“Encoder disconnected” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the exact YouTube Live Control Room error and its timestamp first, then compare it with your encoder log. Verify the stream URL and RTMPS support, the VPS’s outbound network path and firewall rules, and finally the media settings. Avoid opening inbound ports or changing several settings at once unless the evidence points there.
What “encoder disconnected” tells you—and what it doesn’t
YouTube displays stream errors beside the health indicator in Live Control Room and timestamps them. Critical errors can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; moderate errors may reduce stream quality. The wording and time of the error help distinguish a connection or ingestion problem from a media-configuration issue, but the phrase alone cannot identify the cause on a particular VPS. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance explains the categories.
Capture evidence before restarting
- Record the exact YouTube health message and its timestamp.
- Note whether the preview receives data, and when it stops or starts.
- Check whether the encoder process is still running and record the corresponding log entries.
- Keep the stream URL’s protocol and port, but redact the stream key from notes, screenshots, and support requests.
Restarting may restore the feed, but it can erase useful context. Preserve the evidence first so you can correlate YouTube’s timestamp with the encoder and VPS events.
Verify the YouTube destination and RTMPS settings
Copy the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder rather than relying on an old saved address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP, and its setup guidance requires both a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the stream.

Use the error to choose the check
- SSL error: Confirm that the URL uses
rtmpsand that it is the correct server address. If it still fails, YouTube advises trying port 443 in the URL or encoder port setting. - Connection timeout: Verify the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
- Incorrect stream format: Check the encoder’s video and audio formats against YouTube’s requirements and the displayed error. YouTube’s error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for this error category.
Use YouTube’s RTMPS encryption setup instructions for the URL and port checks. Do not expose the stream key when sharing logs or asking for help.
Check Contabo VPS status and the route to YouTube
- Confirm the VPS is running. Check its state in the Contabo Customer Panel and look for a relevant incident on Contabo’s status page.
- Separate a local access problem from a VPS problem. If possible, try reaching the VPS from another network or device. If ordinary access fails, Contabo recommends VNC as an alternative. When VNC works but other connection methods fail, its guidance points to firewall configuration, incorrect ports, or network misconfiguration.
- Inspect outbound rules on the VPS. An encoder running on the VPS sends its connection outward to YouTube. Check the operating-system firewall’s outbound policy and allow the actual destination protocol and port selected in YouTube and the encoder.
- Measure before blaming capacity. If the URL is correct and the VPS is reachable but the feed still drops, record egress performance, packet loss, and connection timing. These measurements help distinguish a network interruption from an encoder or configuration fault.
Contabo’s network firewall is not the OS firewall
Contabo’s network-level firewall and the VPS operating-system firewall are separate controls. Contabo says its network firewall, when assigned to a VPS or VDS, blocks inbound traffic by default and does not restrict outbound traffic; an operating-system firewall can control both directions. Because this stream originates on the VPS, opening inbound RTMP port 1935 is not a general fix for an outbound encoder connection. Confirm the actual protocol and destination port before changing rules. See Contabo’s firewall guidance.

Contabo publishes VPS/VDS port-speed ranges from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. That is a product range, not a measurement of your individual server’s sustained throughput or its route to YouTube. Do not treat it as proof that a particular stream has enough available bandwidth. Contabo’s port-speed article describes the range.
Match the encoder’s media settings to YouTube’s guidance
Once the connection path is reachable, check format and bitrate for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Consult the YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the recommendation matching your exact codec and output mode.

Examples: H.264 bitrate recommendations
| Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not evidence that your Contabo VPS has that much spare outbound capacity. Use the table for other resolutions and codecs rather than applying these H.264 examples to every stream.
YouTube recommends testing before the event with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health while live. If an error explicitly identifies an incorrect format or video setting, change the relevant setting and test again rather than changing every encoder option at once.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| YouTube reports an SSL error | Check that the copied URL is the correct RTMPS address; if the error remains, try port 443 in the URL or encoder setting. |
| The encoder times out connecting | Recheck the URL and verify the encoder supports RTMPS. |
| The encoder stays running, but YouTube says disconnected | Compare YouTube’s error timestamp with encoder logs; inspect outbound OS firewall policy and measured connectivity from the VPS. |
| VNC works but normal VPS access does not | Check firewall configuration, ports, and network settings; consult Contabo if provider-side availability appears implicated. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | Check the video/audio format and the encoder settings named by the error; compare with YouTube’s current guidance for the output mode. |
| The stream connects but drops under motion or at a selected output mode | Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s table; measure actual egress and packet loss instead of inferring capacity from the advertised port-speed range. |
What to send when escalating
If these checks do not resolve the interruption, give the relevant support team enough detail to investigate without revealing credentials. Include the YouTube error text and timestamp, encoder logs, operating-system and encoder versions, URL protocol and port, relevant firewall rules, and VPS status evidence. Redact the stream key. Contact Contabo when the VPS or provider network appears involved; consult the encoder’s documentation or support when RTMPS support or encoder logs point to the software.
