checks.
Separate capture faults from performance problems
A black source and an overloaded render or encoder are different problems. If the picture is present but the stream stutters, lags, or OBS reports encoding overload, OBS says rendering uses GPU resources and recommends reducing unnecessary GPU work. On Windows, running OBS as administrator is a quick performance troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed cure for a black capture source. Simplifying a scene or reducing heavy browser sources may also ease rendering load. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

OBS also cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular machine can stream or record well. The load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; without those details and actual load data, no specific computer can be declared sufficient. Verify recovery before leaving a showcase live
- Test the real scene. Before going live, preview and record a test with motion and audio like the product showcase itself—not just a still desktop. YouTube recommends testing before an event and matching the test to the real stream: YouTube encoder setup tips.
- Check the encoder settings. For the RTMP/RTMPS profile covered by YouTube’s guidance, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set bitrate and resolution to suit the connection and selected quality rather than assuming a value that the available upload cannot sustain. Consult YouTube troubleshooting and YouTube encoder setup tips.
- Confirm the viewer-facing result. Check that Live Control Room preview and the watch page show the expected product image and that audio and motion are correct. YouTube recommends checking event accessibility from the channel/watch page and mobile devices.
- Monitor health and errors. Keep Live Control Room open to monitor stream health and messages. A successful still preview before launch does not establish that a continuous stream will remain healthy.
HLS is a documented YouTube ingestion option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, but it has specific encoder requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. It is not a first-line remedy for a black screen; consider it only when the chosen codec or protocol requires it. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Keep a YouTube product showcase running
OBS is a software-encoder route; a dedicated hardware encoder is another option YouTube recognizes. Which fits depends on source compatibility, supported codec and protocol, load on the host computer, monitoring and recovery needs, and cost. External capture hardware is relevant only for a setup built around a camera or other video input. YouTube does not recommend buying hardware as a fix for an unspecified black-screen incident. A 24/7 workflow also needs monitoring and a recovery plan; the guidance cited here does not establish an uptime guarantee.
