If VALORANT feels laggy on your PS5, first work out whether you have high ping, packet loss, low frame rate, or display/controller delay. Then check Riot and PlayStation Network status, restart your network, and compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection. Those checks are more useful than changing DNS or buying a “gaming” router: neither can reliably fix packet loss or a poor route to a game server.
This guide is for VALORANT’s PS5 version. The PS5 game requires an internet connection; console crossplay is with Xbox Series X|S, not PC. PlayStation’s game listing has platform details.
First, identify what kind of lag you have
“Lag” can describe several problems, and the right fix depends on which one you’re seeing:
- Consistently high ping: Your console takes a relatively long time to exchange data with the match server. Actions can feel delayed. Server distance, ISP routing, or network congestion can contribute; download speed by itself does not tell you the cause.
- Ping spikes or jitter: Latency jumps up and down. The match may feel fine, then suddenly become unresponsive. Wi-Fi interference and network traffic are useful things to rule out first.
- Packet loss: Some game data fails to arrive. You may see rubber-banding, players teleporting, or movement and shots behaving inconsistently.
- Disconnects: These suggest a sustained interruption or service problem, rather than simply a high but steady ping.
- Low frame rate or stutter: The image skips or stutters even if the network is steady. That points toward rendering or frame-time performance, not necessarily your internet connection.
- Display or controller delay: The image or your input feels late while network indicators remain stable. TV processing, display settings, or controller connection can make gameplay feel like it is lagging online.
Riot’s network and game-instability guide distinguishes high ping, packet-loss/network problems, and low client FPS. Use the in-game indicators below to see which symptoms match yours before changing settings.

Check Riot and PSN status
Before troubleshooting your home network, check Riot service status and PlayStation Network status. Look for VALORANT, login, matchmaking, or broader network incidents. If other players are reporting the same problem, or PSN or Riot has an active incident, a local DNS change or router purchase is unlikely to help; wait for the service issue to clear and test again.
Also note whether the trouble affects every online game or only VALORANT, and whether it happens during login, matchmaking, party features, or matches. That comparison helps separate a service or game-specific problem from a home-connection issue. Status pages change, so check them when the problem occurs rather than relying on an old outage report.
Turn on VALORANT’s network indicators
In VALORANT, look under Settings > General > Other for Instability Indicators. The labels or menu placement may vary by console build. Enable the available incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs, network RTT or ping statistics, and FPS or client-performance statistics. Riot describes these indicators in its official guide.

If the graph rises when the match gets choppy, investigate the connection path.
- High average ping: This can reflect server distance, routing, or congestion. There is no single universal “good ping” threshold for every player and route.
- Low client FPS: Investigate game performance rather than changing DNS or router ports.
- Stable network readings but delayed-feeling gameplay: Check display and controller latency as well.
Pay attention to what the indicators do during the problem, not only to one reading before a match. A stable speed test to PlayStation’s network is not the same as a measurement of the route to a VALORANT match server.
Restart the game, PS5, and network equipment
- Close VALORANT completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Shut down the PS5 fully.
- Turn off the modem and router. If they are separate devices, power off both.
- Wait at least five minutes, then turn on the modem and let it reconnect.
- Turn on the router and wait for it to finish connecting; then start the PS5.
- Open VALORANT and test in a non-ranked mode before returning to a competitive match.
PlayStation’s connection troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the console, trying a wired connection, and power-cycling the modem/router for at least five minutes. Restarting can clear temporary equipment or connection state, but it will not repair persistent Wi-Fi interference, a faulty cable, an overloaded network, or an ISP fault.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
A wired test is the clearest way to find out whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem:
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the PS5 directly to your main router, if possible. For this test, avoid a powerline adapter or an extra wireless mesh hop.
- On the PS5, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and select the wired connection. See PlayStation’s setup instructions if the menu differs.
- Test VALORANT again, ideally in the same mode and at a similar time of day. Compare ping stability and packet-loss indicators, not just download speed.
If Ethernet improves the match, investigate weak signal, interference, distance, busy 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, or mesh-node roaming. A 5-GHz signal may offer more capacity nearby but generally has less range and wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. A damaged cable or router port can also make a wired test unreliable.

Continue with traffic, router, ISP, service, or game-specific checks rather than assuming that a faster wireless connection will solve it.
Pause competing network traffic
For a short test, pause PS5 downloads and updates, stop video streams on other devices, and pause large uploads, cloud backups, or file transfers. Ask other household users to avoid heavy network activity while you check a match. Uploads in particular can create latency spikes on some connections; a plan can have high download speeds and still feel unstable when the network is busy.
If stopping other traffic helps, the issue may be congestion or latency under load (sometimes called bufferbloat). A router with effective queue management or traffic prioritization may help some households, but it cannot fix every network problem. First confirm that busy traffic is actually associated with the spikes; buying hardware without that evidence may not help.

Run the PS5 connection test and check NAT
Use the PS5’s network test and note whether the internet connection succeeds, the NAT type shown, and the reported download and upload speeds. Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet if you can. These speed results are useful context, but they do not measure the precise route or in-match latency to a VALORANT server.

- NAT Type 2 is a common result for a console behind a home router and is generally suitable for online play.
- NAT Type 3 is more restricted and can contribute to connection, matchmaking, or party-feature difficulties. It does not, by itself, prove the cause of high match ping.
- NAT Type 1 is an open-style connection and is uncommon in an ordinary home-router setup; it is not a target you need to pursue just to fix lag.
If your setup has an ISP gateway and a second router that both perform routing/NAT, you may have double NAT. PlayStation warns about multiple NAT routers in its network troubleshooting guidance. Where supported, ask your ISP how to put its gateway in bridge mode, or configure the second router as an access point so only one device routes traffic. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or does not allow bridging, ask its support team what options are available.
Do not put the PS5 in a router DMZ as a default lag fix. It is not a routine answer to high ping or packet loss; follow your router maker’s or ISP’s specific advice before changing firewall settings.
Update VALORANT, the PS5, and router firmware
- VALORANT: Check for a game update from the PS5 game tile or library and install it before testing again.
- PS5 system software: Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for an update.
- Router firmware: Check the router manufacturer’s official instructions for your model. Menu names and update procedures vary; do not install firmware for a different model.
Riot patches can include console-specific changes or known issues. Check the current VALORANT patch notes rather than assuming a new update caused—or has already fixed—the problem. A patch can be relevant, but it does not establish that every lag report is a game bug.
Change DNS only for connection or sign-in trouble
DNS helps the console find services by name. Trying another DNS provider may be a reasonable diagnostic if the PS5 has trouble connecting, signing in, or resolving services. It generally does not lower latency once you are already connected to a match, and it will not repair packet loss, weak Wi-Fi, or poor routing. PlayStation lists DNS changes as a temporary option for certain connection errors in its connection guidance.

If you test DNS, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the active connection, and open its advanced settings. Leave IP address and DHCP settings automatic unless you have a specific reason to change them. Use the current DNS values from a reputable provider’s official documentation, then retest and return DNS to automatic if there is no improvement. There is no one provider that is fastest for every ISP and region.
Port forwarding and VPNs are not first-line lag fixes
Port forwarding is mainly relevant when connection establishment, NAT restrictions, party features, or access to services are failing. It is not a guaranteed remedy for ordinary high ping or packet loss. PlayStation lists these ports for certain PS5 connection errors: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535 in its connection guidance and server connection guidance. That is PlayStation troubleshooting advice, not a verified VALORANT-specific port list or a promise that forwarding them will reduce ping. Follow your router maker’s or ISP’s instructions, and avoid broad or unnecessary forwarding.
A VPN is also not a default gaming fix. It may change a route in a way that helps one particular connection, but it can add distance, latency, packet loss, or NAT complications. If you choose to test one, compare it with the same match region and conditions and keep it only if the in-game results consistently improve.

If the packet-loss and ping readings stay steady while the game still feels late or choppy, check the parts of the setup that affect the picture and input:
- Enable your TV’s Game Mode or low-latency mode. Turn off motion smoothing and other image processing you do not need while playing.
- Check that the HDMI cable and port are secure; try another HDMI port or display if one is available.
- Update the display firmware if the manufacturer provides an update for your model.
- Compare gameplay in the firing range with an online match. If the delay appears only online, the network remains a stronger suspect; if it is present offline too, check display, game performance, or controller behavior.
- Test the DualSense over USB. Its device software can be checked under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
A TV’s processing delay can feel like internet lag, but it will not cause VALORANT’s packet-loss indicator to rise. PlayStation’s PS5 support guide includes console, display, and controller help.

Use the symptom to choose your next test

Riot explains that network lag can be affected by geographic location and routing in its networking discussion. A local setting cannot overcome the physical distance to a server. A phone hotspot is useful for a short comparison, but cellular networks can have variable latency, strict NAT, or data limits and are not necessarily a better permanent connection.
Reinstall only after the connection tests
Reinstalling VALORANT may help if an update failed or game files are damaged, but it cannot fix a Riot outage, Wi-Fi interference, ISP packet loss, or server routing. Try it only after restarting, checking status and updates, testing Ethernet, and—if practical—comparing another network.
PS5 Safe Mode offers options such as clearing the system-software cache and rebuilding the database. PlayStation describes these for broader system or storage-related problems, not as primary fixes for online lag. Do not reset the PS5 or reinstall system software for ordinary VALORANT latency; those steps can affect user data and belong to a broader console repair process.

When to contact your ISP or Riot
Contact your ISP if packet loss or major spikes persist on a direct Ethernet connection after other household traffic is paused. Share the times it occurs, whether other games are affected, the PS5 connection-test results, and whether a different network behaved differently. Ask the ISP to investigate line quality, local congestion, router/modem faults, NAT, and routing—not only to sell a higher download-speed tier.
Contact Riot Support if the issue appears limited to VALORANT, especially if it continues across Ethernet and a second network or coincides with a specific patch or server. Include your region, approximate match times, server selection if available, the relevant in-game indicators, and the tests you have already performed. A short, controlled comparison is more useful than changing several router settings at once.
