A delay heard only through monitoring does not prove that viewers hear it. If the recording or replay is out of sync, test the same local file in OBS Media Source when you can; for an ordered playlist, check VLC Video’s playlist and playback settings. There is no single documented setting that fixes every OBS playlist delay, and the available reports describe different symptoms on specific older setups.
Identify where the delay occurs before changing settings
Write down your operating system, OBS version, source type (Media Source or VLC Video), whether the media is local or network-based, and the approximate delay. Then compare three signals:
- OBS monitoring: listen through the device selected for monitoring. This is the sound you hear locally, not necessarily what the stream sends.
- Local recording: make a short OBS recording while the playlist is playing and check the audio against the picture. This helps determine whether the program output itself is out of sync.
- YouTube replay: if the concern is the audience experience, inspect the replay after the stream. Compare it with the local recording and monitor rather than assuming they share the same timing.
These comparisons matter because reported OBS cases have differed: one user described delayed VLC source output, while another described lagging monitor controls even though the stream and recordings updated immediately. Neither report establishes what is happening on your setup.
Check the source type and its loop settings
For one media file: test Media Source
OBS documents Media Source for supported individual media files. Its Loop property repeats the file when playback finishes. Supported audio formats listed by OBS include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; supported video formats include several common types. If your playlist contains one local file, use Media Source as a comparison point. If it plays in sync there but not through VLC Video, that is useful diagnostic evidence for your particular file and setup—not proof that VLC is generally defective.

For an ordered playlist: inspect VLC Video
VLC Video is the OBS source intended for playlists. Check the playlist order and the following properties:
- Loop Playlist: repeats the playlist when it has run out of media files. OBS documentation lists this as on by default.
- Shuffle Playlist: check whether it is enabled if playback order matters; the documented default is off.
- Visibility Behaviour: the documented default is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when visible. If the source is in a scene that becomes hidden, this behavior can affect playback continuity.
- Network caching: OBS documentation lists 400 ms as the default. Do not change it on the assumption that the default causes every audio delay; the documentation does not claim that.
- Audio track: the documented default is track 1. Confirm that the selected track contains the intended audio, especially if files have multiple tracks.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Match architectures: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. If the playlist includes network streams, note that separately from local files when comparing results.

What reported OBS cases do—and do not—show
In a 2024 OBS Studio issue report, a Windows 11 user running OBS 30.1.2 said VLC Video Source output was nearly three seconds behind the same source’s monitor output. The author also reported that the same local music file had no delay in standard Media Source. This is one user’s observation, not an independently reproduced measurement, a population statistic, or evidence of a universal VLC delay.
A macOS 13 user report for OBS 29.1.3 described local monitor controls lagging after playlist playback, while the author said the stream, mixer levels, and recordings updated immediately. That report illustrates why monitor behavior should be checked separately from the program output. An older Windows 10 report involving OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1 described mixed audio/video playlist transition and monitoring anomalies; its age and specific configuration make it historical evidence, not a current general diagnosis.

These are user-submitted reports. They do not establish how often the issue occurs, whether it reproduces in current versions, or which setting will fix a different computer. The reviewed material does not identify a Malayalam-language cause. Treat Malayalam speech, music, typography, and YouTube metadata separately from playback timing unless there is a specific language-related failure to investigate.
Separate connection trouble from audio synchronization
If OBS shows increasing dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator, check the connection and bitrate path to YouTube as a separate problem. OBS describes those signs as indicating an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. They do not, by themselves, prove an audio-sync cause. Do not try to solve an out-of-sync recording by changing connection settings unless the recording or connection evidence points there.
