A PS5 Media Remote can fail for different reasons depending on what it cannot control. Console navigation uses a wireless pairing with the PS5, while TV power, volume, mute, and input commands use infrared (IR). Start by identifying which side has failed, then work through batteries, pairing, a console restart and update, TV reconfiguration, and hardware checks. Do not factory-reset the PS5 as a first step.

Sony advertises dedicated Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, and YouTube buttons, but shortcut behavior can vary with country, installed apps, account configuration, and PS5 software. Test whether the failure affects only a shortcut or all controls (Sony’s product page).
1. Replace both AA batteries and inspect the contacts
- Press the PUSH button and remove the rear cover.
- Take out both batteries.
- Install two new AA batteries in the orientation marked inside the compartment.
- Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types.
- Check for corrosion, leakage, bent contacts, or a loose compartment, then test from a short distance.
Sony’s Media Remote manual says low battery power can cause improper operation and reduce operating distance. If a battery is leaking, stop using the remote, avoid bare-skin contact with residue, and do not charge, heat, open, or modify disposable batteries.

PS5 control is not an IR function. The remote must be paired with the console.

- Open Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote.
- Follow the automatic pairing instructions with the remote close to the console.
- If automatic setup fails, select Set Up Manually and complete the prompts.
- Test the directional buttons, PS button, playback controls, volume controls, and app shortcuts.
These are Sony’s current setup labels (support instructions). One Media Remote operates only one PS5 at a time, according to the manual. If you moved it to another console, pair it with the intended PS5 again.
3. Restart the PS5 and install available system software
- Turn the PS5 off completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Wait about 30 seconds, then start it with the DualSense or console power button.
- Test the remote.
- Check the PS5’s system-software settings for an available update.
- Run Media Remote setup again if the console still does not respond.
Sony recommends current PS5 software, but it does not document a dedicated Media Remote firmware update or promise that an update will cure every failure. Treat this as a compatibility and system-state check. Avoid Safe Mode and factory reset unless Sony support directs you: a full reset deletes user data. PS5 support explains recovery choices, while Restore Default Settings is a separate, non-destructive option.
4. Reconfigure TV control and restore IR line of sight
TV power, volume, mute, and input commands use infrared. They can fail even while PS5 navigation works normally.
- Open Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote on the PS5.
- Run the TV configuration for the television you currently use.
- Point the front of the remote directly at the TV’s IR receiver.
- Remove objects blocking either device and test power, volume, mute, and input.
- Repeat setup after changing televisions.
Sony specifies a compatible TV and unobstructed, direct pointing for IR operation. A soundbar, receiver, HDMI switch, or streaming device may not support every command. A TV-only failure does not prove the Media Remote is defective; use the TV’s original remote to confirm the television itself responds.

5. Clean, isolate, and escalate hardware failure
- Remove the batteries before cleaning.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth.
- Inspect for cracks, sticky or sunken buttons, liquid exposure, and battery leakage.
- Test every button after reinstalling fresh batteries.
- If it still will not pair after restart and manual setup, contact PlayStation hardware support for repair options.
Sony warns against solvents, liquid, and small particles entering the product. If another Media Remote pairs with your PS5 but this one does not, the original is probably faulty. If several remotes fail on the same PS5, investigate the console or software environment instead. Replace the remote only after ruling out a TV-only IR problem; the official replacement is listed at PlayStation Direct.
Still not working?
- Never pairs: after new batteries, restart, and manual setup, suspect the remote or PS5 accessory hardware.
- Pairs but TV does not respond: revisit TV compatibility, configuration, and IR line of sight.
- Only certain buttons fail: physical wear or contamination is more likely than pairing.
- Several remotes fail on one PS5: seek console/software support.
For temporary console control, use the DualSense or, where supported, PS Remote Play. Remote Play requires a supported device, account, network connection, and suitable PS5 settings, and it does not replace the Media Remote’s TV IR functions.

Why does my PS5 Media Remote control the TV but not the PS5?
The TV commands use IR, but PS5 navigation requires a console pairing. Open Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote and use Set Up Manually if automatic pairing fails.

Reconfigure the current TV, point the remote directly at its IR receiver, and remove obstructions. The television must be compatible.

Is there a reset button on the PS5 Media Remote?
Sony’s current support material does not document a dedicated factory-reset button sequence. Use fresh batteries, the official setup screen, a restart, and manual pairing instead.
Will changing batteries erase pairing?
No. Replacing the two AA batteries should not erase the PS5 pairing, although you may need to pair again if the connection was already lost.
Can one Media Remote work with two PS5 consoles?
Sony’s manual says one Media Remote operates only one PS5. Pair it again when moving it to a different console.

Line of sight is specifically important for infrared TV commands. PS5 console control uses the separate wireless pairing.

Should I reset my PS5?
Not as routine remote troubleshooting. A full PS5 reset deletes user data; try batteries, pairing, restart, update, and TV reconfiguration first.
When should I replace the remote?
Consider replacement or repair after fresh batteries, manual pairing, a console restart/update, and hardware inspection fail—or when buttons show liquid or impact damage.
