First confirm which OBS counter is rising. If it is Dropped Frames (Network), lower the stream’s configured bitrate until it sits comfortably below repeatable, stable upload throughput from the VPS, then test again while watching YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If the network-drop counter still rises at a conservative bitrate, preserve OBS logs and route and resource measurements before asking Contabo to investigate. A VPS port-speed figure alone does not prove that the path from your server to YouTube ingest can sustain your stream.
Identify the kind of OBS lag first
OBS distinguishes network-related dropped frames from frames missed because rendering or encoding cannot keep up. They need different fixes: lowering bitrate may help a connection problem, but it does not directly resolve an overloaded encoder or rendering pipeline. Check the Stats window and the current log, and note the exact counter that increases. OBS characterizes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the sender and remote ingest server in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Dropped Frames (Network): investigate the configured bitrate, stable throughput, connection, and route to the ingest server.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: investigate rendering load, scene complexity, output resolution, frame rate, and actual GPU availability on the VPS.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: investigate encoder load and settings. A VPS may not have the GPU or hardware encoder available on a desktop, so verify what the server actually provides.
For rendering or encoding overload, OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying costly scenes; see its encoding performance troubleshooting guide. Do not treat all three counters as “dropped frames.”
Test whether your bitrate fits the VPS connection
- Record the current settings. Note OBS’s configured video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and the time of the test. Also note whether other VPS workloads are using the network.
- Measure sustained upload throughput from the VPS. A speed test is a starting point, not a guarantee of the capacity available to YouTube ingest. Repeat measurements under representative conditions and, where possible, use a relevant test endpoint.
- Lower the OBS video bitrate and repeat a comparable stream test. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a troubleshooting starting point, not a promise: peak test results can be undermined by route variation, transient congestion, protocol overhead, and other server traffic.
- Watch the exact network-drop counter. Record whether it continues to rise and whether the result changes at the lower bitrate. Change one setting at a time, keep the test duration and stream conditions comparable, and retain the original value so you can reverse the change.
Do not use a Contabo plan’s advertised port speed as if it were measured, sustained throughput from your VPS to YouTube. Contabo publishes a VPS and VDS port-speed range of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, subject to its policies; that range does not establish the performance of an individual route to ingest. Match the YouTube ingest settings to your stream
Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Test with motion and audio similar to the actual stream.
For H.264, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not a requirement to force those rates when the measured VPS path cannot sustain them. YouTube’s page also provides recommendations for AV1 and H.265; consult the applicable table rather than carrying H.264 figures across codecs.

Isolate route and configuration problems
If bitrate is comfortably below measured stable throughput and network drops continue, investigate the path and local OBS configuration. Make one change at a time and log its result so you can tell whether it helped.
- Try a different available stream server or ingest endpoint. A comparison with another service can also help diagnose whether the problem is specific to a route, but it is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee of YouTube performance.
- Check OBS’s Bind to IP setting and leave it at Default unless you have a specific network reason to bind an interface.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or security software, or network-priority/optimization software is affecting the connection. Tailor checks to the VPS operating system; Windows-specific options may not apply to a Linux server.
- On Windows only, OBS documents network optimizations/TCP pacing and IPv4-only as possible diagnostic changes. If changing IP family makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps for the options that apply to your setup. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce disconnections by adapting to congestion, but OBS describes it as a workaround rather than a root-cause fix; a lower bitrate can also reduce video quality.

Check Contabo policy, then escalate with evidence
Contabo’s current support guidance describes VPS and VDS port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and fair-use conditions, including possible throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive use. Its separate traffic rules, updated 2025-04-10, describe package allowances and package-related port throttling after ten consecutive days above the outgoing package allowance. Those policies do not diagnose packet loss, congestion, or routing quality to YouTube. Confirm the policy for your exact product and account in the customer panel or with Contabo rather than assuming another plan’s terms apply.
If the issue persists, send Contabo useful evidence rather than only saying the stream is unstable. Its server troubleshooting guidance asks for details such as the time the issue began, affected applications, resource metrics, traffic type, NIC changes, services and ports, and traceroute. - OBS logs and the exact counter that rises, with timestamps of the drops.
- Configured bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Repeatable throughput measurements and the test conditions.
- Whether lowering bitrate or changing an available ingest server changed the drop rate.
- CPU, RAM, and disk metrics around the incident, plus other relevant server workloads.
- Traceroute and any NIC, firewall, VPN, or network-optimization settings changed during diagnosis.
There is no published success rate or established performance result for every Contabo VPS-to-YouTube route. The practical distinction is whether drops track bitrate and connection conditions, correlate with resource pressure, or persist despite conservative settings and point to a route or provider issue.

OBS network drops are sender-side symptoms. Viewers can experience buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames, so resolving the OBS counter does not by itself guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. See OBS’s separate stream buffering troubleshooting guide.
