A VOD playing in a browser or media player is not necessarily a game process that Game Capture can capture.
Locate the point where the picture turns black
Use the same scene and playback for each check. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitoring stream audio and video during the broadcast (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
- OBS preview is black: Check that the intended scene is selected, the source is visible and above any source covering it, and the capture source targets the game or player you mean to show. For Game Capture, check its setup and compatibility using OBS’s Game Capture Troubleshooting.
- OBS preview looks right, but a local recording is black: Make a short test recording and check whether the source disappears, changes, or becomes hidden during playback. A fullscreen game may stop rendering when you alt-tab away, so keep it visible during the test or observe it from a second monitor.
- OBS preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black: Inspect the encoder’s outgoing feed and the Live Control Room preview. An OBS image that looks correct does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving or displaying the same image. YouTube describes encoder streaming as sending an encoded feed to its service; its guidance is to check the preview before going live (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- OBS shows the VOD, but YouTube replaces it or interrupts the stream: Check YouTube Studio for a warning or rights issue. That symptom can be separate from a capture failure.
Fix a game source that is black in OBS
Make one change at a time and retest. Game Capture hooks a supported game process; it is not a universal way to capture every game or every video-playing application.
- Verify the target and source order. In the active scene, select the Game Capture source and confirm that it is configured for the game you are running. Make sure its visibility is enabled and that another visible source is not covering it.
- Close potential hook conflicts. Temporarily close overlays, FPS counters, and other software that interacts with the game. OBS specifically notes conflicts such as RTSS/MSI Afterburner and documents a compatibility setting for newer RTSS versions in its troubleshooting guide.
- Try a different display mode. Test windowed or borderless fullscreen. OBS recommends these modes for some titles and identifies Window Capture as an alternative for games that do not allow Game Capture hooks.
- Use administrator mode only when appropriate. OBS lists running OBS as administrator as a workaround for select games, not as a universal fix. Try it when the game or OBS’s game-specific guidance indicates an elevation issue.
- Check GPU assignment on laptops and multi-GPU systems. Consult OBS’s linked GPU-selection guidance and the relevant game-specific notes; OBS also calls out using the same GPU for OBS and Minecraft in its Minecraft guidance.
- Account for minimized fullscreen behavior. OBS states: “If a game is set to run in full-screen mode, when you alt+tab out the game, it will stop rendering.” It adds: “This means that you will not see the game in OBS while it is minimized.” Keep the game visible, test with OBS on a second monitor, or make a short recording to see whether focus changes explain the blank image. This behavior does not establish that the VOD is protected or uncapturable.
- Follow game-specific compatibility notes. OBS lists different workarounds for particular games, including administrator mode, Window Capture, or DX11. Use the workaround for your title rather than assuming one capture setting will fit every game.
If the VOD is playing in a browser or media player
Distinguish the application playing the VOD from the game itself. A browser or media player is an application window, not necessarily a game process that Game Capture can hook. Confirm which OBS source is meant to capture it, then test Window Capture for that window or Display Capture for the monitor. Display Capture can help determine whether the problem is specific to a window or game capture method, but it may also show unrelated desktop content.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide describes capture alternatives for games and known limitations; it does not establish that YouTube VOD playback is universally blocked from capture. A black rectangle alone is not enough evidence to identify DRM as the cause. Check the particular playback route and source before drawing that conclusion.
When the cause may be YouTube content handling
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. If YouTube identifies such material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams explains this process, and its livestream terms and conditions say the provider represents that they have the necessary rights to the content.

This is a separate possibility from an OBS capture failure: YouTube’s scanning does not mean every black live picture during VOD playback is a copyright action. Check YouTube Studio for a warning before diagnosing it that way, and make sure you have the rights needed to stream the material.

- Your operating system and OBS version.
- The game or VOD player, and whether the source is Game Capture, Window Capture, or Display Capture.
- Whether the OBS preview is black, whether a local recording is black, and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room preview is black.
- Any warning shown in YouTube Studio, plus what changed immediately before the image disappeared.
