Fix OBS YouTube Stream Dropouts on Shared Broadband in an Indian Apartment

OBS dropped frames usually point to an unstable or insufficient connection to YouTube. Measure upload during typical apartment use, reduce bitrate, then isolate Wi-Fi, router, software and ISP causes.

If OBS keeps dropping frames while you stream to YouTube from an Indian apartment, first check the upload your connection can sustain during normal household use. Lower the stream bitrate below that stable capacity, then test Ethernet and other local network factors. A high download-speed result—or buying a new router—does not by itself solve unstable outbound upload.

What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not

In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. If the counter keeps rising and the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS says the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS sends directly to YouTube; it does not operate an intermediary streaming server. OBS identifies network problems between the computer and the ingest server as the cause of network dropped frames, and says the software itself is extremely unlikely to be responsible.

Do not confuse this with viewer-side buffering. Viewers may see loading even when your OBS connection is stable, because their devices and internet connections differ. If OBS shows no dropped frames, investigate playback conditions separately rather than lowering your stream bitrate automatically. OBS’s buffering guide explains that distinction.

Measure upload when the apartment network is actually busy

Run an upload-speed test at a time that resembles your stream, with the apartment’s usual devices and users online. Repeat it if results vary. Focus on outbound upload, not download: YouTube notes that inbound speed is often higher and that a fast office connection can still leave an individual with limited capacity when many people share it. Its guidance is to make sure the outbound connection can carry the stream bitrate and leave 20% bandwidth headroom. YouTube streaming tips

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS’s dated connection guide (2024) gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate. YouTube’s 20% headroom and OBS’s 75% starting point are guides, not guarantees: shared-network capacity can change as residents use the connection. Begin conservatively and test under representative conditions, checking OBS’s counter and YouTube’s stream health before raising quality. OBS connection guide

Choose a YouTube bitrate your connection can hold

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are ingestion targets, not a promise that your apartment broadband can sustain them. If your stable upload cannot support a target with headroom, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and corresponding bitrate rather than forcing the higher setting.

H.264 stream setting YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings. YouTube publishes separate tables for AV1, H.265, and other resolutions and frame rates, so use the current table matching your encoder configuration. Its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Work through connection fixes one at a time

  1. Lower OBS’s bitrate. Set it below the upload capacity that remains stable during typical shared use, with headroom. Run a test stream and check whether the dropped-frames counter continues to rise. If it does, lower the bitrate or continue to the next checks.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If practical, connect the computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test under similar conditions. A cable improves the computer-to-router link; it cannot fix an oversubscribed broadband connection or an ISP-side route problem.
  3. Try another available YouTube ingest server. If OBS offers another server choice, test it and compare results. A change may help identify whether the selected server or route is involved; it is not a guaranteed fix.
  4. Check software and drivers. Look for a VPN, security software, network-optimization utility, or outdated network driver that may affect the connection. Do not leave security protection disabled. If a temporary diagnostic indicates it is interfering, use an appropriate OBS exception and re-enable protection.
  5. Inspect the network equipment and cabling. If drops persist, check the modem, router, Ethernet cable and other network devices. OBS lists equipment and the network path as possible causes.

On Windows, OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users have reported helpful. Treat them as diagnostics, not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce quality to react to connection problems, but OBS describes it as a fallback rather than a remedy for the underlying instability. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

When router QoS might help

If you administer the shared router and have confirmed that simultaneous household use is causing contention, its QoS or device-priority setting may give the streaming computer preference while the network is overloaded. Controls vary by router and firmware, and prioritization allocates existing bandwidth; it does not increase the connection’s total capacity. For example, TP-Link describes device prioritization on supported models. Check your router’s own documentation and permissions before changing shared settings; there is no basis here to recommend a particular router for Indian apartments.

If OBS still disconnects

Keep a short record of the time of each failure, the OBS dropped-frames counter, your chosen bitrate and stream settings, and upload-test results from busy and quieter periods. If local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP with the timing and results and ask about upload stability and the route to YouTube’s ingest service. OBS logs can also help diagnose the network path; its guide identifies hardware and ISP issues among possible causes. OBS connection guide
