OBS dropped frames usually mean the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate you set—not that OBS itself is necessarily broken. First separate network drops from rendering or encoding lag; then check the configured bitrate, YouTube’s ingest health messages, and the route from your specific OVHcloud VPS. The symptoms alone cannot identify which part of that path is responsible.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote stream server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. For a YouTube broadcast, that remote endpoint is YouTube’s ingest server, not a server operated by OBS. The definition points toward the connection or bitrate, but it does not prove that YouTube, OVHcloud, or any particular network segment is at fault.
Do not confuse network drops with rendering lag or encoder overload. Those are separate performance problems: OBS may fail to render or encode frames fast enough because of system or GPU limits even when the outbound connection is stable. Check the dropped-frames percentage, rendering and encoding indicators, and the OBS session log together before changing settings.
How to diagnose dropped frames from an OVHcloud VPS
-
Capture a baseline from a representative stream
During the affected stream, record OBS’s dropped-frames percentage and its rendering and encoding indicators. Save the log for that session. Also note the time, VPS region and plan, output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, protocol, selected YouTube ingest endpoint, and whether the issue is continuous or intermittent. These details let you compare later tests without relying on memory.

-
Lower the bitrate as a controlled test
Change only the output bitrate and observe whether network drops improve. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee of a safe rate. The relevant capacity is stable throughput over the route to the actual YouTube ingest endpoint; a generic speed test may use a different route or produce a different result at another time. If drops fall materially at a lower bitrate, the previous setting was likely too close to or above what the path could sustain reliably.
-
Match YouTube’s recommendation to your ingest format
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Select the recommendation for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that applies to every YouTube stream.
H.264 output YouTube recommended ingest bitrate 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations on its current encoder settings page, crawled in 2026. They are not measurements of OVHcloud-to-YouTube throughput or a promise that a particular VPS route can sustain the rate. YouTube lists different ranges for H.265 and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs.

Check YouTube Live Control Room for matching errors
Review the stream’s health indicator and timestamped messages in Live Control Room. YouTube may flag bitrate, format, audio or video settings, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency. Fix an explicit ingest-setting error before blaming routing. If there is no matching ingest error while OBS’s network dropped counter rises, continue investigating the connection and route.

Compare endpoints or services without changing everything at once
Test a different YouTube ingest server if the option is available, or make a controlled test to another service where appropriate. Keep codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate constant where possible. If the stream works elsewhere, that is evidence of a destination- or path-specific difference; it does not, by itself, prove which provider caused the problem.

Use OVHcloud network tools as supporting evidence
OVHcloud documents several tools that can help characterize network conditions: Looking Glass for routes and routing tables from a data center, Proof for speed tests, Smokeping for ICMP reachability, latency, and path changes, and Weathermap for backbone link load. Compare observations by time and region. A generic speed result or ICMP response does not establish that the exact YouTube ingest flow is healthy.

Verify the VPS offer and local network configuration
Check the public bandwidth listed for your exact OVHcloud VPS offer and region. OVHcloud’s VPS page describes traffic as unlimited, but that does not mean unlimited instantaneous bandwidth or guaranteed throughput over a particular route. Inspect firewall and network configuration if other evidence points to a local VPS issue; the available facts do not establish that a firewall is the cause of any individual stream’s drops.
-
Try OBS network options only as reversible tests
OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, binding to the default IP, and trying IPv4-only. The exact options available depend on the operating system and OBS version. Change one setting at a time and restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting if IPv4-only makes no difference. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality when the connection cannot keep up, but it is a workaround that can mask symptoms, not a fix for the underlying connection.

Check edge equipment and interfering software only when they are on the route
OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi, and modem, router, cable, or other network hardware as possible contributors. Apply those checks to the machine that actually sends the stream. If OBS runs entirely on the VPS, your home Wi-Fi and router are not the VPS’s outbound path. If OBS runs locally while media or control components are hosted on the VPS, diagnose the local encoder’s actual route to YouTube.

Escalate with a reproducible record
If drops persist after bitrate reduction and endpoint or service comparisons, send OVHcloud support the affected timestamps, VPS region and plan, destination, OBS log, and repeated route, latency, and throughput observations. For a problem on a local ISP or last-mile path, OBS recommends contacting the ISP after software and hardware checks. Do not declare a route faulty based on one traceroute or one speed test.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or an OBS production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-based option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not diagnose or repair dropped frames in an OBS-to-YouTube stream. Instead, it removes the need to keep a computer and home connection running for that uploaded-video stream.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.

Copyright and stream-content checks
Before leaving any YouTube stream running, make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast. A stream key and a technically healthy ingest do not grant permission to use someone else’s material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright requirements and check that your content complies with its rules. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist; it is a preparation aid, not a substitute for rights or legal advice.
How to tell which layer is most likely failing
- OBS network dropped frames rise, while encoding and rendering indicators remain clear: prioritize bitrate, ingest health, and route or capacity tests.
- Rendering lag or encoding overload appears without a corresponding network-drop pattern: investigate the rendering or encoding workload rather than treating it as a route problem. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance points to GPU or system bottlenecks and recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate when capacity is the issue.
- YouTube reports a timestamped format or bitrate error: correct the indicated ingest setting and test again before pursuing network routing.
- Lowering bitrate helps, or results change with an endpoint or service test: the path’s sustainable capacity or destination-specific path is relevant, but further evidence is needed to locate responsibility.
Without the VPS region and offer, OBS log and counters, stream settings, selected ingest endpoint, and measurements from the affected time, there is no sound basis to name one cause. OVHcloud’s advertised bandwidth, a single speed test, or the dropped-frames counter alone cannot settle the diagnosis.
