A Sony DUALSHOCK 4 can connect to a Windows-based ROG Ally over Bluetooth or a compatible micro-USB data cable. For Bluetooth, turn the controller off, unplug USB, then hold Share + PS until the light bar flashes. On the Ally, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth and choose Wireless Controller. If Windows connects but a game still ignores it, troubleshoot game input separately—the Bluetooth link may already be working.
First, identify what “not connecting” means

These are different stages: Bluetooth discovery, Windows receiving controller input, and a game accepting that input. A fix for one stage will not necessarily fix the next.
Pair the DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth
- Make sure the controller is off (its player indicator should be off) and disconnect any USB cable.
- Hold Share and PS together until the light bar flashes. A rapidly flashing bar generally indicates pairing mode; a solid or inactive bar does not mean it is discoverable.
- On the Ally, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth, then select Wireless Controller when it appears.

If there is no light, charge the controller before troubleshooting Windows. Keep the controller close to the Ally while pairing. Third-party PS4-compatible pads may use different procedures, so these Sony-specific steps may not apply to every controller sold as a “PS4 controller.”

If “Wireless Controller” does not appear or will not reconnect
Windows can retain a pairing entry from a previous attempt or another connection. Remove the old record and pair afresh:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find Wireless Controller or an old DUALSHOCK entry, open its three-dot menu, and select Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on from Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode with Share + PS, then add it again.
If the controller has recently been used with a PS4, phone, tablet, or another PC, make sure it is not reconnecting to that device. Switching devices requires pairing again; Sony’s accessories guidance also notes the one-console-at-a-time pairing limitation: Sony accessories support.
Reset the controller if pairing remains stuck
- Turn the controller off and disconnect USB.
- Find the small reset hole on the back, near the L2 trigger.
- Use a paper clip or similar narrow tool to press and hold the button for about 3–5 seconds.
- Connect the controller to the Ally with a known-good USB data cable and press PS.
- If Windows detects it over USB, unplug it and try Bluetooth pairing again.
Sony describes the reset procedure and button location in its controller support guidance. Resetting does not repair a damaged port or depleted battery, but it can clear a controller state that prevents a fresh connection.

Try USB to separate controller trouble from Bluetooth trouble
Use a compatible micro-USB data cable and connect directly to the Ally where possible. A hub or dock is also an option if it provides a reliable data connection. A controller lighting up or charging is not proof that the cable carries data: charge-only cables are common, and a worn cable or loose micro-USB port can also prevent detection.
Check whether Windows reacts when you connect the controller, then test the buttons and sticks using the Windows controller panel described below. If charging works but there is no detection, try another known-good data cable and another USB port or computer before concluding that the controller is defective. USB is a useful diagnostic and avoids Bluetooth pairing variables; it does not guarantee that every game supports every controller feature.
Check the Ally’s Bluetooth connection
Before changing drivers, charge the controller, bring it close to the Ally, and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth accessories. If a USB 3.0 hub or device is near the Ally, move it away or disconnect it for a test; nearby USB 3.0 equipment can interfere with Bluetooth. Also check that a PS4 or another previously paired device is not taking the controller connection.

If Bluetooth is missing, unstable, or failing with other devices too:
- Turn Bluetooth off in Settings > Bluetooth & devices, restart the Ally, and turn Bluetooth back on.
- Use Windows 11’s Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It is especially useful when multiple Bluetooth devices fail, not just the controller.
- Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and check the adapter for warning icons. Check for driver updates through Windows Update or the appropriate ASUS support channel, then restart after installation.

If other Bluetooth accessories work normally and only the DUALSHOCK 4 fails, prioritize its battery, pairing record, reset, USB cable, and cross-device test before assuming the Ally’s Bluetooth adapter is at fault.

Windows detects the controller, but a game does not
Test whether Windows receives input before installing a mapper or changing Ally settings:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the connected controller, choose Properties, and test the buttons and sticks.
- It is absent from the Game Controllers panel: Return to the USB or Bluetooth connection steps; this is still a Windows-level detection problem.
- It appears and responds there, but not in a game: The connection works. Check the game’s controller settings, launcher configuration, and input support.
- It works in one game but not another: The controller and connection are likely functional; the difference is probably game-specific support or configuration.
Some PC games expect XInput, while the DUALSHOCK 4 commonly presents through a different input path. For a Steam game, try its controller settings and Steam Input. A non-Steam game may need its own controller configuration or, if necessary, a reputable controller-mapping utility that translates input. A mapper is not a Bluetooth fix, is not mandatory for every game, and can conflict with Steam Input or other virtual-controller software. Use only the project’s official distribution source if you choose one, and avoid running multiple remappers at once.

The Ally has its own controls, so a game may enumerate both those and the DUALSHOCK 4. That can make the external pad appear as Player 2, cause duplicated input, or make the game switch between controllers. Those symptoms do not mean Bluetooth failed.

For a game-specific test, review the controller or embedded-controller options in Armoury Crate SE. Menu names and available behavior can vary with the Ally model and software version; ASUS documents model and version qualifications in its ROG Ally FAQ. If you temporarily disable the built-in controller to test a game, remember that the Ally’s own controls may stop working until you re-enable them. Do not treat permanent disabling as a general pairing fix.
Some DUALSHOCK 4 features may not work on Windows
A connected controller does not guarantee PS4-console feature parity. Sony lists limitations for use with other compatible devices: touchpad support may be unavailable, light-bar color cannot be changed, and rumble, motion sensing, or headset audio through the controller may not work. These limitations can apply even when buttons and sticks work normally. See Sony’s compatibility notes. USB may offer a more predictable connection, but it still cannot make a game support features it does not implement.
When to suspect a hardware fault
Cross-test before replacing anything:
- Try another Bluetooth device with the Ally. If several fail, investigate Windows or the Ally’s Bluetooth driver.
- Try the DUALSHOCK 4 with another PC or phone. If it fails to pair there too, controller state or hardware is more likely.
- Try a second known-good USB data cable, then another port or computer.
- Try another controller with the Ally. If that also fails on Bluetooth and USB, focus on the Ally or Windows.
If the DUALSHOCK 4 fails over both Bluetooth and USB after a reset and these cross-tests, its battery, port, or other hardware may need service. A replacement cable or hub is only relevant if testing identifies that as the problem; a new controller is not required just to pair a functioning one.

- Charge the controller; turn it off and unplug USB.
- Hold Share + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Pair through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- Remove any old Wireless Controller entry and pair again.
- Reset near L2 for 3–5 seconds, then test with a known-good USB data cable.
- If Windows sees input but a game does not, test with
