Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First identify where the error appears: an OBS recording-format error, an OBS streaming-start failure, and a YouTube Live Control Room format warning have different causes. For recording, check the recording format, encoder and audio tracks in OBS. For a stream YouTube flags, check the selected service and protocol, encoder, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s encoder guidance. HDR needs its own settings; do not apply them to a standard SDR stream.
Identify which format error you have
Note the exact message, where it appears and what you clicked immediately beforehand. Did you choose Start Recording or Start Streaming? Does OBS show the error, or does YouTube Live Control Room report an issue after OBS connects? Those details determine which settings to investigate.
- OBS fails when recording: follow the local recording checks below. YouTube’s ingest codec settings are not the first fix for a recording-only error.
- OBS fails to start streaming: check the active output encoder and streaming service or protocol.
- YouTube receives the stream but flags it: check YouTube’s stream status and compare the incoming settings with its encoder recommendations.
- You intended to stream HDR: use the separate HDR guidance below. HDR settings are not a general fix for SDR streams.
The available details here do not identify a particular OBS version, operating system, log message or device, so no single codec or bitrate can be prescribed for every case.
Fix an OBS local recording-format error
OBS’s recording error reads: “The output format is either unsupported or does not support more than one audio track. Please check your settings and try again.” It points to the recording output configuration, including the chosen format and whether it supports the selected audio-track combination.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output → Recording.
- Check the selected recording format, encoder and audio tracks. If you have selected multiple tracks, test with a format and encoder combination that supports them, or reduce the selected tracks if your recording workflow does not need them.
- If compatibility remains an issue, try MKV. OBS documents MKV as compatible with every audio and video encoder supported in OBS Studio. It is OBS’s default format, but some editing software may require you to remux an MKV recording before editing.
- Try recording again and confirm that the error is gone before changing streaming settings.
A recording container and a live-stream ingest configuration are separate things: changing your YouTube stream codec will not address an error that occurs only when recording.
Fix a YouTube live-stream format or ingest warning
If OBS starts sending video but YouTube flags the incoming stream, inspect the stream status beneath the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Then verify the settings OBS is sending rather than changing multiple options at once.

- In OBS, check which YouTube service or protocol is selected and which encoder is active for streaming.
- For YouTube Live, use RTMPS unless your intended workflow requires a different documented protocol. YouTube’s HDR-over-HLS instructions describe a specific exception; do not switch to HLS simply to troubleshoot a standard stream.
- Check resolution and frame rate in OBS. YouTube says: “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” Avoid forcing a different setting unless you have a reason to do so.
- Compare the stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. The bitrate depends on all three; one bitrate is not a universal format fix.
- Start the stream and inspect the status beneath the Live Control Room preview for any remaining warnings.
For context, YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 at 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. For AV1 or H.265 at 1080p and 60 fps, it recommends 12 Mbps. These are codec- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not guaranteed remedies for a protocol or format mismatch. Follow the current YouTube guidance for your actual output settings.
Use HDR settings only for an HDR stream
YouTube’s OBS instructions for HDR specify a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Your device must support the selected encoding format. YouTube also describes protocol and stream-key requirements for its HDR-over-HLS setup; use those instructions when that is the workflow you intend to run.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not switch an SDR stream to HDR settings as a generic compatibility test. If you did not deliberately configure HDR, first troubleshoot it as a standard stream and check the codec, protocol, resolution and frame rate.
Check encoder availability before considering hardware
OBS notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload. If OBS reports that an encoder is unavailable or cannot initialize, check whether your device supports that encoder and whether its drivers are current. If the encoder is available and the problem is a YouTube format or protocol warning, a new GPU or capture card is not an established general fix; resolve the configuration mismatch first.

Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears only after clicking Start Recording | OBS recording format, encoder or audio-track combination | Open Settings → Output → Recording; test a compatible configuration such as MKV. |
| OBS reports a streaming-start failure | Selected streaming encoder or service/protocol | Check the active encoder and YouTube service settings in OBS. |
| YouTube shows a warning after OBS connects | Incoming codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate or protocol | Read Live Control Room stream status and compare the actual output with YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| HDR output is intended but YouTube does not accept it | HDR encoder, profile, color format, color space, or HDR protocol/key setup | Verify hardware HEVC, Main 10, P010 and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, then follow YouTube’s HDR-over-HLS instructions if applicable. |
| OBS says a hardware encoder is unavailable | Device compatibility or driver | Confirm encoder support and current drivers before changing hardware. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than troubleshoot a live camera or game capture from OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on.
