Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with OBS’s Stats window and see which counter rises. Network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the streaming server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; rendering or encoding lag points to computer workload. The fix depends on the counter—lowering bitrate will not solve every kind of dropped frame.
Identify which frames OBS is dropping
In OBS, open View → Stats while reproducing the problem. Watch the counters for network-dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. OBS treats connection trouble separately from GPU rendering and encoding performance, so diagnose before changing settings.
- Network-dropped frames: the route to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Follow the connection troubleshooting below.
- Rendering or encoding lag: OBS cannot render or encode the scene fast enough. Reduce computer workload rather than treating it as an internet-speed problem.
OBS does not host the streaming server; it connects to the service you select. See the OBS Help Portal for that distinction.
Fix network-dropped frames
Reduce bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting article calls 75% of total upload speed a good starting point, not a guarantee. That estimate must still fit the streaming service’s limits and the upload capacity that remains stable on the actual route to its ingest server. A speed-test result alone does not prove that route is reliable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you stream to YouTube, use its current encoder table as a platform reference, then test the actual connection. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for 1080p30; for 720p30, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain either rate. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other codecs and frame rates. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency.
Test the connection path
- Use Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Check that the computer has an Ethernet port and that a cable run is feasible; some computers may need a compatible adapter. A suitable Cat6 cable is one option, but verify compatibility before buying.
- Try another ingest server, if the service offers one. You can also compare with another service. If the symptom changes, that helps identify whether the route or service is involved; it does not guarantee a fix for a service-specific connection problem.
- Check software that may interfere. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities that may deprioritize OBS, and outdated network drivers. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it matters.
- Inspect the local network. Check modem and router connectivity, cables, network cards, switches, extenders, and other devices using the connection. If the problem persists after local checks, OBS recommends contacting your ISP.
Treat advanced network options as tests
OBS’s troubleshooting guide also discusses network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, using the default Bind to IP setting, and testing IPv4 only. These are diagnostic options, not universal fixes. If an IPv4-only test makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. Change one option at a time and keep track of the original configuration.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can dynamically lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. This may help keep a stream going during congestion, but image quality falls and the underlying connection problem remains. Treat it as a fallback, not a repair.
Fix rendering or encoding lag
If OBS Stats shows rendering or encoding lag rather than network drops, focus on the streaming computer. OBS uses the GPU to composite and render scenes; GPU competition or a demanding scene can prevent frames from being processed on time.

- Close other applications that are competing for computer resources.
- Simplify scenes and scene collections, especially if they contain many active sources or effects.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the lag continues. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
These steps address rendering and encoding workload. Apply network troubleshooting separately if the network-dropped-frames counter also rises.
Choose YouTube settings and test before the service
YouTube advises choosing a quality level that is reliable for the internet connection, testing upload capacity, and monitoring stream health and messages. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the platform’s current table rather than treating one church-streaming bitrate as suitable for every setup.

- Set OBS’s output to a resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval supported by YouTube’s current guidance and your equipment.
- Run a test with representative sermon audio and video movement before the event. Static slides alone may not reflect the load of the actual program.
- During the test, watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. If a counter rises, follow the corresponding network or performance path above.
- If stability is more important than detail, test a lower resolution or frame rate and keep a lower-bitrate fallback ready.
ChurchLab’s church-focused guidance suggests 1080p30 as a starting point for a reliable system and 720p30 where stability matters more. That is secondary vendor guidance, not a platform rule; defer to YouTube’s current table and the fault shown in OBS Stats. See ChurchLab’s OBS settings guidance for church streaming.

| What you see | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped-frames counter rises | Connection stability or configured bitrate | Lower bitrate, test the ingest route, prefer Ethernet, and check local network hardware and software. |
| Rendering or encoding lag rises | GPU or computer workload | Close competing applications, simplify scenes, or reduce resolution or frame rate. |
| Connection degrades during congestion | Upload route cannot sustain the selected bitrate | Dynamic bitrate may reduce interruptions at the cost of quality; investigate the underlying connection too. |
| Problem remains after local network checks | ISP or wider connection path | Contact your ISP after checking the modem, router, cables, network devices, and software. |
